September: At 9:40 p.m., September 11, members of Ansar al-Sharia attacked the American diplomatic compound in Benghazi resulting in the deaths of U.S. Ambassador to Libya J. Christopher Stevens and U.S. Foreign Service Information Management Officer Sean Smith.[6][7] Stevens was the first U.S. ambassador killed in the line of duty since 1979.[8]

At around 4:00 a.m. on September 12, the group launched a mortar attack against a CIA annex approximately one-mile (1.6 km) away, killing CIA contractors Tyrone S. Woods and Glen Doherty[7][9][10] and wounding ten others. At the behest of the CIA, top U.S. officials initially described the attacks as the results of a spontaneous protest triggered by the recently released anti-Muslim video, Innocence of Muslims.[11] Subsequent investigations showed that the attack was premeditated – although rioters and looters not originally part of the group may have joined in after the attacks began.

There were demonstrations in Benghazi[139] and Tripoli[140] on September 12, condemning the violence and holding signs such as "Chris Stevens was a friend to all Libyans", "Benghazi is against terrorism", and other signs apologizing to Americans for the actions in their name and in the name of Muslims.

January 31: Witness Deaths Plague Probe Into Attack in Benghazi ... Since the September 11 terrorist attack, 15 Libyan witnesses who have been cooperating with Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) investigators have been murdered. The report lacked details on who was behind these killings and noted that it was unclear whether the killings were related to the probe.

April 28: Donald Trump says that “instead of taking charge” during the Benghazi attacks, then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton “decided to go home and sleep.” Clinton says she was continuously engaged in responding to the attack from the moment she learned of it in the afternoon and “did not sleep all night.”

Trump is certainly entitled to his opinion, but the evidence shows Clinton was fully engaged in the immediate response, and subsequent congressional investigations concluded the government response to the attack — including Clinton’s — was appropriate.

June 28: The House Benghazi Committee has released its findings on the Sept. 11, 2012, attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Libya.

The 800-page report found that despite President Obama and then Defense Secretary Leon Panetta's "clear orders," the military failed to immediately send a force to Benghazi and that nothing was en route to Libya at the time the last two Americans were killed — almost eight hours after the attacks began.

July 18: ... no official inquest into Benghazi — and there have been many — has found evidence that Clinton is personally responsible for the events of that night.

One of the biggest myths about Benghazi is that the US had military assets in range — but refused to deploy them.

Nine different bodies have investigated Benghazi ... Each has identified problems with the way the incident was handled, but none have uncovered real evidence of an administration cover-up or failure to properly respond to the attacks.

October 11: Trump Apparently Quotes Russian Propaganda To Slam Clinton On Benghazi ...

A riff by Donald Trump at a rally in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., on Monday night about Hillary Clinton's culpability in the deaths of the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans in Benghazi, Libya, is raising questions about where exactly Trump got his information and how.

The misconstrued "email" that Trump was reading had appeared in an article on a Russia-funded website called Sputnik, which has since taken it down.

You can see the original in a screen grab from The Washington Post.

September 27: Will Trump Pursue Clinton by Reopening the Benghazi File?

October 11: It’s been five years since terrorists attacked the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, on Sept. 11, 2012, leaving four Americans dead. Last week, as CIA officers disguised in wigs and mustaches testified in court about the predawn ambush on the diplomatic compound, four other American soldiers were killed in neighboring Niger.

Contrary to his focused commitment to reverse every policy put in place by his predecessor, President Donald Trump has decided to carry on with the construction of a second drone base in Niger commissioned by Barack Obama.

October 20: Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) on Thursday rejected any comparisons between the ambush in Niger that left four American soldiers dead and the 2012 terror attack on a U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, which killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three others.

"... every time I hear people compare this to Benghazi, it makes me physically sick,” he said.

October 20: Questions about whether further intelligence or military support could have prevented deaths at the Benghazi consulate attack were raised for years by Republicans after the 2012 attack.

[Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-Fla.)] said the [Niger] “circumstances are similar” with the attack on the Libya compound, and referred to Niger as "Mr. Trump’s Benghazi.” ... The men killed “didn’t have appropriate weapons where they were. They were told by intelligence there was no threat. They had trucks that were not armored trucks. They were particularly not protected.

October 22: After President Donald Trump repeatedly referred to her as a "wacky Congresswoman," Rep. Frederica Wilson fired back on Sunday morning ... "This [Niger] might wind up to be Mr. Trump's Benghazi," Wilson said on CNN's "New Day" on Wednesday. "He needs to investigate this very, very closely because I will be making sure that Congress does that."

October 30:  ... United States forces captured Mustafa al-Imam in Libya. Because of this successful operation, al-Imam will face justice in the United States for his alleged role in the September 11, 2012 attacks in Benghazi, which resulted in the deaths of Ambassador Christopher Stevens, Glen Doherty, Sean Smith, and Tyrone Woods—four brave Americans who were serving our country.

November 28: A federal jury has found a suspected Libyan militant not guilty of the most serious charges stemming from the 2012 Benghazi attacks that killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans.

Jurors on Tuesday convicted Ahmed Abu Khattala of terrorism-related charges but acquitted him of murder.
