It is generally illegal to touch someone who doesn't want to be touched. Battery
is a tort – a violation of civil law for which the victim can sue – that entails
a "harmful or offensive contact with the person of another." It doesn't require
a physical injury, just an offensive touching. As
one court explained, "the slightest unlawful touching of the person of
another is sufficient, for the law cannot draw the line between different
degrees of violence and therefore totally prohibits the first and lowest stage,
since every individual's person is sacred and no other has the right to touch
it." Criminal laws also prohibit a range of unconsented touchings, which have
different names such as "battery," "assault" and "rape."

Donald Trump, an American businessman
and current
President of the United States, has been accused of
sexual assault and
sexual harassment by at least fifteen women since the 1980s, and also been
publicly accused of non-consensual kissing or
groping by
at least twelve more women, which he has denied.

Ongoing updates: For now, Trump seems
entirely unfazed by the allegations hanging over him. Press Secretary Sarah
Sanders has
said that it is the White House’s official position that every single one of
the women is lying, and Trump has not shied away from condemning other men
accused of sexual misconduct (if
they’re Democrats).
Here’s a reminder of what behavior the president has been accused of, organized
by when the alleged incident occurred. It includes, when available, an update on
how the women have continued trying to make their stories heard.

July 28:
Donald Trump distanced himself Tuesday
from comments one of his top advisers made in an explosive interview while
defending the Republican presidential candidate from a decades-old rape
accusation.
Michael Cohen, special counsel to Trump and an executive vice president at The
Trump Organization, apologized Tuesday after telling
the Daily Beast that legally "you cannot rape your spouse."
The rape claim stems from an accusation Trump's then-wife Ivana Trump leveled at
her husband during divorce proceedings in the early 1990s, an allegation she
walked back Tuesday.

June 29: In covering a story, a media outlet
is not finding guilt. It is simply reporting the news that a lawsuit has been
filed against Mr. Trump, and ideally putting the complaint in context. Unproven
allegations are just that - unproven, and should be identified that way. (Mr.
Trump’s lawyer says the charges are “categorically untrue, completely fabricated
and politically motivated.”) Proof comes later, at trial. But the November
election will come well before any trial. And while Mr. Trump is presumed
innocent, we are permitted — no, we are obligated — to analyze the
case’s viability now.

November 9: A woman says that Senate
candidate Roy Moore (R-AL) started a sexual encounter with her when she was 14
and he was 32, the Washington Post
reported Thursday.
Leigh Corfman says that in 1979, Moore started a conversation with her at an
Alabama courthouse when she accompanied her mother to a child custody hearing.
She was 14 years old at the time. Then a 32-year-old assistant district
attorney, Moore offered to watch Corfman while her mother went into a courtroom
and asked for her phone number, she says. A few days later, Corfman says he
picked her up at her home and drove her to his house, where he touched her over
her bra and panties and guided her hand to touch him over his underwear.

“Not generally, no,” Moore said. “If I did, I’m not going to dispute anything,
but I don’t remember anything like that.”
Trump could not have watched the segment live, as he was shown arriving at a
forum in Vietnam. But when he does get around to viewing the program, he will
surely recognize that Moore has become a distraction [to the Republican party].

November 17: In a normal Republican
administration,
an allegation that Senator Al Franken, a Democrat, had
groped a woman as she slept, accompanied by a damning photo, would be a
political gift to the White House. When its occupant is
Donald Trump, however, the story is altogether different—late in
his presidential campaign, Trump was faced with accusations of sexual misconduct
and assault from more than 16 women, which many believed would spell his
political doom.

hip or side. It was definitely on my butt," she said.

While the White House has said that President Donald Trump

April 13:
On April 13, 2018,
The Wall Street Journal reported that [Elliott] Broidy had a sexual
relationship with
Playboy Playmate
Shera Bechard, resulting in a pregnancy in late 2017.[39][40]
The model later had an abortion. Donald Trump’s personal lawyer
Michael Cohen negotiated for Broidy to pay $1.6 million for the woman's
silence. The settlement was falsely characterized at the time as a personal
injury settlement.[41][42]
In response to the Journal article, Broidy issued a statement
acknowledging that he had had a "consensual relationship with a Playboy
Playmate", that Cohen had contacted him after being approached by the woman's
attorney,
Keith M. Davidson, and that Broidy had then hired Cohen to work out a
non-disclosure agreement.[43]
Broidy resigned his post at the RNC the same day the article appeared.[44]
A few days later Cohen confirmed in court that Broidy was one of the three
clients he had given legal advice to in the previous year.[45]
Some columnists have since speculated that
Donald
Trump was really the person who had the affair with Bechard.[46][47][48]
Broidy's lawyer, Chris Clark, stated that Broidy will withhold forthcoming
payments to Bechard due to an alleged breach of the non-disclosure agreement on
her part.[49]
On July 6, 2018, Bechard filed a lawsuit against Broidy and the attorney
Michael Avenatti, in relation to the cessation of the settlement payments.[50][51][52]
Bechard has alleged in a complaint that Broidy was physically, sexually, and
emotionally abusive of her, and that he exposed her to
herpes.[53][54]
Broidy has denied the allegations.[54]
On September 7, 2018, California Superior Court Judge Elizabeth White granted
Broidy’s request to strike allegations from the case going forward that were not
relevant to the breach-of-contract dispute.[55]

