October 2: Facebook says estimated 10M people saw Russia-linked ads before, after election

The company turned 3,000 ads over to three congressional committees Monday as part of their investigations into Russian influence in the 2016 election. In a new company blog post, Facebook's Elliot Schrage said the ads appeared to focus on divisive social and political messages, including LGBT issues, immigration and gun rights. In many cases, the ads encouraged people to follow pages on those issues.

Fewer than half of the ads -- which ran between 2015 and 2017 -- were seen before the election, with 56 percent of them seen after the election. Some of the ads were paid for in Russian currency.

October 2: Hard Questions: Russian [Facebook] Ads Delivered to Congress ... By Elliot Schrage, Vice President of Policy and Communications
https://newsroom.fb.com/news/2017/10/hard-questions-russian-ads-delivered-to-congress/

October 2: In his post, Schrage wrote that most of the ads "appear to focus on divisive social and political messages across the ideological spectrum, touching on topics from LGBT matters to race issues to immigration to gun rights."

That description matches what CNN has already reported about the apparent goal of the Russian buyers: to amplify political discord in the United States and fuel an atmosphere of divisiveness and chaos, especially during the presidential election.

February 20: Russian bots sow social upheaval across US using Facebook, Twitter, experts say ... Russian bots aren't pro-Republican or pro-Democrat: they're simply anti-American.

While much of the attention has focused on the 2016 U.S. presidential election and the role played in it by the Internet Research Agency, one of the defendants named in the indictment, Russian social media bots also have been detected inserting discord into the Parkland, Fla., shooting debate on social media. Russian bots have reportedly been taking both sides in the debate.

March 17: How Trump Consultants Exploited the Facebook Data of Millions
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/17/us/politics/cambridge-analytica-trump-campaign.html

March 18: Facebook is reportedly investigating ties between one of its current employees and Cambridge Analytica, the data firm used by the Trump campaign that was recently suspended from the platform.

Facebook suspended Cambridge Analytica from the platform on Friday after reports it had not fully deleted data it obtained through the platform from University of Cambridge professor Aleksandr Kogan.

March 18: A New York professor filed a legal claim against Cambridge Analytica seeking information on what the data firm learned about him ...

The claim was filed the same day Cambridge Analytica was suspended from Facebook after reports it had not fully deleted data it obtained from Cambridge University professor Aleksandr Kogan.

The professor was found to have harvested more than 50 million Facebook profiles from his app, which required a Facebook login, despite only 270,000 having given permission for their data to be harvested, according to a New York Times report Saturday.

March 19: Facebook’s New Controversy Shows How Easily Online Political Ads Can Manipulate You

Reporting by the Observer, the Guardian and the New York Times in recent days has revealed that Cambridge Analytica — the social media monitoring firm that bragged it helped put Trump in the White House — had gained access before the election to the data of 50 million Facebook users through highly questionable means. Cambridge Analytica used to that data to create a tool of “psychological warfare” to manipulate American voters with targeted Facebook ads and social media campaigns.

April 10: On Tuesday senators on Capitol Hill grilled Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg about the company's handling of users' privacy in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal that exposed the data of 87 million users.

While privacy advocates were optimistic that this would result in real answers from the leader of one of the 21st century's most important technology companies, many of the questions asked by senators seemed to require an explanation of the basics.

June 4: Apple will attempt to frustrate tools used by Facebook to automatically track web users, within the next version of its iOS and Mac operating systems.

"We're shutting that down," declared Apple's software chief Craig Federighi, at the firm's developers conference.

He added that the web browser Safari would ask owners' permission before allowing the social network to monitor their activity.

June 5: Facebook and Google were paid millions for political advertising purposes in Washington but failed for years to publish related information — such as the advertiser’s address — as required by state law, alleges a lawsuit by the state’s attorney general.

Washington law requires that “political campaign and lobbying contributions and expenditures be fully disclosed to the public and that secrecy is to be avoided.”

Specifically, “documents and books of account” must be made available for public inspection during the campaign and for three years following; these must detail the candidate, name of advertiser, address, cost and method of payment and description services rendered.

The case likely will not result in significant monetary penalties for the companies in question; even if fines and damages totaled tens of millions it would be a drop in the bucket for the tech giants. But deliberately skirting laws governing political spending and public disclosure is rather a bad look for companies under especial scrutiny for systematic dishonesty — primarily Facebook.

June 4: ... The New York Times revealed that Facebook had deals with phone manufacturers including Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, and Blackberry going back a decade that gave the device makers access to copious amounts of personal data about users and their friends in order to re-create a mobile version of Facebook on their devices.

Facebook had deals with 60 companies, granting those firms access to information like users’ relationship status, religion, political leaning, events they planned to attend, and whether the user was online. What’s more, some deals let device makers override a user’s privacy setting. Smartphone manufacturers could obtain information about a user’s Facebook friends even if that user denied Facebook permission to share their information with third parties.

July 26: Facebook's sudden and stunning vulnerability threatens to undercut the foundation of the stock market rally since Donald Trump was elected president.

The social media giant has been the cornerstone of the FAANG trade — Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix and Google parent Alphabet. Just by itself, Facebook has gained more than 80 percent since Trump's November 2016 victory. The S&P 500 more broadly is up some 35 percent during the time period.

But a disappointing earnings report Wednesday, particularly regarding its growth forecast, had investors fleeing the company Thursday and pulling down tech stocks in general. Other market indexes were not impacted as strongly.

November 26: From Facebook to climate change: how to bury bad news

Have you smeared George Soros or need to release an awkward climate change report? There’s really no better moment

For government agencies and corporations with bad news they are reluctant to put out, there’s long been a tradition in public relations called the Friday news dump. In essence it’s a way of saying, OK, fine, we screwed up somehow, but let’s wait to admit to it until the last possible moment so fewer people will hear about it.

The problem is now that everyone is constantly connected to their phones, news travels further on a typical Friday evening than it used to. The Trump administration and Facebook needed another way to bury a couple of alarming stories last week. Enter the Thanksgiving news dump.

November 27: UK lawmaker hopes to publish secret Facebook documents within a week

The British lawmaker who seized a cache of confidential Facebook documents says he could make them public within a week.

Damian Collins, the chairman of a British parliamentary committee investigating disinformation, told reporters he would release the documents once they had been reviewed and stripped of personal data.

"I can't give you an exact date, but I would hope we would be in a position to publish them very soon," he said Tuesday. "Certainly within the next week or so, that would be my hope."

Facebook (FB) has fought for months to keep the documents private. They are part of a court case in California between Facebook and a small app developer.
