Undated: Name calling is a form of verbal abuse in which insulting or demeaning labels are directed at an individual or group. This phenomenon is studied by a variety of academic disciplines such as anthropology, child psychology, and politics. It is also studied by rhetoricians, and a variety of other disciplines that study propaganda techniques and their causes and effects. The technique is most frequently employed within political discourse and school systems, in an attempt to negatively impact their opponent.

April 3: Trump Mocks NBC's Chuck Todd ... President escalates his war with the media.

When President Donald Trump gets into political trouble, he often blasts the news media for picking on him and distorting the facts. He did it again last weekend when he mocked NBC commentator Chuck Todd and made fun of Todd's appearance.

"When will Sleepy Eyes Chuck Todd and @NBCNews start talking about the Obama SURVEILLANCE SCANDAL and stop with the Fake Trump/Russia story," Trump wrote on Twitter. About 20 minutes later, Trump added: "It is the same Fake News Media that said there is 'no path to victory for Trump' that is now pushing the phony Russia story. Total scam!"

What apparently provoked the president was Todd's appearance on the NBC Nightly News Friday when he talked about the congressional and FBI investigations into potential connections between Trump associates and Russia regarding ways to intervene in the 2016 campaign and defeat Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. Todd criticized Trump for making unproven claims that President Barack Obama wiretapped Trump Tower in New York. Todd said this claim, which also is under investigation, created "all of the current problems for this West Wing....This has all been self-inflicted."

January 12: Rep. Waters Statement on Donald Trump’s Racist Slurs About Immigrants

“Donald Trump is a racist and indecent man with no good values who is woefully unfit and undeserving of the office in which he serves. That this president, a deeply flawed human being with no understanding of public policy, would make such ill-informed and deplorable comments about Haitians, Salvadorans, and immigrants from African countries, merely underscores everything we already know about him: he is a hopeless and ignorant bigot.

"As a matter of fact, everybody knows he's a con man," Waters added. "He's been a con man all of his life, long before he ever ran for office, and so this con man, Con Man Don, is going to keep it up and again he's coming for me, I'm coming for him."

March 11: Chuck Todd Rips Steve Mnuchin Over Trump’s “Son of a Bitch” Insult

Online, Todd seemed to take the slight in stride, tweeting Saturday night, “Don’t miss @MeetThePress tomorrow! I know folks may be tired in the morning due to springing forward, so set those clocks and DVRs now before your eyes get too sleepy.” But in person, his patience seemed to have frayed. “I bring my kids up to respect the office of the presidency and the president,” he said during an appearance on NBC4 Saturday night. “I don’t allow them to say anything negative, ever, about the president.”

Trump has been using the odd “sleepy eyes” insult since at least 2012, when he tweeted, “It's great that sleepy eyes @chucktodd gets no traction.” He has since called him “sleepy” more than a dozen times ...

“Chuck, you know I’ve been with the president in campaigns,” Mnuchin said. “You know he likes to put names on people. He did that through the entire presidential election, including all the Republicans that he beat. So these are campaign rally issues.” Todd was incredulous: “So you’re saying that’s acceptable behavior for the rest of the administration too, or it’s just unique to him?”

“Again, Chuck, this is something that is at a campaign rally,” Mnuchin responded. “The president likes making funny names ... I think you should be focused on the policies,” he continued. “He is using these vulgarities in the context of a campaign rally. Obviously, there were a lot of funny moments at that rally."

“Yeah,” Todd said, before ending the interview. “They were hilarious.”

March 11: Rep. Waters: Trump Criticism Not Surprising

Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., pushed back against Donald Trump’s attacks on her intelligence, and renewed her call for Congress to impeach the president, the Washington Times reports.

Don’t forget, this man who’s disparaging me has been called stupid, ignorant, uninformed, unhinged and a moron by his own staff and appointees,” Waters told a crowd at the J.W. Marriott during the Human Rights Campaign’s annual dinner in Los Angeles. “And so he had the nerve to attack me.”

June 19: Twitter users reacted strongly to President Donald Trump’s use of the word “infest” to describe illegal immigration.

Responding to criticism of a policy that has led to more than 2,000 children being separated from their parents at the border, Trump tweeted that Democrats were to blame.

“They don’t care about crime and want illegal immigrants, no matter how bad they may be, to pour into and infest our country, like MS-13,” he wrote, referencing a violent criminal gang based in Central America.

Critics of Trump’s language argued that it was dehumanizing to use a term traditionally used for pests.

March 26: Mike Pence talked Dan Coats out of quitting the Trump administration

Whenever Trump is souring on Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, whom he calls "Mister Rogers," Pence encourages him to stick with Coats.

Among the tensions the officials said have marred the relationship between the president and Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats: Trump pushed Coats to find evidence that former President Barack Obama wiretapped him; he demanded Coats publicly criticize the U.S. intelligence community as biased; and he accused Coats of being behind leaks of classified information. More recently Trump also fumed to aides after Coats publicly defended the importance of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in countering Russia's aggression, officials said.

But the tipping point for Coats came in December with Trump's abrupt decision to withdraw all U.S. troops from Syria, and the contentious departure of former Defense Secretary James Mattis after protesting the policy, according to the current and former officials. The vice president, who has repeatedly played the role of envoy between Trump and Coats, convinced his longtime Indiana friend to stay until at least this summer, the officials said.
