Undated: Drain the swamp is a phrase which since the 1980s has frequently been used by American politicians. The phrase alludes to the historical draining of swamps to keep mosquito populations low to combat malaria.[1]

August 12: Trump hasn’t drained the swamp – he’s put the military in charge of it

In comparison with the President and his associates, the generals do indeed appear to be the ‘adults in the room’

Dwight Eisenhower was right to warn Americans in 1961 of the ‘military industrial complex’, but perhaps it is now the only thing that stands between the US and chaos.

October 11: “The president has been clear that Nafta has been a disaster for many Americans, and achieving his objectives requires substantial change,” said Emily Davis, a spokeswoman for the trade representative. “These changes of course will be opposed by entrenched Washington lobbyists and trade associations. We have always understood that draining the swamp would be controversial in Washington.”

October 29: Can Donald Trump really drain ‘the swamp’ or is he out of his depth?

In his old stomping grounds, Donald Trump knew only one rule: the law of the jungle, kill or be killed. But now mired in Washington, DC, new adversaries are muddying the waters. As the president clings to the top job, can he really drain 'the swamp' or is he out of his depth?

November 20: ... it's not breaking new ground at this point to suggest Donald Trump's base has cultish tendencies. But it's still amazing sometimes to hear the extent to which Trump's supporters will stick with the president no matter what. This morning on CNN's New Day, for example, one Trump-supporting panelist offered that if Jesus Christ told him Trump colluded with Russia, he'd still defer to the president on whether or not it was true. This would suggest he trusts the Word of Trump over the Word of God.

January 9: President Donald Trump unexpectedly suggested on Tuesday that bringing back congressional “earmarks,” spending habits that were banished six years ago from the federal budget process, might help an often deadlocked U.S. Congress get things done.

Known by their supporters as the “grease” that made Washington’s wheels turn, earmarks were funds allocated for lawmakers’ pet projects that helped secure votes needed to get broader legislation passed.

January 30: Donald Trump Is Not the Only President Who Promised to ‘Drain the Swamp’

Ever since Thomas Jefferson undid John Adams' ruinous Alien and Sedition Acts, many chief executives have tried to clean up gov't

Founded as the city of the federal government by an act of Congress in 1790, Washington, D.C., has had more than two centuries to work out the kinks and the bruises. In 1791, engineer Peter Charles L’Enfant noted that what would become Capitol Hill would be compared to “none other.” It “would be made so grand and all other would appear but of secondary nature.”

It is a shame, then, that this Hill that he saw “so advantageously” as the seat of the federal government has been blemished so badly through faux intellectualism, incompetence, corruption, bureaucrats, and the forever waste, fraud and abuse of government-spending.

April 10: Trump promised to drain the swamp. His supporters got politics as usual.

In more than two dozen interviews with Trump supporters in 13 states stretching from Florida to California, McClatchy found the Trump base seething over a White House that has sidelined people who worked to get this unconventional candidate elected in favor of establishment Republicans and veteran operatives — the wealthy and elitist “swamp-dwelling” insiders this president swore to rid from government.

July 16: Trump and Senators Offer Plans to Reorganize Bureaucracy, Drain the Swamp

Decades of ceaseless expansion of the size and scope of the federal government have created a bloated and inefficient federal bureaucracy, replete with agencies and offices with overlapping functions.

The Rube Goldberg-esque structure of the federal bureaucracy is not only expensive, it thickens the web of government red tape, makes government services less efficient, and makes mission failure more likely by splintering simple jobs among diffuse agencies.

October 30: A Donald Trump appointee — also a Saudi government lobbyist — is reassessing his roles

One of President Donald Trump’s administration appointees — who simultaneously represents Saudi Arabia’s government as a registered foreign agent — is reevaluating his various roles.

Richard F. Hohlt, a longtime lobbyist who has served on the President’s Commission on White House Fellowships since Trump appointed him to the post in June 2017, said in emails with the Center for Public Integrity that his upcoming 71st birthday has caused him to reconsider who he represents.

October 31: Trump’s “drain the swamp” pledge has drowned.

President Donald Trump’s campaign vow to rid Washington of corruption and special interests has been a sad joke for a long time. Since taking office, he has hired more than 100 lobbyists to the federal agencies that oversee these lobbyists’ former employers. His former aides are now becoming lobbyists, too, cashing in on their connections to the White House. And lately it seems like every federal agency is facing scrutiny over dubious spending by top administration officials.

May 26:
The President of the United States is erratic, illiterate, and doesn’t want to know what he doesn’t know. The President has alienated former allies, befriended or courted murderous dictators, and has repeatedly brought the country to the brink of nuclear confrontation. The President lies constantly, knows that he is lying, and demands that Administration officials lie for him, and often they do. The President has waged war on the institutions of government, overseeing the gutting of the State Department and the destruction of other federal agencies by their own leaders, and effectively shut off media access to the Pentagon, the State Department, and the White House. The President has acted to thwart oversight of the Administration by other branches of government. The President has never made a secret of despising the government itself: he has called it a “swamp” and gleefully shut it down for thirty-five days, during a temper tantrum. The President has not only failed to divest himself of his businesses but has installed his children in and near the White House, openly using his office for personal financial gain. The President has debased political culture and language, using his bully pulpit to spew lies, hate, and personal insults
