Susan Elizabeth Rice (born November 17, 1964) is a U.S. public servant who served as the 24th United States National Security Advisor from 2013 to 2017. She was formerly a U.S. diplomat, Brookings Institution fellow, and U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. She served on the staff of the National Security Council and as Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs during President Bill Clinton's second term. She was confirmed as UN ambassador by the U.S. Senate by unanimous consent on January 22, 2009.

Mentioned as a possible replacement for retiring Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2012,[1][2] Rice withdrew from consideration following controversy related to the 2012 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, saying that if she were nominated, "the confirmation process would be lengthy, disruptive, and costly."[3] She succeeded Tom Donilon as National Security Advisor on July 1, 2013.

April 5: The White House charges that it was Susan Rice who may have abused her power as President Barack Obama's national security adviser and effectively snooped on Trump's presidential transition. It was Rice who may have leaked classified details from that surveillance to the press, it alleges. And in doing so, Trump mused on Wednesday, she might have committed a crime.

May 2: Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) is reportedly calling on former national security adviser Susan Rice to testify before a Senate subcommittee next week regarding whether the Obama administration tried to "politicize intel" during the 2016 presidential election.

May 4: President Donald Trump criticized former national security adviser Susan Rice on Thursday morning, writing on Twitter that it was “not good” that Rice refused an invitation from Sen. Lindsey Graham to testify before a Senate subcommittee.

Rice, who served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and then as national security adviser for former President Barack Obama, officially turned down Graham’s invitation to testify regarding Russia’s interference in last year’s election before the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee Crime and Terrorism.

Rice, already a controversial figure for her incorrect explanation of the terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, has also been accused of requesting the names of individuals associated with Trump’s campaign and transition team that were referenced in intelligence reports. Rice has denied that she or anyone else in the Obama administration used intelligence information for political purposes.

Rice, who declined Graham’s request for testimony via a letter from her lawyer, said she turned down the invitation because it came only from the South Carolina Republican and was not bipartisan in nature.

June 4: In the wake of another terror attack in London, former Obama administration national security adviser Susan Rice has said that President Trump's proposed travel ban would likely not protect the U.S. from such threats

"There is really no evidence to suggest that by banning Muslims, or banning Muslims from a particular set of six countries, that we would make ourselves here in the United States safer. And that's I believe, one of the major reasons why the courts thus far have been very skeptical of the travel ban."

September 18: Rice told House investigators why she unmasked senior Trump officials

... her explanation appears to have satisfied some influential Republicans on the committee, undercutting both Nunes and Trump and raising new questions about whether any Trump associates tried to arrange back-channel discussions with the Russians.

May 31:  Former national security adviser Susan Rice's son is an outspoken Trump supporter and serves as the president of Stanford University's College Republicans.

John David Rice-Cameron told Fox News this week that he distanced himself from his parents' political views and is now a conservative who is determined to " Make Stanford Great Again."

Despite their opposite political beliefs, Rice-Cameron told the outlet that he has a close relationship with his mother.

“My mother and I have a great relationship, and my mother believes strongly in the free and respectful exchange of ideas,” Rice-Cameron told Fox News. “We disagree on most of the standard Republican-Democrat disagreements. However, we agree that America is the greatest nation the world has ever seen, and thus, we believe that America has an important role to play as a force for liberty and justice on the world stage.”

June 13: North Korea's Nuclear Threat Is Real And Present, Rice Says

... it's a rather preposterous claim for the president to tweet that there's no longer a nuclear threat from North Korea. Worse still, I think it's quite concerning because it suggests one of two things, either that he views this summit as all show and for political purposes rather than to address the substantive problem of North Korea's nuclear capacity and missile capacity, or that he really doesn't understand at all how grave and how pernicious the North Korean nuclear threat really is and therefore is not in a position to lead and guide a very serious long-term negotiation to eradicate it.

August 15: Criticized For Racism, Trump Goes After Black Former National Security Adviser

Susan Rice’s name is included on a list of officials who have criticized Trump, even though she has kept a relatively low profile.

As President Donald Trump’s White House struggled with accusations of racism over his attacks on African-American former aide Omarosa Manigault Newman, on Wednesday he announced security clearance reviews of a number of vocal critics ― and Susan Rice, who is also African-American.

Rice ...  was included on a list of names Trump is reviewing to see whether they will continue to have the ability to receive classified information. High-ranking intelligence, military and diplomatic officials are generally permitted to hold onto their security clearances after they leave their jobs so that they can be brought in to offer their expertise later.
