Undated: Voter suppression in the United States concerns allegations about various efforts, legal and illegal, used to prevent eligible voters from exercising their right to vote. Where found, such voter suppression efforts vary by state, local government, precinct, and election.

January 4: Just one day after he disbanded his controversial commission investigating allegations of voter fraud, President Trump called for new voter identification laws – and again claimed many people are casting ballots illegally.

"As Americans, you need identification, sometimes in a very strong and accurate form, for almost everything you do.....except when it comes to the most important thing, VOTING for the people that run your country," Trump tweeted. "Push hard for Voter Identification!"

But national voting rights and civil rights activists said the commission and Trump's call for new laws is just a pretext to suppress voter participation particularly among the poor, the elderly and people of color.

July 17: Voter Suppression Is Warping Democracy

A new survey from The Atlantic and the Public Religion Research Institute shows that black and Hispanic citizens are more likely than whites to face barriers at the polls—and to fear the future erosion of their basic political rights.

September 11: Trump administration's voter suppression attempts ahead of midterms are not only 'morally wrong,' they're illegal

Imagine going to the polls on Election Day and discovering that your ballot could be collected and reviewed by the sitting president of the United States. That's essentially what Donald Trump is trying to do to voters in North Carolina ...

At the end of August, just two months before voters head to the polls in the midterm elections, Trump's Justice Department issued sweeping subpoenas demanding millions of records about individual North Carolina voters.

After facing a fierce backlash over the fact that the request would impede the ability of election officials to do their jobs and conduct free and fair elections this November, the U.S. Attorney's office decided to postpone the deadline for their request to January.

But the fact remains: such a request, whether it happens in the run-up to an election, or shortly after one takes place, only serves to discourage Americans from exercising their constitutional rights, especially people of color.

November 5: Trump is upset about voter suppression? He should be mad at Republicans.

In a tweet on Monday morning, the president wrote, “So funny to see the CNN Fake Suppression Polls and false rhetoric. Watch for real results Tuesday. We are lucky CNN’s ratings are so low. Don’t fall for the Suppression Game. Go out & VOTE.”

Nothing about this tweet makes sense or can be explained, so I am not going to bother. But if Trump wants to get angry about voter suppression ahead of the midterm elections, there are plenty of things to be upset about.

This might be a little awkward for Trump, though — because efforts to suppress voters are coming from his fellow Republicans, who appear to be trying to stop minority voters, who lean Democrat, from casting their ballots.

Here are some examples:

November 20: Democrat Stacey Abrams isn't backing down from her fight against what she calls voter suppression tactics and election mismanagement after losing the Georgia governor's race. In fact, Abrams said she experienced the problems in her state firsthand — after nearly being denied a ballot during early voting.

In an interview with Morning Edition host Steve Inskeep, the Democratic gubernatorial nominee said that when she went to vote last month, a poll worker initially told her that she had requested an absentee ballot and couldn't cast an in-person vote. Abrams replied that she never filed for an absentee ballot, and after a conversation with the site's manager, the matter was quickly resolved.

November 27: Senate to Vote on Trump Judicial Nominee Who Defended Voter Suppression

Thomas Farr defended law that targeted black voters with “almost surgical precision”

November 28: Senate narrowly votes to advance controversial judicial nominee Thomas Farr

November 29: The controversial judicial nomination of Thomas Farr has been derailed in the Senate.

South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott — the lone African-American Republican in the Senate — sealed Farr's fate by saying on Thursday that he opposed the nomination. His opposition, along with Arizona GOP Sen. Jeff Flake and all Senate Democrats, means there is not enough support for the nomination to go forward.

December 17: Russia’s Voter Suppression Operation Echoed Trump Campaign Tactics