September 25: In the days before
Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) won a five-way Democratic primary for
attorney general in Minnesota in August, he was accused of abuse by a former
girlfriend — an accusation he continues to
vehemently deny.
On August 11, the son of Ellison’s ex-girlfriend Karen Monahan
wrote a
lengthy Facebook post saying that he saw a video of Ellison grabbing his
mother and swearing at her in a bedroom. Last week, Monahan
released patient progress notes taken by a doctor that mentioned she had
reported she was in a physically and emotionally abusive relationship — and
identified her abusive partner as Ellison.
The document does indeed show that Monahan said she was in an abusive
relationship, but the doctor notes that “she did not have any physical injuries
that required a physical examination in the past.”

familiar rhetoric.
“Judge Brett Kavanaugh is a fine man, with an impeccable reputation, who is
under assault by radical left wing politicians who don’t want to know the
answers, they just want to destroy and delay. Facts don’t matter.” the president
tweeted Friday.
This is rich coming from a guy who has made
more than 5,000 false or misleading claims since he took office.

September 26: The Senate Judiciary Committee
is reviewing a statement from a third woman who has come forward with sexual
misconduct allegations against Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh.
The allegations, from a woman identified as Julie Swetnick, were made public by
attorney Michael Avenatti on Wednesday morning.
Avenatti posted Swetnick's three-page sworn declaration on Twitter.

September 26: Attorney Michael Avenatti, on
the eve of Brett Kavanaugh's high-profile hearing to address sexual misconduct
allegations, identified and released a "sworn declaration" from a woman who
claims the Supreme Court nominee was involved in "gang" rapes in the early
1980s.
Avenatti’s client was identified as Julie Swetnick, who further claims in the
statement that Kavanaugh and a friend were "present" when she became a "victim
of one of these 'gang' or 'train' rapes" in 1982.

September 28: Senate Judiciary Committee
Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, set a committee vote on Kavanaugh for Friday
afternoon, while Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., planned a full
floor vote for early next week.
Kavanaugh is poised to at least make it out of committee, with the
late-breaking support of GOP Sen. Jeff Flake -- after the panel heard dramatic
testimony from the nominee and Christine Blasey Ford, who accuses him of
sexually assaulting her in 1982.

October 2: Trump mocks Kavanaugh accuser
Christine Blasey Ford at campaign rally
After saying last week that her Senate testimony was "very credible," the
president on Tuesday night repeatedly ridiculed the woman who says she was
attacked.

October 2: The audience laughed as Trump ran
through a list of what he described as holes in Christine Blasey Ford's
testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee. She testified that Kavanaugh
pinned her on a bed, tried to take off her clothes and covered her mouth in the
early 1980s, when the two were teenagers. Kavanaugh has denied Ford's
allegations.
"How did you get home? 'I don't remember,'" Trump said at the rally in
Southaven. "How did you get there? 'I don't remember.' Where is the place? 'I
don't remember.' How many years ago was it? 'I don't know. I don't know. I don't
know.'"
Imitating Ford, he added, "But I had one beer — that's the only thing I
remember."

October 4: A GOP leader in North Carolina
this week shared a fake photo this week mocking Christine Blasey Ford, the first
woman to accuse Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting
her, for her looks.
Lanny Lancaster, the Carrabus County GOP chairman, shared a photo of a young
woman wearing braces and glasses with the comment, “This is the alleged sexual
assault victim. Wow.”
The photo, which is not of Ford, has been circulating the internet for years,
the News & Observer reported.

October 23: A woman flying from Houston to
Albuquerque on Sunday had just settled into her seat and fallen asleep when she
was awoken by an unwanted touch — a hand from behind her grabbing the right side
of her breast. And the man authorities say is responsible allegedly cited U.S.
President
Donald Trump’s past lewd language about women.
Federal prosecutors allege the hand belonged to 49-year-old Bruce Michael
Alexander from Tampa, Florida, another passenger on the Southwest Airlines
flight, who reportedly told authorities after being arrested Sunday that “the
President of the United States says it’s ok to grab women by their private
parts,” according to a criminal complaint.

