June 22: Insult, provoke, repeat: how Donald
Trump became America's Hugo Chávez ... Despite ideological differences
there are eerie similarities between the late socialist strongman and the
Manhattan billionaire – and warnings to heed
He was a one-man media hurricane dominating the news with insults and
provocations, promises and policy pronouncements. He would tweet at all hours,
phone TV chat shows, stage rollicking rallies.
He hired and fired people live on air. Humiliated and taunted foes and bragged
about winning. He could be funny and coarse and buffoonish and broke all the
rules about presidential conduct.
Over time, it became clear there was genius to it. He sucked up all the oxygen,
leaving allies as well as rivals gasping for air. Even if you were sick of him
you paid attention.
This may sound familiar as
Donald Trump marches towards the Republican presidential nomination. But
actually it describes Venezuela from 1999 to 2013 under the reign of
Hugo Chávez.

January 27:
April 19: There are many good uses towards
which Venezuela’s government could put $500,000.
Importing food for its starving citizens and replenishing
medical supplies at threadbare hospitals come to mind. Instead, Venezuela
chose to donate that amount to the organizers of US president Donald Trump’s
inauguration celebrations, according to a
new report (pdf) from the US Federal Election Commission.
Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro didn’t personally sign the check. The money
was given by Citgo Petroleum, an American subsidiary of Venezuela’s state oil
company, Petróleos de Venezuela (PdVSA). But for all intents and purposes, PdVSA
is an arm of the government.

Why did Trump accept Venezuela's money? - The Boston Globe
There is a certain irony in recent news that Venezuela donated a half
million dollars to Donald Trump's presidential inauguration through
Petróleos de Venezuela, the state-owned oil company.

May 19: Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro
delivered his most scathing critique of U.S. President Donald Trump yet Friday,
telling him to stop intervening and “get your pig hands out of here.”
Speaking before a crowd of supporters, a fired-up Maduro accused Trump of
promoting an interventionist policy that infringes on his socialist government’s
sovereignty.
The remarks come a day after the Trump administration slapped sanctions against
eight members of Venezuela’s Supreme Court, accusing them of damaging the
nation’s democracy. A ruling by the court in late March stripping the
opposition-controlled assembly of its remaining powers ignited a deadly wave of
unrest.

July 18: In a statement released Monday
night, President Trump threatened to impose economic sanctions on Venezuela
should the nation’s president, Nicolas Maduro, follow through on his pledge to
create a “constituent assembly” capable of rewriting Venezuela’s constitution.
The warning comes a day after more than 7 million Venezuelans participated in a
symbolic referendum vote to reject Maduro’s plan, which many see as a ploy
for the president to retain control of Venezuela following the end of his term
in 2019. On Sunday, an estimated 98 percent of the nation’s opposition
supporters voted against the proposed assembly.

August 4:
Why Does the Trump Administration Suddenly Care So Much About Venezuela?
... Under orders from Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, the State Department is
reportedly drafting a new mission statement for itself. According to Josh Rogin
of
the Washington Post, the drafts are nearly identical to
the current mission statement, except that they remove any mention of building a
“democratic world” as a U.S. foreign policy goal.
For anyone who’s been following the Trump administration’s foreign policy, the
sudden concern for democracy and the rule of law [in Venezuela] is a little
jarring, and the inconsistency has been widely noted.

November 13: Trump Doubles Down on Sanctions
and Regime Change for Venezuela
... Venezuelans were against the sanctions by a margin of 61.4 to 28.5 percent;
and among the unaligned voters, more than 70 percent were opposed. Also, 69
percent wanted the opposition and government to reinitiate talks. The regime
change strategy had failed.
But the Trump administration decided to double down on both regime change and
sanctions. The strategy appears to be to prevent an economic recovery and to
worsen the shortages (which include essential medicines and food) so that
Venezuelans will get back in the streets and overthrow the government.

Donald Trump’s Year of Living Dangerously
... It’s worse than you think.
A former senior U.S. official with whom I spoke was briefed by ministers from
three of the four countries that attended the dinner [on the sidelines of the

about the entire engagement,” the former official told me. Even if few took his
martial bluster about Venezuela seriously, Trump struck them as uninformed about
their issues and dangerously unpredictable, asking them to expend political
capital on behalf of a U.S. that no longer seemed a reliable partner. “The word

Pressure on Venezuela
Under former US President Barack Obama, the United States began implementing
individual sanctions on
several Venezuelan government officials to pressure President Nicolás Maduro
to respect civil and political rights. These individual sanctions blocked

US jurisdiction and did not target the Venezuelan economy or its people.
Under Trump, US economic sanctions have grown harsher, but have not turned to
banning exports or imports. Importantly, the
offhand comments Trump made in August regarding potential military action in

support for Venezuela opposition leader grows
The Trump administration is facing a critical test of its hemispheric policy as
global support grows for the leader of Venezuela's National Assembly, Juan

The administration has taken an active role in opposing Maduro, declaring the

Guaidó has strong legal grounds to claim the presidency that Maduro holds.
