Trump’s Conflicts of Interest in Brazil The number of Trump’s
international business partners being investigated for corruption is
breathtaking and makes clear that the president may be more concerned with his
business liabilities in Brazil and other nations than with pressing foreign
policy concerns.

February 15: Why
the Trump Organization Was Cited in a Brazil Corruption Probe
It may have found itself managing a hotel backed by “shady” characters and
“possible corruption.”

June 1: What began as an investigation into
money laundering quickly turned into something much greater, uncovering a vast
and intricate web of political and corporate racketeering.
The investigation that led to [former executive of Brazil’s national oil
company, Petrobras, Nestor] Cerveró’s arrest – codenamed Lava Jato (Car
Wash) – was about to uncover an unprecedented web of corruption. At first, the
press described it as the biggest corruption scandal in the history of Brazil;
then, as other countries and foreign firms were dragged in, the world. The case
would go on to discover illegal payments of more than $5bn to company executives
and political parties, put billionaires in jail, drag a president into court and
cause irreparable damage to the finances and reputations of some of the world’s
biggest companies. It would also expose a culture of systemic graft in Brazilian
politics, and provoke a backlash from the establishment fierce enough to bring
down one government and leave another on the brink of collapse.

June 14: Trump’s Conflicts of Interest in
Brazil ... A growing corruption scandal ...
In 2012, Donald Trump Jr. traveled to Rio de Janeiro to
announce the development of
Trump Towers Rio, a five-tower office complex, in partnership with European
developer MRP International and Brazilian developer Even Construtora e
Incorporadora SA. However, construction has not started and the project is
reportedly on hold.
In 2013, Trump also
signed a deal with Brazilian developer
Paulo Figueiredo Filho, the former chief executive of Brazilian company LSH
Barra, to brand a hotel—again in Rio de Janeiro—that the Trump Organization
would manage. Filho—who is the grandson of João Baptista de Oliveira Figueiredo,
Brazil’s last ruling president during its 21-year military dictatorship that
lasted until 1985—left LSH Barra in March 2016, although he is still a
shareholder in the hotel. The beachfront hotel was meant to be completed in time
for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games but was only partially operational by the time
the games began.
In October 2016, Anselmo Henrique Cordeiro Lopes, a federal prosecutor in
Brazil,
opened a criminal inquiry that included both the Trump Towers Rio and Trump
Hotel Rio as part of a larger ongoing federal investigation into graft involving
Brazilian pension funds. Thus far, no charges have been filed and the Trump
Organization has said that it is not the target of the investigation.
According to prosecutors, ... “It is necessary to verify if the favoritism shown
by the pension funds towards LSH Barra Empreendimentos Imobiliáros SA and The
Trump Organization was due to illicit payments and bribes.”

April 8: Since 2014 Brazil has been gripped
by a scandal that started with a state-owned oil company and grew to encapsulate
people at the very top of business - and even presidents.
On the face of it, it is a straightforward corruption scandal - albeit one
involving millions of dollars in kickbacks and more than 80 politicians and
members of the business elite.
But as the tentacles of the investigation dubbed Operation Car Wash fanned out,
other scandals emerged.
It has led to some of those who have found themselves accused claiming they are
the victims of political plots, designed to bar them from office.

October 28: How Brazil’s Bolsonaro used
Trump tactics
Perhaps the biggest similarity and likely the one that initially gave rise to
the comparisons between Bolsonaro and Trump is that neither man appears to
measure his words. In the 2016 U.S. elections, Trump often billed himself as the
man who wasn’t afraid to say what everyone else was thinking. Bolsonaro shares
the same lack of filter. Some of the comments that have gotten him in trouble
reflect longstanding ideological positions, like his repeated praise for
Brazil’s 1964-1985 military dictatorship. Other comments may be more off the
cuff and a wink at his reputation for shunning the “politically correct,” like
when he told an audience that he had a daughter “in a moment of weakness” after
four sons. Both men “enjoy being outrageous and making statements for shock
value,” said Paulo Sotero, the director of the Brazil Institute at the Wilson
Center think tank in Washington.

December 3: President Donald Trump walked
off, leaving the Argentine president reaching out and alone on stage.
Mauricio Macri, who in the past was seen as Trump’s best friend in the region,
appeared to call out to Trump, who kept walking off the stage as the meeting of
the world’s top 20 economies came to a close.
It was a clear miscommunication during a photo opportunity between leaders, but
the uncomfortable moment seemed to symbolize an evolving mood in Argentina that
Trump is pulling away from the once-favored Argentine leader for a newer,
perhaps more attractive one from Brazil.

December 4: Brazil’s Trump: What the New
President Means for the Environment
... Donald Trump and Jair Bolsonaro ... share their distrust of climate change
science. In late November, President Bolsonaro made the sudden decision just two
months after winning the bid to host the COP25 conference in 2019 to
withdraw as the host. This
decision reinforces his campaign promise to
remove Brazil from the Paris Climate
Agreement and supports the fears of environmentalists around the
globe. Although Brazil’s exit from the Paris Agreement relies on a reversal of
the decision by its congress, these minor decisions and statements cement the
likely possibility of irreversible environmental damage.

January 1: Trump praises Brazil's new
President Bolsonaro after he vowed to 'strengthen democracy'
Right-wing nationalist Jair Bolsonaro was sworn in as Brazil's president on
Tuesday, and immediately called on Congress to combat endemic corruption and
promised to "work tirelessly so that Brazil reaches its destiny."
Addressing a joint session of Congress minutes after taking the oath of office,
Bolsonaro, a former Army captain and admirer of the country's 1964-1985 military
dictatorship, vowed to adhere to democratic norms.
He said his government would be guided by the promises he made to Brazilian
voters fed up with graft, high levels of violent crime and a still-sputtering
economy.

unlikely president
His enemies think he’s a far-right homophobe and misogynist who endorses

His supporters think his no-nonsense style will tackle corruption and a weak

The candidate floated above the crowds, carried on their shoulders.
Jair Bolsonaro had given a thumbs-up to the crowd - smiling at chants of “the

pain, he slowly slipped to the ground.
Bolsonaro had just been stabbed with a 20cm kitchen knife. A man called Adelio
Bispo de Oliveira was nearly lynched by the crowd. The suspect would reportedly
later tell police he had acted on “God’s command”.
