December 26: Trump swears his administration will only 'buy American and hire American'

What he didn't explain in his Instagram vow, however, is why his businesses haven't yet followed those rules that he claims to be so "simple." In the last 15 years, Trump's businesses have hired "at least 1,256 foreign guest workers," CNN reported. Since Trump launched his presidential campaign in 2015, his companies have requested "at least 190 foreign visa workers."

Most recently, it was reported that the Trump Winery vineyard is looking to hire six foreign workers to start just days after Trump is sworn in as president. Trump also reportedly got approval from the U.S. Labor Department in October to hire 64 foreign workers to fill temporary jobs over the winter at his Mar-a-Lago Club in Florida.

January 17: General Motors (GM) announced plans to invest at least $1 billion in U.S. factories. The company also committed to creating or retaining about 7,000 U.S. jobs in the next few years ... These plans have been in the works for some time, according to a company executive, and aren't part of any arrangement with President Trump.

January 21: Trump: Jobs Returning ‘Because of Me’ ... Two days before becoming president, Donald Trump tweeted that GM, Ford, Lockheed Martin and others announced investments and job creation in the U.S. “because of me!” But industry experts and company officials say the recent moves were largely market-driven and were in the works before Trump was elected.

To be sure, CEOs at the companies Trump listed — all of whom have met personally with Trump since his election — have said they are encouraged by Trump’s promises to cut regulations and lower corporate taxes, moves they said that will allow them to grow.

But are the flurry of recent corporate announcements about investments and job creation in the U.S. symptomatic of the Trump effect? The answer is more complex than Trump’s tweets suggest. Many of the company announcements tweeted by Trump — especially those from GM and Ford — fit a years-long trend.

March 10: Trump did not add 235,000 jobs to the economy. Obama did.

“One of the most important elements of analyzing labor market reports is that they’re lagging indicators so they tend to be a reflection of what has been happening in the economy in the prior six months to a year,” Frances Donald, senior economist at Manulife Asset Management, told the publication. “The jobs numbers that we’ll see six months from now will probably be a better reflection of the new administration.”

March 14: Why Donald Trump Is Wrong About Manufacturing Jobs and China
https://www.newyorker.com/business/currency/why-donald-trump-is-wrong-about-manufacturing-jobs-and-china

March 17: Trump touted January gains that occurred before his inauguration.

It’s true that the U.S. economy has added 473,000 jobs this year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. But Trump wrongly takes credit for the 238,000 jobs added in January to make the claim that “nearly half a million” jobs have been created “since I took the oath of office.”

The BLS measures payrolls as of the week containing the 12th day of the month. Trump wasn’t sworn in until Jan. 20. So the January numbers were based on a survey that was concluded before Trump took office.

We also note that this positive jobs trend is not something that began in January, or even since the election. As we have noted previously, the economy added more than 250,000 new jobs a month in 20 of the 96 months under President Obama. Overall, the nation’s economy added 11.5 million jobs under Obama, including a record 75 straight months of job growth — which was extended to 76 months in February.

April 18:
Buy American and Hire American: Putting American Workers First

On April 18, 2017, President Trump signed the Buy American and Hire American Executive Order, which seeks to create higher wages and employment rates for U.S. workers and to protect their economic interests by rigorously enforcing and administering our immigration laws. It also directs DHS, in coordination with other agencies, to advance policies to help ensure H-1B visas are awarded to the most-skilled or highest-paid beneficiaries.

USCIS is working on a combination of rulemaking, policy memoranda, and operational changes to implement the Buy American and Hire American Executive Order. We are creating and carrying out these initiatives to protect the economic interests of U.S. workers and prevent fraud and abuse within the immigration system.

Trump (finally!) reaches million-jobs mark ... Trump can finally say, truthfully, that he's created more than a million jobs since entering office.
https://www.politico.com/story/2017/08/04/economy-added-209-000-jobs-in-july-241325

August 4:
The U.S. economy added a strong 209,000 jobs in July, more than economists had expected. The unemployment rate fell to 4.3%, matching a 16-year low. Just after the Great Recession in 2009, unemployment peaked at 10%.
http://kfor.com/2017/08/04/milestone-for-trump-1-million-new-jobs-in-six-months/

August 4: Of course, Trump's six-month record is far better than Obama's first six months, when 3.4 million jobs were lost. That's because Obama was sworn in during the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, when the economy was hemorrhaging jobs.

By contrast, Obama handed Trump an economy that was close to what economists consider full employment. The unemployment rate on Inauguration Day was 4.8%, and it has fallen since then, to 4.3% in July.

Trump's record of 1.1 million jobs in six months is less than the 1.2 million added during the same period a year ago under Obama. It essentially matches the first six months of Obama's second term, when 1.1 million jobs were added.

