February 12: Trump budget would privatize US space station operations

The administration wants to focus on exploring deep space — sending people back to the moon and perhaps beyond. The budget proposal calls for $10 billion to "support human space exploration and to pursue a campaign that would establish U.S. preeminence to, around, and on the Moon."

March 13: Star Wars? President Trump Proposes Military Space Force

President Trump says Tuesday he wants a military space force that would be the orbital equivalent of the Army, Air Force and Navy.

March 14: Spending a year in space not only changes your outlook, it transforms your genes.

Preliminary results from NASA's Twins Study reveal that 7% of astronaut Scott Kelly's genes did not return to normal after his return to Earth two years ago.

The study looks at what happened to Kelly before, during and after he spent one year aboard the International Space Station through an extensive comparison with his identical twin, Mark, who remained on Earth.

August 7: Satellites make much of modern warfare possible, through GPS systems, wireless communications and sophisticated weather forecasting. This makes satellites tempting military targets. The U.S. Air Force is now responsible for defending American satellites and spacecraft and wants to continue to do so. But President Donald Trump says the perils require a new military branch, which has come to be known as the Space Force. Critics say this would just add bureaucracy and costs. Supporters say a new military branch is needed to prioritize U.S. defenses for the next battlefront.

August 13: It's 2018, so of course Twitter is taking yet another one of President Donald Trump's plans and transforming it into a hilarious trove of memes. This time, people are poking fun at the president's proposal to create a Space Force, and the memes about Donald Trump's Space Force are pure perfection. What a time to be alive.

Trump first made the call for a Space Force — a proposed sixth branch of the U.S. military — back on March 13, during a visit to the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego. Trump told an audience of Marines in a speech that he believes U.S. forces will eventually be fighting wars with other countries in outer space (to much backlash)

September 17: Trump’s Space Force struggling to launch

A bipartisan group that includes generals and lawmakers fears that carving the new branch out of the Air Force would siphon resources from other programs and weaken the military.

September 19:
Trump's Space Force proposal is a 'bold idea,' but the US already dominates outer space, Air Force secretary says

"The Air Force has a lot of authorities now to continue to accelerate defendable space so that we dominate and win," Wilson said. "We're the best in the world at space. Our adversaries know it, and they're developing the capabilities to deny us the use of space in crisis or war and we are determined that that not be allowed to happen."

October 20: Trump space force plan is grounded in real needs, but hazy

Some may think it would assemble a razzle-dazzle new army for the heavens that would deploy soldiers in space or arm astronauts with galactic superweapons. Analysts say the reality is that building space muscle is more about reordering the way the Pentagon already uses space than about combat.

October 23: The National Space Council on Tuesday served up six recommendations to President Donald Trump to enable the creation of a Space Force, moving the birth of a sixth military branch one step closer to fruition.

Vice President Mike Pence, who chairs the council, said he anticipated that President Donald Trump will likely take action on at least some of the recommendations very soon.

October 27: Trump's Space Force is moving forward. Here's what you need to know

The Trump administration sees space as a war-fighting domain, and it wants the US to be ready.

The US military has been actively involved in space activities for decades. In the 1960s, at the same time that NASA was working toward a moon landing, the Air Force even had a parallel manned space program with its own astronauts, although none of them ever launched, as far as we know.

Today, a significant portion of US military activities tied to space resides in the Air Force Space Command, headquartered in Colorado, with over 30,000 people worldwide and launch facilities in Florida and California. The command handles missions that include satellite communications, missile warning systems, global positioning systems, surveillance of space, and other projects like the secretive X-37B space plane

December 3: Nearly two months after a rocket malfunction forced NASA and the Russian space agency Roscosmos to abort the launch of a Soyuz mission, a new crew blasted off on Monday for the International Space Station.

Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko, American astronaut Anne McClain and Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques successfully launched at 6:31 a.m. ET from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan and went into orbit a short time later.

May 24: Elon Musk Says It's 'So Far, So Good' for SpaceX's 1st 60 Starlink Satellites

SpaceX's internet-satellite megaconstellation appears to be off to a good start in low-Earth orbit.

The first 60 members of the company's Starlink network launched last night atop a Falcon 9 rocket. The satellites deployed smoothly about an hour after liftoff, and they came online shortly thereafter, SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk announced via Twitter last night.

Musk gave us another update this afternoon  tweeting "So far, so good" in response to a follower's question about Starlink's status.

"Krypton thrusters operative, satellites initiating orbit raise every 90 mins," he added in another tweet a bit later. (The satellites deployed at an altitude of 273 miles, or 440 kilometers, and are making their own way to their operational altitude of 342 miles, or 550 km).
