August 15: AP fact check: Donald Trump on U.S. intervention in the Middle East

Donald Trump on Monday painted the Middle East as an oasis of stability before Hillary Clinton’s tenure as secretary of state, arguing that she and President Barack Obama “launched” the Islamic State group onto the world.

In trying to outline how he would defeat the threat, Trump himself launched several other false claims.

He said Clinton and Obama sought to install a democracy in Libya and pushed for immediate change in leadership in Syria, accusing the pair of embarking on a “nation-building” strategy that few Republicans would ascribe to Obama’s intervention-averse administration.

November 29: Trump inspired Libyans to call slavery reports 'fake news'

People around the world were shocked and angered by a disturbing report from CNN revealing the horrific reality of human slave markets operating in Libya.

The report, released earlier this month, drew international attention and condemnation of the slave markets. The slave trade has cropped-up throughout Libya in the wake of the North African country's ongoing civil war, with African migrants being sold for as little as $400.

Now, however, thanks to the influence of U.S. President Donald Trump and his war on the media, and in particular his attacks on CNN, some Libyans have begun questioning whether the report is true.

The number of strikes is small but points to the threat the Trump administration believes Libya still poses and raises questions about whether the Pentagon has tried to obscure operations there.

March 29: John Bolton to Kim Jong Un: Give Up Your Nukes Like Gaddafi Did—Before We Killed Him

Trump’s incoming national security adviser is sending the exact wrong message to Pyongyang. Maybe because deep down he really wants to bomb it.

April 29: John Bolton: U.S. Using ‘Libya Model’ for North Korea Negotiations

Despite North Korea citing Libya’s nuclear dismantlement and the 2011 civil war as a reason to keep its nukes, Trump's national security adviser sees it as a model.

May 15: North Korea and the US backslid from previously rosy relations on Tuesday when media from Pyongyang attacked President Donald Trump's national security adviser John Bolton for his comments about North Korean denuclearization.

Bolton, who has extensively advocated for the US using military options against North Korea, recently said that the US should treat North Korea's disarmament like Libya's, something which preceded the death of Libya's former leader, Muammar Gaddafi.

North Korean media shot back on Tuesday, calling the comparison "absolutely absurd" and expressing a "feeling of repugnance towards" Bolton.

May 16: North Korea threatens to cancel Trump summit, reminds world it really loves its nukes ... Oh, and it insulted John Bolton.

In a statement carried by the state-run Korean Central News Agency on Tuesday night, a top Pyongyang official criticized America’s insistence that North Korea completely dismantle its nuclear program and even warned that the regime might scuttle the upcoming summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

“If the US is trying to drive us into a corner to force our unilateral nuclear abandonment, we will no longer be interested in such dialogue and cannot but reconsider our proceeding to the DPRK-US summit,” said Kim Kye Gwan, a vice foreign minister, using the official acronym for North Korea.

Experts believe Kim thinks nuclear weapons keep his regime safe. Part of that is because of what happened to Muammar Qaddafi, Libya’s former dictator. Qaddafi had a nuclear weapons program but in 2003 he made a deal to remove those weapons from his country in exchange for economic benefits.

Then in 2011, anti-Qaddafi rebels captured and killed him — with American help.

Undated: Did President Obama use the term "shit show" in private to refer to the escalating violence in Libya following the death of Muammar Gaddafi.?
Claim
President Obama called Libya a "Shit Show" and the media ignored the vulgarity.
Rating
 Mostly False
What's true
President Obama reportedly used the term "shit show" in private to refer to the escalating violence in Libya following the death of Muammar al-Qaddafi.
What's false
President Obama's comment was about an escalating war, not the country itself; Obama's remarks were widely reported by the media at the time.
Origin
During an Oval Office meeting on immigration on 11 January 2018, President Donald Trump reportedly used the term “shit hole” in reference to African countries and said that he’d rather take immigrants from places like Norway. The comment was widely condemned in the media (several news anchors bluntly called the president a racist) and countries such as Botswana and Haiti released statements calling for an apology from the President of the United States.

July 11: The President of the United States Donald Trump has allegedly sent a letter on Tuesday to the Speaker of the Tobruk-based House of Representatives (HoR) Aqilah Saleh and the Head of the Tripoli-based Presidential Council, Fayez Al-Sirraj, scolding them for badly tackling the oil crescent region conflict.

According to the letter, which Libyan local TV channel Libya 218 reported, Trump threatened Saleh and Al-Sirraj of international prosecution and sanctions if the oil terminals are not open and oil experts are not resumed immediately without any preconditions, adding if they did not cooperate, the US will use force to enforce stability in the oil region.

Trump said clearly in the letter, according to Libya 218 TV, that he was relying on Libya to boost production as part of his plans to sanction Iran through oil production and exports, and what happened in the oil crescent in Libya was not good for his plans.
