Undated: Protectionism is the economic policy of restricting imports from other countries through methods such as tariffs on imported goods, import quotas, and a variety of other government regulations. Proponents claim that protectionist policies shield the producers, businesses, and workers of the import-competing sector in the country from foreign competitors. However, they also reduce trade and adversely affect consumers in general (by raising the cost of imported goods), and harm the producers and workers in export sectors, both in the country implementing protectionist policies, and in the countries protected against.

There is a consensus among economists that protectionism has a negative effect on economic growth and economic welfare,[1][2][3][4] while free trade, deregulation, and the reduction of trade barriers has a significantly positive effect on economic growth.[2][5][6][7][8][9] Some scholars have implicated protectionism as the cause of some economic crises, most notably the Great Depression.[10] However, trade liberalization can sometimes result in large and unequally distributed losses and gains, and can, in the short run, cause significant economic dislocation of workers in import-competing sectors.[11]

Undated: Protectionism in the United States is protectionist economic policy that erected tariff and other barriers to trade with other nations. This policy was most prevalent in the 19th century. It attempted to restrain imports to protect Northern industries. It was opposed by Southern states that wanted free trade to expand cotton and other agricultural exports. Protectionist measures included tariffs and quotas on imported goods, along with subsidies and other means, to ensure fair competition between imported goods and local goods. In today's age the US is still highly protectionist, according to Global Trade Alert the US has adopted over 1000 protectionist measures since the Global Economic Crisis in 2008, more than any other country since.[1][2]

June 2: Why Trump’s protectionism is futile

... Mr. Trump “comes from the casino industry, the real-estate industry, where you either get the project or not; you either win against the house or you lose against the house.” He fails to see that in international trade, imbalances “aren’t an indication that one country is beating another, or that one is ‘winning’ and the other’s ‘losing.’ ” Mr. Trump’s rhetoric and vocabulary are “not the way economists think about trade at all.”

July 10: Trump’s Protectionist Threat to Latin America

The economic impacts of Donald Trump’s trade dispute with China have so far been limited, but the countries of Latin America are nonetheless paying an early price. For a region where many economies are already constrained by weakened fiscal positions, the additional uncertainty caused by rising protectionism is especially unwelcome.

March 12: French Labor Minister Muriel Penicaud on Tuesday accused the Trump administration of pursuing protectionist policies that could be sign of possible conflicts on the horizon.

“I understand the point short-term but for the long term … We don’t think that protectionism is a policy,” Penicaud told the Washington Examiner. “Protectionism goes very quickly with nationalism, and that can go with conflict too.”

She spoke just as the Trump administration and European Union leaders are making preparations to begin talks later this year for a new trade deal.
