The right to protest is a human right arising out of a number of recognized human rights. While no human rights instrument or national constitution grants the absolute right to protest, such a right to protest may be a manifestation of the right to freedom of assembly, the right to freedom of association, and the right to freedom of speech.[1]Additionally, protest and restrictions on protest have lasted as long as governments have.[2]

December 1: On Oct. 31, 1989, roughly 100 protesters from the AIDS activist group ACT UP New York descended on Trump Tower at 5th Avenue and 56th Street. One protester, dressed as Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, waved a sign demanding, “Surrender Donald.” ACT UP was in a fight for the lives of people with HIV and AIDS, striking out against government indifference and corporate greed. And they saw Trump for what he was: a monster in the making.

January 21: Hundreds of thousands of women protest against Trump

Wearing pink, pointy-eared "pussyhats" to mock the new president, hundreds of thousands of women massed in the nation's capital and cities around the globe Saturday to send Donald Trump an emphatic message that they won't let his agenda go unchallenged over the next four years.

January 26:
Perhaps the Largest Protest in U.S. History Was Brought to You by Trump

There is no precedent in U.S. history for the show of collective outrage that answered Trump's Inauguration. But then, there is no precedent for Trump, either: impetuous, thin-skinned and, for his trouble, entering office facing a grassroots opposition that heated up faster than a cup of ramen.

The face of that Democratic opposition--some call it the resistance--is female, which is to say it's a face that as a private citizen Trump liked to judge on a scale of 1 to 10, and as a candidate measured by worthiness of his sexual attention. The billionaire made the 2016 presidential campaign about women even before Hillary Clinton won the Democratic nomination, sliming the Republican primary field by insulting the looks of its only female candidate ("Look at that face!") and then moving on to Ted Cruz's wife. So it was that the Women's March--marches, really, as demonstrations were logged in more than 600 U.S. locations--became the occasion for recovering, in the space of just a few hours, spirits that since election night had spiraled into deep troughs of despair, dread and worse.

February 2: On the dark and cloudy morning in Brooklyn after Donald Trump’s Election Night upset, 20 members of the nonprofit Make the Road New York gathered in the conference room of their office for an all-hands emergency meeting.

The Latino and working-class organizing group, which specializes in immigrant rights, had not fully prepared for its nightmare scenario of Trump winning the presidency. Few people in the room believed the Republican candidate had more than a slim chance of victory.

The mood was extremely emotional. Some were visibly distraught, some were furious, some even cried.

But as the day went on, the small huddle of organizers got back to work to chart a course forward—to prepare for what Daniel Altschuler, their director of civic engagement and research, would later describe as a “defining fight of our lives.”

April 1: A federal judge in Louisville said in a ruling that then-candidate Donald Trump incited the use of violence against three protesters when he told supporters at a campaign rally a year ago to "get 'em out of here."

U. S. District Judge David J. Hale of the Western District of Kentucky also wrote in an opinion and order released Friday that because violence had broken out at a prior Trump rally and that known hate group members were in the Louisville crowd, Trump's ordering the removal of an African-American woman was "particularly reckless."

Hale pointed out that, as the protesters had alleged, the violence began as soon as Trump gave a command and an order to get the protesters out of the rally.

November 4:  Dozens of protesters took to the streets of downtown Los Angeles on Saturday, nearly one year after the election of Donald Trump as president spurred massive demonstrations across the U.S.

Perry Hoberman, an associate research professor at USC, is among the event's organizers. He said the date of the march was chosen in part to coincide with the anniversary of Trump's Nov. 8, 2016, election victory in the hope that it would energize others to stand up to what he sees as the administration's racist and divisive policies.

January 21: Women's March protests: Thousands rally against Trump

On the anniversary of Donald Trump's inauguration, organisers hope to encourage women to get more involved in politics.

Thousands have taken part in women's marches across the US on the one-year anniversary of Donald Trump's inauguration, in a bid to generate more female candidates running for office as well as to protest against the US president's policies.

