May 11: Trying to pin down what Donald Trump thinks about ... the minimum wage ...

In an interview with Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Aug. 20, 2015, Trump wouldn’t endorse a higher minimum wage.

"We're competing -- It's the United States against other places, Joe, where the taxes are lower, where the wages are lower, where lots of things are lower. Now, I want to create jobs so that you don't have to worry about the minimum wage. They're doing a great job that they're making much more than the minimum wage. But I think having a low minimum wage is not a bad thing for this country, Mika."

In an interview with Chuck Todd on NBC’s Meet the Press on May 8, 2016, Trump said the minimum wage is too low.

"I don't know how people make it on $7.25 an hour. Now, with that being said, I would like to see an increase of some magnitude. But I'd rather leave it to the states. Let the states decide. … I think people should get more. … I don't know how you live on $7.25 an hour."

May 29: Trump Overturns Minimum Wage For River And Backcountry Guides

President Trump has overturned a rule requiring outfitters to pay river and backcountry guides on public lands a minimum wage.

President Obama instituted a blanket minimum wage of $10.10 for all government contractors. It was also supposed to apply to private businesses that operate on federal lands and rivers. In an executive order this month Trump exempted those private businesses.

July 3: Donald Trump provides a lesson for Wisconsin Democrats on the minimum wage

When Harley-Davidson last week announced it would be moving production of some of its motorcycles overseas, it provided an important lesson in economics for American consumers: When the government imposes increased costs on businesses, those companies will take actions to counteract those measures.

In Harley’s case, the company decided the $2,200 per bike the European Union’s new retaliatory tariffs would cost them was damaging enough to shift more jobs to its overseas plants. Those EU tariffs, of course, were enacted in response to President Donald Trump’s tariffs on foreign steel and aluminum — as of this week, Trump is still criticizing Harley for not simply eating the drastic cost increase.

August 29: Trump’s trade deal with Mexico gives workers more rights than NAFTA. But there’s a catch.

If only the labor protections could be enforced.

American auto companies that assemble their cars in Mexico would also need to use more US-made car parts to avoid tariffs, which would help US factory workers. And about 40 percent of those cars would need to be made by workers earning at least $16 an hour — three times more than Mexico’s minimum wage.

These [and others] are much-needed reforms, and they address a lot of concerns that US labor unions had about NAFTA. The problem is that they seem impossible to enforce.

September 13: Trump and the Minimum Wage: How to Trade with Mexico

The Trump trade deal with Mexico is, in a smaller way for now, another of those rare Nixon in China moments. It has the potential to alter the arc of contemporary history.

Trump’s new trade agreement with Mexico contains a significant minimum-wage clause. It is a long-needed signal to U.S. workers that their concerns are taken seriously.

November 13: The Economic Policy Institute Minimum Wage Tracker

The federal minimum wage has not been raised since 2009. In the absence of action at the national level, many states and localities have raised their own minimum wages. Explore the map to see how these rapidly changing laws differ across the country, and read EPI’s recent research explaining the benefits of raising the minimum wage and eliminating the subminimum wage for tipped workers.

November 15: Trump’s Minimum Wage Alternative

Donald Trump is no one’s idea of a traditional Republican, but his speech Tuesday showed the rank-and-file a better way to help workers at the bottom. Democrats pound the need to raise the minimum wage, which is a tricky political issue for the GOP. “Fight for $15” fits well on a protest sign, and it’s easy to paint opponents of a higher minimum wage as heartless, even though their economic reasoning is sound.
