Undated: Greenland is the
world's largest island,[d]
located between the
Arctic
and
Atlantic oceans, east of the
Canadian Arctic Archipelago. It is an
autonomous territory[10]
within the
Kingdom of Denmark. Though
physiographically a part of the continent of
North America, Greenland has been politically and culturally associated with
Europe (specifically
Norway and
Denmark, the
colonial
powers, as well as the nearby island of
Iceland) for
more than a millennium.[11]
Greenland is divided into five
municipalities —
Sermersooq,
Kujalleq,
Qeqertalik,
Qeqqata, and
Avannaata.
It has two
unincorporated areas — the
Northeast Greenland National Park and the
Thule Air Base. The last one, even if under Danish control, is administered
by the
United States Air Force.[13]
At 70%, Greenland has one of the highest shares of renewable energy in the
world, mostly coming from
hydropower.
Several
American and Danish military bases are located in Greenland, including the
American
Thule Air Base, which is home to the
21st Space Wing's global network of sensors providing missile warning, space
surveillance and space control to
North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and
Air Force Space Command (AFSPC).[102]
In
1995, a political scandal resulted in Denmark after a report revealed the
government had given tacit permission for
nuclear weapons to be located in Greenland, in contravention of Denmark's
1957
nuclear-free zone policy.[103][60]
The United States built a secret nuclear powered base, called
Camp
Century, in the Greenland ice sheet.[104]
On 21 January 1968, a B-52G, with four nuclear bombs aboard as part of
Operation Chrome Dome,
crashed on the ice of the North Star Bay while attempting an emergency
landing at Thule Air Base.[105]
The resulting fire caused extensive radioactive contamination.[106]
One of the
H-bombs remains lost.[107][108]

November 8:
Months after U.S. President Donald Trump made waves with a proposal to buy
Greenland, the State Department is laying the groundwork to open a consulate on
the sparsely populated island, marking a new diplomatic outpost in a
fast-melting Arctic where rivals such as Russia and China are pushing for
greater influence.
