April 28: President Donald Trump, reflecting on a first
100 days in office that has featured
no major legislative wins and
low approval ratings, said Thursday he thought the job would be easier.
"I loved my previous life, I loved my previous life. I had so many things
going," Trump said in an
interview with Reuters. "I actually, this is more work than my previous
life. I thought it would be easier."
He later added, "I do miss my old life. This -- I like to work. But this is
actually more work."

November 7: This was an off-year election,
where the energy was focused in a grab bag of state and local races.
Much of that attention centered on the marquee gubernatorial races in Virginia
and New Jersey, as well as New York City's mayoral race, where incumbent Mayor
Bill de Blasio is expected to receive a second term.
But Tuesday also marked major decisions for voters in cities around the country
with fiercely fought mayoral races.

November 8: Philip D. Murphy [Democrat], who
grew up “middle class on a good day” in the Boston suburbs but found fortune on
Wall Street before turning to politics, defeated Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno on
Tuesday night to succeed Chris Christie as
the next governor of New Jersey.
“Tonight we declare the days of division are over. We will move forward
together. This is exactly who we are in New Jersey. We have each other’s backs.
To believe in each of us is to believe in all of us,” Murphy said after jumping
his way onto the stage to address supporters in Asbury Park's Convention Center.

November 7: New York Mayor Bill de Blasio
easily won a second term on Tuesday, the Associated Press has projected,
capitalizing on economic growth, low crime and a weakened Republican Party in a
race he turned into a referendum on progressive government.
The incumbent Democrat handily defeated Republican Nicole Malliotakis, a member
of the state assembly, and a smattering of independent and third-party
candidates. With 90 percent of precincts reporting, de Blasio had won 65.3
percent of the vote to 28.9 percent for Malliotakis.

November 7: Democrat Danica Roem, a former
journalist, defeated incumbent Republican candidate Del. Bob Marshall Tuesday to
become the first openly transgender elected official in Virginia.
Roem, 33, is now also set to make history as the first openly transgender person
to be elected and seated in a state legislature.
Marshall, 73, is a staunch social conservative who has served in Virginia's
House of Delegates since 1992. He once referred to himself as the state's "chief
homophobe" and introduced a "bathroom bill" earlier this year that would have
required people to use the restroom that matches the gender listed on their
birth certificate. The bill never made it out of a Republican-led committee.

November 7: DNC Chair
Tom Perez said Tuesday night's election results in Virginia were a "referendum
on American values."
"This is referendum on whether we're a nation that values healthcare for all, or
whether we’re a nation that says that healthcare is only a privilege for a few.
This is a nation where we celebrate our diversity, we feel it is our nation’s
greatest strength. When you have people like Donald Trump and Ed Gillespie and
Chris Christie and others who are constantly dividing us, the American people
are fed up with it."
"They want an America that we can be proud of," Perez said ...
The Democratic Party, he proclaimed, would be bringing those values "to every
zip code across North America."

November 17: Democrats Are Taking Advantage
of Mounting Women’s Anger ... They fueled Democratic victories in governor’s
races in New Jersey and Virginia. They defined the terms of debate in contests
to the bottom of local governments.

December 20: The balance of power in
Virginia’s legislature turned on a single vote in a recount Tuesday that flipped
a seat in the House of Delegates from Republican to Democratic, leaving control
of the lower chamber evenly split.
Of the 23,215 votes cast in the district on Election Day, Yancey held a lead of
just 10 votes going into Tuesday’s recount.
But five hours later, after a painstaking counting overseen by local elections
officials and the clerk of court, Yancey’s lead narrowed — and then reversed.
The final tally: 11,608 for Simonds to 11,607 for Yancey.

December 20: A three-judge panel declined to
certify the recount of a key House race today, saying that a questionable ballot
should be counted in favor of the Republican and tying a race that Democrats had
thought they had won by a single vote.
“The court declares there is no winner in this election,” said Newport News
Circuit Court Judge Bryant Sugg, after the judges deliberated for more than two
hours.
In the case of a tie in a House race, state law says the winner is chosen by lot
– essentially, a coin toss.
But it doesn’t end there. If the loser of the coin toss is unhappy with that
result, he or she can seek a second recount.

December 26: A lottery drawing to settle a
tied Virginia legislative race that could shift the statehouse balance of power
has been indefinitely postponed, state election officials said on Tuesday, after
the Democratic candidate mounted a legal fight.
The chairman of the Virginia Board of Elections, James Alcorn, said in a
statement that while holding a lottery would be in keeping with state law, such
a move should be considered “an action of last resort.” He added: “Any
substantive concerns regarding the election or recount should be resolved before
a random drawing is conducted.”

December 28: The Alabama
secretary of state said Thursday he will certify Democrat Doug Jones
as the winner of a Senate race
despite an 11th-hour lawsuit filed by Republican Roy Moore claiming that
election fraud affected the “outcome of the election.”
Jones defeated Moore ... by 22,000 votes in the Dec. 12 special election.

December 28: Alabama Secretary of State John
... Merrill stressed that any citizen can come forward to bring up allegations
of voter fraud that they've seen and that his office would adjudicate them.
"Any citizen has the opportunity to submit an allegation of voter fraud that
they've witnessed," Merrill said. "We'll investigate those."
Merrill said his office had received more than 100 reports of voter fraud and
had adjudicated more than 60. Merrill said one complaint claimed to be about a
town that doesn't exist, a report he dubbed "a flat-out lie."
