Undated: Jeffry Lane Flake[1]
(born December 31, 1962) is an American politician who served as a
United States Senator from
Arizona from
2013 to 2019. A
Republican, Flake previously served in the
United States House of Representatives from 2001 to 2013.
Flake was one of the bipartisan "Gang
of Eight" U.S. senators that pushed an immigration reform bill through the
Senate in 2013. He is known as a vocal critic of
President
Donald
Trump, but has generally voted in line with Trump's position. Flake
announced on October 24, 2017, that he would not seek re-election in
2018; Democrat
Kyrsten Sinema won his seat in the election, becoming the first Democratic
member of the Senate from Arizona since
Dennis DeConcini's election in 1988. A poll by
Morning Consult one week after Flake's departure showed Flake with a 28% and
49% approval and disapproval rating, making him the United States' most
unpopular retired Senator as of 2019.[2]

September 26: Senator Jeff Flake calls Trump 'uninformed and uncaring'
Senator Jeff Flake has slammed Donald Trump as "uncaring and uninformed" for
challenging a woman who delayed reporting a sexual assault claim against Supreme
Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
The Republican, who is a fierce and frequent critic of the president, also
criticised the "toxic political culture" in US politics.
He said both Mr Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford had become "unwitting
combatants in an undeclared war".

October 1: Jeff Flake on whether he would challenge Trump in 2020 primary: 'I don't
see that happening'
Sen. Jeff Flake hopes President
Donald Trump will face a primary opponent in 2020. The Arizona Republican
just doubts he will challenge the president himself, he said Monday.
The retiring Trump critic's comments came even as he heads to New Hampshire, the
nation's first primary state, for the second time this year. He is fresh off a
dramatic political moment on Friday, when he joined Democrats and a couple other
Republicans in calling for Senate leaders to delay a vote on Supreme Court
nominee Brett Kavanaugh while the FBI investigates sexual misconduct accusations
against the appeals court judge.

October 3: A pair of Republican senators who could hold Brett Kavanaugh’s fate in
their hands blasted President Trump for
mocking Christine Blasey Ford over her allegations that the Supreme Court
nominee sexually attacked her.
“There’s no time and no place for remarks like that. To discuss something this
sensitive at a political rally is just not right. It’s just not right. I wish he
hadn’t had done it,” Arizona GOP Sen. Jeff Flake
told NBC’s “Today” show on Wednesday, adding, “It’s kind of appalling.”

November 7: Trump boasts about having 'retired' Flake: 'I did the country a great
service'
“In Jeff Flake’s case it’s me, pure and simple. I retired him. I’m very proud of
it, I did the country a great service," Trump said during a sprawling press
conference at the White House a day after the midterm elections.
"He is retired. I’d like to call it another word, but we’re going to treat him
with great respect,” Trump added.
Flake, who announced in October 2017 that he would retire after this year, has
acknowledged that his vocal criticism of the president’s rhetoric would likely
make winning a GOP primary to seek reelection untenable.
“The bottom line is if I were to run a campaign that I could be proud of and
where I didn’t have to cozy up to the president and his positions or his
behavior, I could not win in a Republican primary, that’s the bottom line,"
Flake said on MSNBC’s
“Morning Joe” after announcing his retirement.

November 9: Flake floats GOP primary run against Trump:
'Somebody needs to run'
The retiring Arizona senator isn't ruling out a 2020 bid. John Kasich or Ben
Sasse would be good, too, he said.

November 14: Republican senator threatens to vote against judges after GOP blocks vote
on Mueller protection bill
Retiring Republican Sen. Jeff Flake said Wednesday that he will not vote to
confirm the Trump administration's judicial nominees on the Senate floor or
advance them in the Senate Judiciary Committee if legislation to protect special
counsel Robert Mueller does not receive a Senate floor vote.
Flake made the new judicial threat after he and Sen. Chris Coons, a Delaware
Democrat, unsuccessfully attempted to force a Senate vote on the special counsel
legislation Wednesday. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell objected to the
request for a vote from Flake.
