November 6: [On his first overseas trip to
Asia] President Donald
Trump told a gathering of business leaders in Tokyo that Japan has an unfair
advantage on trade and that he intends to fix that imbalance by making it easier
to do business in the US.
“Try building your cars in the United States instead of shipping them over.
That’s not too much to ask," Trump said. "Is that rude to ask?”
[Japanese automakers, however, already have huge factories in the U.S. that
churn out millions of cars each year].

November 6: When asked whether tighter
gun-control laws could help prevent such shootings, Trump said the attack "isn't
a guns situation" and that "mental health is your problem here." He said the
initial investigation indicates the killer was a "very deranged individual."
Fewer people have been shot to death in Japan in the past five years than were
killed in the Texas shooting on Sunday,

May 29: Tariffs on steel, threats of car
import levies and intense pressure for a two-way economic deal: despite warm
personal ties, U.S. President Donald Trump is giving Japanese Prime Minister
Shinzo Abe a decidedly tough time on trade.
Trump has also withdrawn from a multilateral Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)
promoted by Abe as a counterweight to China, abandoned a climate change accord
backed by Tokyo and is pursuing talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un
notwithstanding Abe’s warnings about past mistakes.
Japan has notified the WTO it reserves the right to take counter-measures
against the U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum totaling $440 million, the amount
of added duties the U.S. tariffs would impose on its exports of those products.

July 25: Six members of a Japanese doomsday
cult held responsible for the deaths of dozens of people have been executed,
according to Japan's justice minister.
The group's leader Shoko Asahara -- real name Chizuo Matsumoto --
was executed earlier in July, along with six other members of the cult,
which was responsible for a sarin gas attack on a Tokyo subway in 1995.
Other members of Aum Shinrikyo who had been sentenced to death were hanged
Thursday morning, Justice Minister Yoko Kawakami told reporters.
The Tokyo attack was part of a murder spree throughout the country that left 29
people dead. The subway attack itself killed 13 people and injured more than
6,000 others.

war between China and Japan?

Washington cools its support for Tokyo, the dynamics in the region could shift
dangerously.

August 27: North Korea accuses US of
'hatching a criminal plot to unleash a war'
North Korea's state newspaper accused the US of "hatching a criminal plot to
unleash a war against the DPRK" while "having a dialogue with a smile on its
face" Sunday following a report on South Korean radio that American forces in
Japan were running drills aimed at invading Pyongyang.
US Forces Japan (USFJ) told CNN on Monday it was "not aware of the drills"
mentioned in North and South Korean media reports.
"In general, US aircrafts and ships operate from Japan every day in support of
our commitments to our allies and partners in the region and in the interests of
regional peace and security," Col. John Hutcheson, the Director of public
affairs of USFJ, said in a statement.

November 8: In case you missed it: Trump’s
awkward response to a Japanese reporter
Trump made several references in his news conference to how he feels mistreated
by the press. Overshadowed by that ruckus was his exchange with a Japanese
reporter, whose question Trump brusquely dismissed as incomprehensible due to
his accent — prompting both criticism and sympathy from those watching the scene
unfold.