October 30: The Atlantic
is reporting that the FBI is looking into a matter sent to them by
the office of special counsel Robert Mueller about an anonymous woman who is
alleging she was offered $20,000 to make a false allegation of sexual harassment
against Mueller. The woman had initially spoken to at least ten reporters from a
variety of news outlets, who were unable to verify her account. In a letter to a
reporter, she claimed, a man “offered to pay off all of my credit card
debt, plus bring me a check for $20,000 if I would do.” She added, “He knew
exactly how much credit card debt I had, right down to the dollar, which sort of
freaked me out.”
The woman named GOP operative John Burkman, who also hosts a talk radio
show and frequently promotes conspiracy theories, as being part of the
operation.

November 3: Trump challenges Democrats after
Kavanaugh accuser admits to making false rape accusation
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley
referred Judy Munro-Leighton to authorities after his office said she
alleged that Kavanaugh and a friend raped her in the backseat of a car -- only
for that story to fall apart.

November 3: Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck
Grassley, the Iowa Republican who presided over Kavanaugh's contentious
confirmation hearings, requested
in a letter to the Justice Department and the FBI on Friday that the
agencies investigate Judy Munro-Leighton for making false statements to
committee investigators and obstructing committee investigations.
Grassley has also referred for investigation another Kavanaugh accuser, Julie
Swetnick, as well as her attorney, Michael Avenatti — best known for
representing adult film actress Stormy Daniels in her suit against President
Donald Trump.
Avenatti fired back at Trump in a tweet Saturday, writing: ".@realDonaldTrump -
my client Ms. Swetnick and I are still waiting on the supposed 'criminal
investigation' that Chuck 'I Never Went to Law School' Grassley demanded. I have
only heard from the FBI once - to tell me I was a target of your MAGA bomber.
You are a complete fraud."

campaign-trail issue in the run-up to the midterm elections.

November 16: Education Secretary Betsy DeVos
announced sweeping rules on how colleges handle cases of sexual assault and
harassment that she says will fix a "failed" and "shameful" system that has been
unfair to accused students. In what the administration is calling a "historic
process," the proposed rules aim to significantly enhance legal protections for
the accused and reflect a sentiment expressed by President Trump that men are
unfairly being presumed guilty. More than a year in the making, the rules
replace Obama-era policies on how to implement Title IX, the law barring gender
discrimination in schools that get federal funding.

them.

December 2: Neil DeGrasse Tyson Rejects
Claims Of Sexual Misconduct
Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson has responded to recent allegations of sexual
misconduct by posting a
lengthy statement online, in which he denies wrongdoing and says he welcomes
an impartial investigation by the producers of his show Cosmos.
"In any claim, evidence matters. Evidence always matters. But what happens
when it's just one person's word against another's, and the stories don't agree?
That's when people tend to pass judgment on who is more credible than whom,"
wrote Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium in New York City.
Three woman have
come forward with accounts of experiences with Tyson that disturbed them,
according to the website Patheos.

December 12: Donald J. Trump
unleashed this morning the following official statement:
On Twitter: Despite thousands of hours
wasted and many millions of dollars spent, the Democrats have been unable to
show any collusion with Russia - so now they are moving on to the false
accusations and fabricated stories of women who I don’t know and/or have never
met. FAKE NEWS!

Trump’s tweet–which is, remember, an official White House statement–could expose
the president to a series of legal slam dunks from the multiple women who have
accused him of sexual assault, groping, forced kissing, harassment, attempted
rape and rape.
Specifically, here’s the part that could get him in trouble: “[S]o now they are
moving on to the false accusations and fabricated stories of women who I don’t
know and/or have never met.”
A cursory read of this statement shows the president is lying like a middle
school virgin who insists he’s had sex with celebrities.
Why? Because Trump has verifiable relationships with at least 17 of
his 20-plus accusers.

December 13: President Trump insists that he
didn't violate campaign finance laws and that any legal liability for hush money
paid to two women who claimed to have had affairs with him rests with his former
personal attorney and fixer, Michael Cohen.

interview with
Fox News. "Whatever he did, he did on his own."

April 30: The Massachusetts Gaming
Commission
said Tuesday that it would impose a $35 million fine on Wynn Resorts (WYNN)
and Wynn MA, LLC. The move comes after the commission completed its
investigation into sexual assault allegations levied against the company's
founder and former CEO — Steve Wynn — and how the company handled those claims.
Wynn, 77,
stepped down in 2018 as the head of the global gambling business after
an investigation by The Wall Street Journal reported numerous allegations
against him, citing dozens of sources.
The billionaire casino mogul denied the accusations of misconduct but said the
"avalanche of negative publicity" made it impossible for him to continue as CEO
and chairman of the company.
The commission is also fining Wynn CEO Matthew Maddox $500,000, citing his
"clear failure to require an investigation about a specific spa employee
complaint brought to his attention," among the reasons in the decision.