Under the name Power to the Polls, the rallies on Saturday were hailed as the beginning of a new era in female political activism, with organisers hoping to encourage more women to get involved in politics at the local and national level. More marches worldwide are planned for Sunday.

"What you're seeing one year into the Trump presidency is a growing sense that women don't have a seat at the table," Al Jazeera's Rosiland Jordan, reporting from a march in Washington, DC, said.

"The goal for many of these protesters today is to get women, particularly women of colour, involved in politics. That does not mean just register to vote, but also be active in politics, so running for school board or even US Congress.

July 13: Huge protests in London as Donald Trump visits U.K., meets Queen Elizabeth II

Hordes of demonstrators converged in central London on Friday, intent on mocking U.S. President Donald Trump on his only full day of business with British leaders on what was dubbed a "working visit" to the United Kingdom. The visual cornerstone of the anti-Trump protests -- which included several organized marches by varying groups -- was a giant balloon depicting the U.S. leader as an angry, screaming orange baby in a diaper, clutching a cellphone with Twitter on the screen.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who has clashed for months on Twitter with Mr. Trump, had to give the final approval for "Trump baby" to fly. Mr. Trump has acknowledged that he feels unwelcome in the British capital, suggesting it was part of the reason he didn't spend much time there during his U.K. visit.

Leo Murray, who calls himself "Trump baby's" daddy, told Phillips that the 20-foot-high protest balloon design was chosen deliberately because Mr. Trump, "is uniquely vulnerable to personal insults, so we just got right down at his level, to speak to him in a language that he understands."

July 14: Two Arrested at Pro-Trump London Protests  ... British police have arrested a man and a woman at a right-wing protest in London, where people supporting a prominent right-wing activist were joined by a "Welcome Trump" rally.

The small rally supporting U.S. President Donald Trump — who's in Scotland after visiting London — joined the "Free Tommy Robinson" protest Saturday in London's Whitehall. Robinson —whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon — founded an anti-Muslim group and was jailed for contempt of court after broadcasting outside a criminal trial in May.

Scotland Yard had imposed restrictions on both rallies "due to concerns of serious public disorder and disruption." It said a June rally by the "Free Tommy" group resulted in serious violence in London and led to nine arrests.

November 3: President Donald Trump could learn a thing or two from former President Barack Obama about how to handle hecklers.

Trump has infamously encouraged supporters to “knock the crap” out of people who protest him at rallies. Obama showed how it should be done Friday, however, when he was heckled while stumping for Democratic candidates Bill Nelson and Andrew Gillum in Miami, Florida, ahead of Tuesday’s midterms.

“Sir, sir, don’t curse in front of kids, come on. Don’t do that in front of them, come on,” Obama calmly told one heckler.

January 10: Federal workers protest government shutdown in D.C.

We're days away from a record-length government shutdown.

On the 20th day of the federal shutdown, federal workers and their allies gathered outside of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) office in Washington, D.C. and marched to the White House.

About 250 people gathered on Thursday to protest the shutdown of the government. Nearly 800,000 federal workers have been furloughed or forced to work without pay during the shutdown, which will be the longest in history if it continues past Friday.

January 19: Third Women's March faces winter weather, a shutdown and anti-Semitism charges

"It’s such a movement, and it’s so empowering to be around so many people who are celebrating women and fighting for change," one of the marchers said.

Attendees this year appeared less in number than Women's Marches in the past, potentially a result of allegations of anti-Semitism made against the organizers. Nonetheless, those who show up for the march expressed excitement for the event.

The Women’s March organizers said it would be difficult to estimate the turnout overall this year, but said “there are almost 300 marches happening nationwide.”

Attendance overall may have been hampered as several high-profile organizations and individuals have pulled their support because of allegations that Women's March leaders Tamika Mallory and Carmen Perez stated that Jews needed to confront their role in racism and and that they "bore a special collective responsibility as exploiters of black and brown people," according to Tablet.

Mallory and Perez have said since that they condemn anti-Semitism and attempted to distance themselves from Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, who has made numerous anti-Semitic and homophobic statements. Mallory attended an event hosted by Farrakhan.
