Michael Thomas
"Mike" Flynn (born December 1958) is a retired
United States Army
lieutenant general who was the eighteenth
director of the Defense Intelligence Agency and the first
national security advisor appointed by President
Donald
Trump.[1][2]
Flynn served as the twenty-fifth national security advisor from January 20,
2017, to February 13, 2017. He was forced to resign after information surfaced
he had misled Vice President
Mike Pence
about the nature and content of his communications with the Russian ambassador
to the U.S.,
Sergey Kislyak.[3][4]
Flynn's tenure of just 24 days as national security advisor is the shortest in
the history of the office.[5][6]

February 14:
President Donald Trump's ouster of national security adviser Michael Flynn, and
the circumstances leading up to it, have quickly become a major crisis for the
fledgling administration, forcing the White House on the defensive and
precipitating the first significant breach in relations between Trump and an
increasingly restive Republican Congress.

April 25: Senior lawmakers on the House
Oversight Committee say Michael Flynn, the former national security adviser,
appears to have violated the law when he took payments from groups associated
with foreign governments.
Chairman Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, and ranking member Elijah Cummings, D-Md., spoke at a news conference Tuesday, after they received a classified briefing.
"I
see no data to support the notion that Gen. Flynn complied with the law,"
Chaffetz said.

April 27: "General Flynn is a wonderful man,"
Trump said days after he fired his national security adviser. "I think he
has been treated very, very unfairly by the media, as I call it, the fake
media, in many cases. And I think it is really a sad thing that he was treated
so badly."
Right around that same time,
Trump told a group of reporters of Flynn: "I asked for his resignation. He
respectfully gave it. With all that being said, I think he's a fine man."
... these Trump comments came AFTER it became clear
that Flynn has misled everyone, up to Vice President Mike Pence, regarding his
contacts -- and the nature of those contacts -- with [Russian] Kislyak. Even
after all of that, Trump called him a "wonderful man" and
blamed Flynn's
departure, at least in part, on the "fake media." [See February

according to a letter written by the Department of Defense's acting inspector
general to House Oversight Chairman Jason Chaffetz.

the letter, which was released by House Oversight ranking member Elijah
Cummings Thursday, comes as Chaffetz is asking the Pentagon to consider making
Flynn forfeit hundreds of thousands of dollars to make up for payments from
entities linked to the governments of Russia and Turkey.

December 2: Trump tweets he fired Michael
Flynn because Flynn lied to the vice president and the FBI — which could play
into a case of obstruction of justice against him.
https://www.vox.com/2017/12/2/16727988/trump-michael-flynn-fbi-lies-obstruction
December 2: “The question of whether Trump
committed obstruction of justice when he asked Comey to drop the investigation
on Valentine’s Day will largely turn on Trump’s intent: was he just trying to
put in a good word for Flynn, or was he in fact trying to end a criminal
investigation?” [Harvard Law professor and former federal prosecutor Alex]
Whiting said in an email. “If he genuinely believed that Flynn did nothing
wrong, that tends to support the former interpretation. But if, as he now
admits, he knew that Flynn had lied to the FBI, a federal crime, then he knew
that by asking Comey to drop the investigation, he was seeking to end a
meritorious criminal investigation.”
Others said that the tweet itself wasn’t enough to prove obstruction, but might
have laid the breadcrumbs to more evidence that could.

fire General Flynn because he lied to the Vice President and the FBI,"
the Saturday tweet reads. "He has pled guilty to those lies. It is a shame

Michael Flynn.

December 4: The
White House's chief lawyer told President Donald Trump in January he believed
then-national security adviser Michael Flynn had misled the FBI and lied to Vice
President Mike Pence and should be fired, a source familiar with the matter said
Monday.
The description of the conversation raises new questions about what Trump knew
about Flynn's situation when he urged then-FBI Director James Comey to drop the
investigation into Flynn and whether anyone in the White House, including the
President himself, attempted to obstruct justice. Special counsel Robert Mueller
is investigating whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russians, a probe led
by Comey until Trump fired him.

December 4: Former national security adviser
Michael Flynn has provided "substantial" aid in the Russia investigation and
beyond — and that merits a judge's consideration at Flynn's sentencing this
month,
prosecutors said in court papers late Tuesday.
The government said in a memo to a federal judge that it believes sentencing for
Flynn should be lenient and that even a sentence without prison time "is
appropriate and warranted."
Prosecutors say Flynn helped with "several ongoing investigations," not just the
Russia inquiry, including a redacted criminal investigation. Authorities say
some of Flynn's help may not have yet borne fruit but they've asked a judge to
sentence him anyway as had been planned on Dec. 18.

rejected on Friday a suggestion from Michael T. Flynn, President Trump’s former
national security adviser, that he had been tricked into lying last year to
F.B.I. agents investigating Russia’s election interference and ties to Trump
associates.
Prosecutors laid out a pattern of lies by Mr. Flynn to Vice President Mike
Pence, senior White House aides, federal investigators and the news media in the
weeks before and after the presidential inauguration as he scrambled to obscure
the truth about his communications during the presidential transition with
Sergey I. Kislyak, the Russian ambassador to the United States at the time.

December 17: Two associates of former
National Security Adviser Michael Flynn were charged by federal prosecutors with
acting as agents of a foreign government Monday.
Bijan Kian, Flynn’s former business partner, and Kamil Ekim Alptekin, a Turkish
businessman, conspired to influence American politicians to extradite Turkish
cleric
Fethullah Gulen. The indictment says their work was concealed as being
between Flynn’s and Alptekin’s consulting firms, but in reality it was on behalf
of the Turkish government.

December 18: Federal Judge Delays Michael
Flynn Sentencing In Case Of Lying To Feds
U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan said he has significant outstanding questions
about the case, including how the government's Russia investigation was impeded
and the material impact of Flynn's lies on the special counsel's inquiry.
Flynn had spent more than a year giving what prosecutors called all the
cooperation they wanted, including in 62 hours of meetings and the production of
"sweeping categories" of documents and electronic devices.
