Tidbits ...
What is "news":
--a report of recent events
--previously unknown information
--something having a specified influence or effect

--material reported in a newspaper or news periodical or on a newscast
--matter that is newsworthy

Hard news vs. Soft news:
News stories are basically divided into two types: hard news and soft news. Hard new generally refers to up-to-the-minute news and events that are reported immediately, while soft news is background information or human-interest stories.

Politics, war, economics and crime used to be considered hard news, while arts, entertainment and lifestyles were considered soft news.

But increasingly, the lines are beginning to blur. Is a story about the private life of a politician “politics” or “entertainment”? Is an article about the importance of investing early for retirement a “business” story or a “lifestyle” story? Judging solely on subject matter, it can be difficult to tell.

One difference between hard and soft news is the tone of presentation. A hard news story takes a factual approach: What happened? Who was involved? Where and when did it happen? Why?

A soft news story tries instead to entertain or advise the reader. You may have come across newspaper or TV stories that promise “news you can use.” Examples might be tips on how to stretch properly before exercising, or what to look for when buying a new computer.

Opinion news:
An opinion piece is an article [or "newscast"], published in a newspaper or magazine, [or via other media such as television or the internet] that mainly reflects the author's opinion about the subject. [Opinion pieces may reflect real news, fake news, or opinion news ... it is up to the individual to decide what is truth and what is not].

How to decipher real news and weed out opinions and/or fake news:
“ … real news” media outlets and journalists sometimes make mistakes. And when we do, we issue corrections and take responsibility for those mistakes. Fake news [outlets] make no such efforts toward accuracy and often invent entirely fictional stories, which is what puts them in a different category. Further, some fake news [outlets]—particularly government-controlled media outlets [think Russia, North Korea, etc]—mostly publish factual news but mix in some fake stories for propaganda purposes.

"Real" news outlets in the United States (and some other countries) research their news stories, make corrections when they've made mistakes, and are also charged with reporting on government issues of all kinds (to help prevent people like Hitler from infiltrating our government and/or doing too much damage).

Opinion news and fake news presenters tend to rely on their own judgment about truths and may report them as fake, or about falsehoods and report them as true;  opinion commentators often present conspiracy theories as fact, push scare tactics, etc.

Children in some grade schools are now being taught how to recognize these issues; hopefully they will teach those parents who don't know the difference. In the meantime, if you're not sure, you can google terms like "how to recognize fake news" and find many sites dedicated to that particular educational activity.

June 29: In covering a story, a media outlet is not finding guilt. It is simply reporting the news that [for example] a lawsuit has been filed against Mr. Trump, and ideally putting the complaint in context. Unproven allegations are just that - unproven, and should be identified that way. ...  Proof comes later, at trial. But the November election will come well before any trial. And while Mr. Trump is presumed innocent, we are permitted — no, we are obligated — to analyze [a] case’s viability ....

June 26: Three CNN employees resign over retracted story on Russia ties

"On June 22, 2017, CNN.com published a story connecting Anthony Scaramucci with investigations into the Russian Direct Investment Fund.

That story did not meet CNN's editorial standards and has been retracted. Links to the story have been disabled. CNN apologizes to Mr. Scaramucci."

CNN announced on Monday afternoon that three network officials are leaving their jobs over the incident: Frank, the reporter on the story; Eric Lichtblau, a recent CNN addition from the New York Times who edited the piece; and Lex Haris, the executive editor of “CNN Investigates.” The moves follow an investigation carried out by CNN executives over the weekend, with the conclusion that longstanding network procedures for publishing stories weren’t properly followed. “There was a significant breakdown in process,” says a CNN source. “There were editorial checks and balances within the organization that weren’t met.”

The official CNN statement: “In the aftermath of the retraction of a story published on CNN.com, CNN has accepted the resignations of the employees involved in the story’s publication.”

May 24: Jake Tapper Shreds Donald Trump With A Long List Of His Conspiracy Theories

“I could go on, but this is just an hour show.”

On Wednesday’s broadcast of “The Lead,” Tapper dissected Trump’s latest unsubstantiated “SPYGATE” claim that the FBI conducted surveillance on his 2016 election campaign for “political purposes.”

As “we await the investigation into the matter,” said Tapper, it’s “worth remembering that while we’re sticking to the facts and telling you just what we know, President Trump apparently has no constraints since he simply makes stuff up.”

“He frequently lies and has a long and well-documented career engaging in conspiracy theories about all manner of subjects with no concrete evidence ever provided,” Tapper added.

June 5: Jake Tapper Brutally Fact Checks Trump’s Lies About The Philadelphia Eagles

,,, the president said in a Twitter post the White House would no longer honor the team since Eagles players kneeling during the National Anthem was disrespectful to the country.

“In point of fact, not once during the regular or post-season did any members of the Philadelphia Eagles kneel during the National Anthem,” Tapper said. “Not once!”

Trump also tweeted that “Staying in the Locker Room for the playing of our National Anthem is as disrespectful to our country as kneeling. Sorry!” Again, Tapper set him straight.

“Yeah, that was the Pittsburgh Steelers who stayed in the locker room during the anthem, Mr. President. Not the Philadelphia Eagles,” Tapper said, referring to one of the early games in the 2017 season.

“Again, the suggestion that it was the Eagles that did that ― false, deceptive, a lie,” he said.

June 11: State Department Spokeswoman Bashes CNN For Missing Event Closed To The Press

On Monday, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert, a former Fox News anchor and correspondent, posted a tweet that singled out CNN for ignoring a feel-good news story about her boss.

Time magazine correspondent Phil Elliot pointed out a slight problem with Nauert’s tweet ― journalists weren’t allowed at the event.

June 26: CNN’s Jim Acosta Berated, Told To ‘Go Home’ At Trump Rally

“We are here to do our jobs and report the news and report on this rally, and we’re not going anywhere,” the journalist said after the encounter.

Acosta was reportedly waiting in the press area at the rally in West Columbia, where the president was about to campaign for the state’s Republican Gov. Henry McMaster. But before Trump arrived, attendees holding signs reading “CNN fake news” began chanting for the reporter to leave the venue. At one point, a woman pointed at the journalist, repeating “Take him out” and urging her fellow rally-goers to heckle him.

July 13: Fox News’ John Roberts Defends CNN After Trump Refuses Question from ‘Fake News’

“Let’s go to a real network.” ... That’s what President Donald Trump said during a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Theresa May on Friday after refusing to take a question from his perpetual target, CNN’s Jim Acosta. Instead, he called on John Roberts from Fox News.

“CNN is fake news,” Trump said ,,, “I don’t take questions from CNN.” ... Roberts went on to defend NBC News correspondents Kristen Welker, who Trump called “dishonest” during the same press conference for asking about his contentious relationship with NATO allies. “She is honest as the day is long,” Robert said of Welker. “For the President to call her dishonest is unfair.”

“I also used to work at CNN,” he added. “There are some fine journalists who work there and risk their lives to report on stories around the world. To issue a blanket condemnation of the network as ‘fake news’ is also unfair.”