August 10: President Trump touted the fact that 1,074,000 jobs have been added to the economy since he took office on social media Wednesday.

While that number is accurate according to numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, experts warn that it may not be the best measure for taking the temperature on the economy, and certainly not an accurate reflection of Presidential efforts.

Employment has been steadily increasing since at least 2013, says Jennifer Hunt, former Chief Economist of the U.S. Department of Labor, and any president—not just Trump—is likely not to have as big of an impact on job creation statistics as they might claim.

“There’s nothing actually special or surprising” about the number, says Hunt. There’s a few reasons for that. The job addition or employment rate tends to increase proportional to population growth, so the job addition rate tends to increase steadily without having much or any effect on unemployment.

December 1: Under Trump, US jobs are moving overseas even faster than before

All told, in the year since Trump was elected, more than 93,000 jobs have been certified by the Department of Labor as lost to outsourcing or trade competition, slightly higher than the average of about 87,000 in the preceding five years. But federal contractors made up 10% of that number, rather than the previous average of 4%. That suggests companies that work for the government like General Motors, Boeing and United Technologies aren’t worried about political repercussions from the man in the White House.

January 6: Trump’s first-year jobs numbers were very, very good ... On Friday morning, the government’s Bureau of Labor Statistics released employment numbers for December, bookending President Trump’s first year in office. While the number of jobs added was lower than many analysts expected — up 148,000 — it was a continuation of the trend of growth seen over the course of 2017.

With those numbers in hand, we can now compare Trump’s first year in office to his predecessors’. And in that comparison, Trump comes out looking pretty good.

January 6: President Trump's First Year Of Job Growth Was Below President Obama's Last Six Years ... Over the September to December timeframe, there were 163,000 additional jobs per month and for the year 171,000 jobs were added monthly. This compares to President Obama’s last six years where the job market averaged at least 174,000 per month and hit 250,000 in 2014. January 7: Bright spot for Trump in 2017, job creation faces new challenges ... Despite a bumpy first year, President Donald Trump can point to at least one important success: the number of jobs grew and the unemployment rate fell in 2017. January 30: As President Donald Trump prepares to address the State of the Union for the first time since assuming office, his pro-business agenda and victories are expected to take center stage.

From economic growth and job creation, to the surging stock market, business has boomed in America over the past year; spurred in large part by expectations – and the resulting fulfillment – of a longstanding promise to overhaul the U.S. tax code.

Here’s a look at what has changed since the president was inaugurated one year ago:

May 22: Employers can restrict workers’ ability to band together to pursue legal claims on matters such as wages, age discrimination, sexual harassment and other workplace issues, the Supreme Court ruled Monday.

In the 5-4 decision, the court said private-sector workers can be required to settle disputes against their company one-on-one through arbitration. This is a blow to workers’ rights, advocates say, because employees often need to join together to file expensive lawsuits and win meaningful awards.

May 31: Immigrants helped found more than half of the U.S.'s 87 startup companies valued at more than a billion dollars in 2016, according to a study by the National Foundation for American Policy, with the 11 biggest of those companies employing more than 17,000 people.

The Trump administration recently proposed to cancel an Obama-era visa aimed at helping foreign entrepreneurs start new businesses in the U.S. The president and other advocates for cutting immigration levels argue that immigrants are taking jobs from U.S. workers, but in many instances, immigrants not only contribute to the U.S. economy, but create more jobs for Americans.

May 31: Sears Holdings Corp., which controls Sears and Kmart, says it has "identified approximately 100 non-profitable stores, 72 of which will begin store closing sales in the near future," in the latest sign of the retailer's struggles to stay afloat.

The figure represents about 8 percent of Sears' remaining stores. Sears Holdings announced the closures in its quarterly results released on Thursday, in which it reported total revenues of approximately $2.9 billion — down from $4.2 billion in the same quarter a year ago.

June 25: Harley-Davidson will move some production out of US after retaliatory tariffs

Harley-Davidson's move is some of the most direct evidence yet that tit-for-tat trade fights between the United States and other countries have consequences for American companies. Harley-Davidson said it stood to lose as much as $100 million a year.

The company did not say whether any jobs are at risk. Harley-Davidson, based in Milwaukee, employs more than 6,000 people globally. Spokesperson Michael Pflughoeft said the company was "assessing the potential impact" on jobs.

It makes most of its motorcycles in the United States, at plants in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Missouri.

Europe is its second-largest market behind the United States. In 2017, nearly 40,000 European customers bought new Harleys, compared with about 148,000 in the United States.

May 15: The Last Shift: What Really Happened To Those Carrier Jobs Trump Saved

There are still jobs at the fan-coil assembly plant in Indianapolis. The workers who survived the layoffs, the senior-most members of Carrier’s Indianapolis assembly process, are there. These are the jobs President Trump claims to have saved. About 700. “There were five production lines there before the announcement,” the local union head says. “There are three now.”

