July 31: Why is a Think Tank with Ties to
Russia treated as a pro-US
non-partisan entity?
The Center for the National
Interest is a think tank headquartered in D.C. with revenue of well over $1
million and over 20 full time staffers. Dubbing itself “America’s Voice for
Strategic Realism,” its
self-descriptor goes,
“The Center for the National Interest seeks to stimulate debate, promote
public understanding of U.S. foreign policy and international affairs, and
define principled yet pragmatic policies to advance America's national interest
in the complex world of the twenty-first century. “
Since 2011, the Center has hosted
over 81 C-SPAN programs, and claiming to be “non-partisan”, it is syndicated
on mainstream news platforms such as Yahoo! News and Google News under its
prolific magazine, the “National Interest”, prominent Republicans such as Grover
Norquist and Henry Kissinger sit on its board, it has hosted dinners featuring
Defense Secretary James Mattis and
Rand Paul, and it regularly hosts roundtable discussions of foreign policy
experts.
But is the Center for the National Interest really looking out for America’s
interests, or is it a backdoor for the Russian government into the heart of the
U.S. security establishment?

August 29: Republican Think Tank Asked
Accused Russian Spy to Help Advance Donor’s Financial Interests
The Center for the National Interest is one of the most pro-Russia conservative
think tanks in Washington. They hosted President Donald Trump's
foreign policy speech praising Russia in 2016, when he was still a
candidate.
But it turns out their closeness to Russia is greater than previously thought. A
new investigation by The Daily Beast
found disturbing interactions between the group's president, Dimitri Simes,
and accused Russian spy Maria Butina:

September 6: D.C. Wise Man Had Early Access
to Trump’s Pro-Russia Speech
Photos obtained by The Daily Beast show that controversial think tank chief
Dimitri Simes was closer than previously known to the speech’s drafting.
The pictures demonstrate that significant changes were made from the speech’s
detailed outline to its final version—including the removal of lines condemning
bigotry, praising legal immigration, and disparaging Russia.

February 15: Senate Panel Launches
Bipartisan Probe Into Think Tank Linked To Butina, Torshin
The Senate Finance Committee is launching a bipartisan investigation into how a
conservative think tank aided Maria Butina, the admitted Russian agent who
sought political influence through her ties with the National Rifle Association.
Butina
pleaded guilty to acting as a foreign agent in the United States in
December, and her alleged Russian government handler, Alexander Torshin, was
sanctioned by the U.S. in April 2018.
In a letter to Dimitri Simes, the CEO of the Center for the National Interest
think tank, the committee requested records related to meetings Torshin and
Butina had in 2015 with the Federal Reserve vice chairman and the Treasury
Department undersecretary for international affairs.
Republican Chairman Chuck Grassley of Iowa and Democratic ranking member Ron
Wyden of Oregon also sent letters to the Treasury Department and Federal Reserve
to find out more about these meetings and to receive more details about their
policies regarding meeting with foreign officials.

March 7: While investigating
Maria Butina for illegal foreign agent activities, the U.S. Federal Bureau of
Investigation reportedly explored her ties to Russian-American political expert
and Center for the National Interest president Dimitri Simes, who has co-hosted
a talk show on Russian state television since 2018. Two sources who know Simes
told the online project
Otkrytye Media (Open Media) that FBI agents previously questioned
them about Simes’s connections to Butina. After Butina’s arrest in July 2018,
federal agents reportedly visited the Center for the National Interest in
Washington, D.C.
The think tank’s lawyer, David Rivkin, told Otkrytye Media that the
FBI’s interest is part of a campaign “designed to destroy CNI’s reputation,”
saying that the federal agents did not meet with Simes.
