Joseph Mifsud (born 1960)[1]
is a Maltese academic, with reportedly high level connections to the
Russian government.[2]
In 2016, he became involved with
George Papadopoulos, an advisor to the
Donald Trump presidential campaign, and was later accused of being a link
between that campaign and Russia. In 2018, he was described as missing, and an
Italian court listed his location as "residence unknown".[3]
In March 2016, shortly after Papadopoulos was named as a foreign policy advisor
to the Trump campaign, Mifsud met Papadopoulos in Rome. They later met in
London, where Mifsud allegedly introduced Papadopoulos to a Russian woman that
he falsely claimed was Putin's niece; Mifsud has denied the report.[6][12]
At a meeting in April, Mifsud told Papadopoulos that he had learned the Russians
were in possession of thousands of emails that were damaging to
Hillary Clinton. Papadopoulos allegedly repeated the information to an
Australian diplomat in London, Alexander Downer, who later reported to American
authorities that Papadopoulos had apparently known about Russia's theft of
emails from Democratic sources before it was publicly reported. Papopoulos has
since publicly denied any recollection of this topic with Downer. The FBI then
launched an investigation into possible
connections between Russia and the Trump campaign.[16]

May 14: Mueller's Probe Is Even More
Expansive Than It Seems
The special counsel’s team has interviewed a number of big names. But their
interest in more obscure players tells a story, too.
[A] lawyer allegedly questioned by Mueller’s team, Stephan Roh, is a German
multimillionaire with ties to Russia. He hired [Joseph] Mifsud as a
“business-development consultant” in 2015, and is Mifsud’s “partner and best
friend” and “the money behind him ...” Roh’s wife is Olga Roh, a Russian
fashion designer who appeared on the British reality TV show Meet the
Russians. He’s also in the nuclear-energy business: He acquired a small
British nuclear consulting firm from scientist Dr. John Harbottle in 2005,
according to the BBC, and invited Harbottle on an all-expenses paid trip to
Moscow shortly thereafter, Harbottle told the outlet. Harbottle declined the
offer because he “smelt a rat,” he said, and was then fired. Within three years,
Severnvale Nuclear Services’ turnover went from under $100,000 to $44 million,
per the BBC.

October:
A Putin Pal Is Killed & A Professor Is Still
Missing. Who's Next On The Hit List?
There have been over 30 possible victims of Putin's use of assassination
as a weapon against enemies of his autocratic regime. The hits often are
carried out by the FSB.
It was the ride of Saak Albertovich Karapetyan's life. It also was his last as
Vladimir Putin apparently has claimed yet another victim in his relentless
campaign to assassinate those he deems enemies of his autocratic regime. But
Karapetyan is different because of his insider status and intimate knowledge of
the Russian president's ill deeds ....
Meanwhile, Joseph Mifsud, the Maltese professor who enticed
Trump campaign coffee boy George Popadolpoulos with the disclosure that the
Kremlin had "dirt" on Hillary Clinton in the form of thousands of emails --
perhaps the first such reference to them whispered to drooling campaign
officials -- disappeared on November 2, 2017 from the private university in Rome
where he taught and remains missing.
The 57-year-old professor's cellphone went dead, his email account disappeared
and he has not sent any WhatsApp messages, his frequent means of communication
with his Ukrainian fiancee, identified in media accounts as Anna, who has a
daughter she says he fathered. It is probable that Mifsud was "played" by
Russian intelligence services, which frequently have made use of non-government
cut-outs to achieve foreign policy objectives.
Mifsud's disappearance -- probably not coincidentally -- occurred three days
after the office of Special Counsel Robert Mueller announced that Papadopoulos
had been indicted, pleaded guilty to a charge of lying to FBI agents and agreed
to cooperate with Mueller's Russia scandal investigation. Prior to his
sentencing to 14 days in prison in September, Papadopoulos also was accused of
helping Mifsud leave the U.S. without being detained.
Mifsud is now presumed dead and has been described as such in court papers.