July 6: Trump Scoreboard still showing better numbers on jobs than wages as total hiring tops 3 million for the presidency

But wage growth, as measured by the 12-month change in average hourly earnings for production and nonsupervisory workers, is still mediocre. After 2.7% growth in June, median wage growth for his presidency stands at 2.4% — slower than the 3-plus percent gains during the presidencies of George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.

July 23: Trump's tariff war could devastate Detroit

If the full-size pickup segment were to open up with the ending of the 'chicken tax,' it could wipe out earnings at Ford, GM, and Fiat Chrysler.

Industry officials have long warned that tariffs could add thousands of dollars to the cost of a new car, truck or crossover and, at a time when the U.S. vehicle market is already softening, lead to a sharp downturn in sales — and American jobs.

But some experts are now warning that the tariff war could backfire in an even bigger way, potentially costing Detroit’s Big Three their dominance in the profitable full-size pickup market.

July 24: Ivanka Trump is shuttering her clothing line in order to focus on her role as senior adviser in her father's White House, the company announced Tuesday.

The closure of Ms. Trump's business, which was first reported by the The Wall Street Journal, will reduce its entanglements in President Donald Trump's "America First" agenda and protectionist trade practices. According to a report, workers at one of the Chinese factories of Ivanka Trump's clothing line were paid $62 a week. Her business employs 18 people.

But in 2017 as anti-Trump backlash began to grow over connection to her father's divisive and controversial policies, retailers began distancing themselves from the Trump line

July 24: New York Daily News cuts half of its staff

The New York Daily News announced on Monday plans to eliminate half of its newsroom as part of a broader effort to refocus the newspaper.

The Daily News, once the country's largest-circulation newspaper, has been among the most aggressive New York City publications in its coverage of President Donald Trump, with the newspaper's cover often needling Trump about recent scandals or missteps.

July 27: Advocates warn of cover-up as Trump moves to scrap worker-safety rule

The administration has moved to roll back an Obama-era requirement that big employers submit info about workplace injuries to the government.

The Department of Labor said the original rule threatened workers' privacy, as detailed data about individual incidents could be subject to Freedom of Information Act requests. The proposed changes would "better protect personally identifiable information or data," while reducing the burden on employers, it said in a press release.

The proposal drew sharp criticism from public health advocates and former Labor Department officials who developed the rule.

August 30: President Trump on Thursday headed off a potential substantial raise for federal workers in the event of a congressional budget deadlock, repeating his call for lawmakers to freeze the salaries of 2 million federal employees in 2019.

The House has passed legislation making no mention of a raise, effectively endorsing the freeze that Trump originally proposed in February. The Senate has passed a competing measure allowing a 1.9 percent increase, a dispute that adds another sticking point to already delicate budget talks on Capitol Hill.

September 9: ... hourly earnings went up by an average of 10 cents last month. The economy added a total of 201,000 jobs in August, keeping the topline unemployment rate steady at 3.9 percent, even though the last two months’ worth of job gains were revised down by 50,000 jobs.

Other sources confirmed that the labor market still has momentum. Payroll processor ADP reported that 163,000 private-sector jobs were added in August — a drop from the 219,000 added in July — with mid-sized businesses responsible for the lion’s share of the growth.

October 15: Sears Holdings plans to close another 142 unprofitable stores, as part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy, on top of 46 store closings announced in August.

Liquidation sales at the additional stores are expected to begin within two weeks, according to a court filing.

"As we look toward the holiday season, Sears and Kmart stores remain open for business and our dedicated associates look forward to serving our members and customers," Sears chairman Eddie Lampert said in a statement.

The company has 687 stores remaining, including Kmart locations.

November 26: The number of farms filing for bankruptcy is increasing across the Upper Midwest.

A new analysis from the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis shows 84 farms filed for bankruptcy in Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Montana in the 12 months that ended in June. That’s more than double the number over the same period in 2013 and 2014.

The Star Tribune reports the increase in Chapter 12 filings reflect low prices for corn, soybeans, milk and beef. The situation has gotten worse for farmers since June because of the retaliatory tariffs that have closed the Chinese market for soybeans and held back exports of milk and beef. Chapter 12 bankruptcy allows for repayment of debt over three years.

November 26: GM to slash over 14,000 jobs from North American workforce

The reduction could include the closing of up to five domestic plants.

In the most far-reaching shake-up since the company emerged from bankruptcy more than eight years ago, General Motors will shutter three North American assembly plants and two other facilities, while also eliminating 15 percent of its salaried and salaried contract workforce, moves that together will cost an estimated 14,700 jobs.

The cuts are part of a plan to adapt to changing market demands favoring SUVs over sedans and coupes, while also shifting focus to the electrified and self-driving vehicles GM sees as central to the industry’s future.
