Crowd size matters, because if a person cannot tell the truth about small things, how can that person be expected to relate truth about the big stuff?

January 22: President Trump, spokesman say US media 'lied' over inauguration crowd size

Donald Trump and his chief spokesman launched an unprecedented assault on the media today on the US president's first full day in office, accusing reporters of downplaying the turnout at his inauguration.

In the process, they failed to acknowledge post-inauguration protests which drew millions around the world.

Trump, visiting the Central Intelligence Agency headquarters in nearby Langley, Virginia, insisted against all evidence that he drew 1.5 million people to his Friday swearing-in ceremony.

August 29: City of Phoenix spokeswoman Julie Watters tried to back up Trump’s claim of 15,000 [attending his rally speech], though she said there weren’t that many people in the venue. “There were more than 10,000 inside and there were approximately between 4,500 to 5,000 outside who were turned away because the event was wrapping up,” she said. Jon Hotchkiss of Be Less Stupid, who attended the event, estimated that the number of people who saw Trump speak was more like 4,000.

August 29: Trump punishes aide over Phoenix crowd size

As his surrogates warmed up the audience, the expanse of shiny concrete eventually filled in with cheering Trump fans. But it was too late for a longtime Trump aide, George Gigicos, the former White House director of advance who had organized the event as a contractor to the Republican National Committee. Trump later had his top security aide, Keith Schiller, inform Gigicos that he’d never manage a Trump rally again, according to three people familiar with the matter.

Gigicos, one of the four longest-serving political aides to the president, declined to comment.

December 10: Trump attacks reporter over already-deleted crowd size tweet

There is some irony to Trump criticizing someone for lying about crowd size.

President Donald Trump called for a Washington Post journalist to be fired Saturday over an erroneous tweet about the crowd size at one of his rallies. The reporter quickly apologized for the mix-up and had deleted the tweet, because that’s generally what you do when you make mistakes. Except when you’re Trump, who has throughout his tenure refused to back down from even the most obvious falsities.

December 28: Trump inflates 2016 Grand Rapids crowd size

More than a year later, President Donald Trump is still talking about winning Michigan, though his claim on a particular campaign crowd size misses the mark.

When Trump held a rally this month in Pensacola, Florida, he bragged he had more than 30,000 people at his 2016 election-eve rally in Grand Rapids at a DeVos Place hall.

“We went to Michigan, the night of the election. I got there, started speaking at 12:30 in the evening. It was already Election Day. We had 32,000 people there,” Trump said.

But the president’s estimate is about eight to 10 times more people than could have fit inside the west Michigan venue.

February 14: Trump's screaming fit at size of his inauguration crowd is revealed as Reince Priebus tells how he ordered proof it was bigger than Obama's

Trump started throwing out orders. 'Call [Interior Secretary] Ryan Zinke. Find out from the Park Service. Tell him to get a picture and do some research right away,' the president demanded, essentially telling Priebus to solve the problem.

Priebus tried to talk the president down, but ultimately decided it wasn't worth trying to fight him.

March 24: March For Our Lives crowd estimates trump Trump's inauguration

Facts don't lie. That's as true now as it was at Donald Trump's January 2017 inauguration

The estimated turnout at the March For Our Lives demonstration in Washington, D.C. falls at around 800,000. That data point comes from official connected to the demonstration's organizers, speaking to NBC.

Days after the inauguration, an expert in crowd science compared photos of Trump's with Barack Obama's and deduced that the former attracted roughly one-third the crowd of the latter. It's hard to be exact when dealing with such massive numbers of people, but with Obama's estimated inauguration attendance 1.8 million, Trump's total falls somewhere in the realm of 600,000.

We point this out only because Trump infamously made such a big deal out of his inauguration crowd. He sent his then-White House press secretary Sean Spicer out to proclaim that Trump's crowd "was the largest audience to witness an inauguration, period."

April 30: Trump Just Can’t Stop Lying About Crowd Size

While the rest of the “alt-right” was gathered at a Hilton in Washington, D.C., for the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, the president was busy stroking his ego by holding another rally for himself, this time in Michigan, and lying, again, about crowd size.

According to the Detroit Free Press, DeVos Place in downtown Grand Rapids, Mich., where Trump held the rally, has a capacity of 4,200. Unless each person was carrying two people, ain’t no way in Trump’s White House (the earthly version of hell) that there were 32,000 people in attendance [as Trump claimed].

May 19: Former President Jimmy Carter took a sly dig at President Donald Trump Saturday as he hyped the size of the crowd listening to his commencement speech at the Liberty University a year after Trump spoke at the school's graduation.

"This is a wonderful crowd," Carter mused. "It's even bigger -- and I hate to say this -- than it was last year."

Several in the crowd of graduates and parents chuckled and clapped.

May 19: BBC Three, the online television channel that targets younger audiences, trolled President Donald Trump just as the country was mesmerized watching the royal wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on Saturday. The BBC channel took to Twitter to share side-by-side photos showing the crowds outside Windsor Castle alongside the crowds at the National Mall on the day Trump was inaugurated.

BBC Three was not the only one to make the comparison. J.K. Rowling, who often tweets against Trump, also posted side-by-side photos with the words Love > Hate.

May 30: The New York Times has corrected a crowd size estimate it provided following President Trump's rally in Nashville, Tenn., on Tuesday night, after receiving sharp criticism from the president.

The paper on Wednesday stated that attendance was more than five times larger than estimates it had originally reported.

“While no exact figure is available, the fire marshal’s office estimated that approximately 5,500 people attended the rally, not about 1,000 people,” the correction stated.

October 23: Donald Trump Is Still Lying About His Crowd Sizes Almost 2 Years Into His Presidency

At a rally in Houston on Monday evening, the president boasted, without evidence, that there were 50,000 people were watching the event outside the arena. Contradicting Trump's account, Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo tweeted that there were only 3,000 people watching outside the Toyota Center

November 19: Fact Checker ... President Trump’s crowd-size estimates: Increasingly unbelievable

Trump has been inflating the size of his crowds since his early days as a candidate. His presidency began with a surreal national debate over how many people attended his inauguration.

And this year, at midterm campaign rallies across the country, the president’s crowd-size boasts became a big bugaboo for fact-checkers. There’s no question Trump can draw supporters by the thousands, but his pumped-up numbers are so extravagant most of the time that they have little or no basis in fact.

For example, Trump claimed 50,000 people were outside a rally in Houston because they couldn’t get in, but the city’s police chief said the number was much lower: 3,000. In Cleveland, Trump claimed “thousands” of people were outside because the venue was packed. But Twitter users at the event posted evidence that Trump didn’t fill the venue and that only a handful of people were milling around in the parking lot.
