July 24:
Jared Kushner gave a confusing explanation for his alleged 'back channel' plan
with Russia
President Donald Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner, denied
in a statement Monday that he suggested setting up a "back channel"
communication line to the Kremlin that would bypass US intelligence agencies and
persist after Trump was inaugurated.
But Kushner acknowledged in the statement, which came ahead of a closed-door
appearance before the Senate Intelligence Committee, that he asked Russia's
ambassador to the US in December whether the Trump transition team could use
Russia's embassy to communicate privately with Moscow about Syria.
Scott Olson, a recently retired FBI agent who ran counterintelligence operations
and spent more than 20 years at the bureau,
told Business Insider in May that it was not unusual for low-level staffers
to work between governments and bypass bureaucracy to exchange views and build
consensus in advance of higher-level negotiations.
But what Kushner appears to have done is "substantially different, in two ways,"
he said.

March 8:
U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller has evidence that a secret meeting in the
Seychelles just before U.S. President Donald Trump took office was an effort by
his campaign to establish a back channel with the Kremlin, The Washington Post
has reported.
The meeting in the Indian Ocean island nation in January 2017 was between Erik
Prince, a prominent U.S. military contractor who is the brother of Trump's
education secretary, and Kirill Dmitriyev, the head of a Russian
government-controlled wealth fund who is close to President Vladimir Putin, The
Washington Post reported late on March 7.
The Washington Post said that George Nader, a Lebanese-American businessman who
helped organize and attended the Seychelles meeting, has testified on the matter
before a grand jury gathering evidence about possible ties between the Trump
campaign and the Kremlin.
The Washington Post said Nader started cooperating with Mueller's investigation
as a witness in January.

August 19: Manafort Suspected of Serving as
‘Back Channel’ to Russia, DOJ Says
Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s interest in former
Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort stemmed in part from his suspected
role as a “back channel” between the campaign and Russians intent on meddling in
the election, a Justice Department lawyer told a judge.
The disclosure by U.S. prosecutors came Thursday during a hearing on whether
Mueller exceeded his authority in indicting Manafort on charges of laundering
millions of dollars while acting as an unregistered agent of the Ukrainian
government. Manafort’s lawyers say those alleged crimes have nothing to do with
Mueller’s central mission -- to determine whether anyone in the Trump campaign
had links to the Russian government.

December 20: Russia communicated with US
Treasury officials through Gmail backchannel during 2016 campaign
The Russian government reportedly communicated with U.S. Treasury Department
officials through a Gmail back channel as it attempted to gain financial
documents about its enemies in places such as America.
BuzzFeed News, citing documents,
reported that this correspondence arose during the final year of the Obama
administration. The news outlet notes that this communication occurred during a
time period when Moscow tried to interfere in the U.S. presidential election.
Agents from Russia asked Treasury officials for private financial documents on
at least 24 dissidents, academics, private investigators and American citizens,
according to BuzzFeed News.
