Trump to announce do-over on fuel economy rules
for automakers
http://money.cnn.com/2017/03/14/news/economy/automakers-fuel-economy-trump/index.html
March 20: When President Trump traveled to
Michigan last week to announce that his administration will reevaluate (and
almost certainly weaken) a key environmental achievement of the past decade —
new fuel economy and greenhouse gas standards for cars and light trucks — he
alleged that “industry-killing regulations” had contributed to a loss of jobs in
the U.S. automobile sector. The truth is, however, that there is no factual
basis for the claim that stricter standards have killed jobs. There is, however,
abundant evidence that these regulations have saved Americans billions of
dollars at the pump, bolstered U.S. energy independence, fostered automotive
innovation, and led to major reductions in air pollution and greenhouse gas
emissions.

October 9: The decision by the head of the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to revoke the Clean
Power Plan – our only nationwide limits on carbon pollution from power
plants – is Scott Pruitt’s latest reprehensible effort to tear down America’s
public health and environmental safeguards.
The proposed rule Pruitt signed today, if implemented, would put an end to a
flexible and cost-effective Obama-era program to reduce unchecked carbon
pollution from fossil fuel-fired power plants – measures that would prevent
thousands of deaths and many more childhood asthma attacks while reducing
greenhouse gas emissions.
[Pruitt's] campaigns and political organizations received extensive
contributions from Clean Power Plan opponents, including $25,000 from coal
company Murray Energy just one month before the Clean Power Plan oral argument
before a federal appeals court in June 2016.
Those industry opponents now stand to benefit from Pruitt’s proposal – at the
expense of the health and safety of American families.

July 6: People across social media (and even
at EPA
headquarters) rejoiced Thursday afternoon when news of Scott Pruitt’s
resignation from the agency became public.
One battle has been won with his departure. But another battle brews with his
replacement: Andrew Wheeler, a former coal lobbyist Trump appointed acting head
of the EPA – and he promises to be every bit as bad as Pruitt when it comes to
protecting our environment.
