Undated:  Angella Reid served as the White House Chief Usher from October 2011, in the Obama Administration, until her dismissal in May 2017 from the Trump Administration. She was the first woman to hold this position.[1]

Reid was born in Saint Thomas Parish, Jamaica, and attended high school in Kingston, Jamaica, before emigrating to the United States.[2]

Prior to becoming White House Chief Usher, Reid amassed over 25 years of experience in hotel management with Ritz-Carlton, managing properties in Miami, Florida, Washington, D.C., and Arlington, Virginia.[1][3]

As White House Chief Usher, Reid was responsible for management of White House operations in collaboration with several organizations, including the White House Historical Association, the Committee for the Preservation of the White House, the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, the White House Curator, and the National Park Service.[4]

Reid was recognized at the 2012 Grio Awards.[5]

Reid was dismissed as chief usher in May 2017. The abrupt firing was unusual for a White House Chief Usher. The position is one which does not typically change with administrations.[1][6]

May 5: The White House has fired its chief usher, Angella Reid, the first woman and second African American to hold the position.

When the White House residence staff arrived at work Friday morning, they were told that Reid was no longer employed, according to someone with knowledge of the dismissal. A White House official confirmed that Reid is no longer working at the White House.

Reached by phone, Reid declined to comment, saying only, “I think it’s best if the White House explains.”

During Friday’s daily briefing with reporters, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the principal deputy White House press secretary, said that the deputy usher will serve as the acting usher.

“She is no longer employed here at the White House,” Sanders said when asked about Reid’s departure. “We left on very good terms and wish her the very best and certainly hope for great things for her in the future. However, it’s not uncommon you might have a transition of staff when a new administration comes in. It’s nothing more than that.”

May 5: One administration official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, cited “issues with the staff.” Others described tension between Reid, her staff and members of the administration.

May 6: In the Trump Era, Even the White House Usher Is a Possible Political Target

Why the Friday ousting of White House Chief Usher Angella Reid signals a sea change in executive branch decorum.

June 23: In the past, White House chief ushers have largely been public servants, military personnel or career staff members who worked their way up the usher ladder over several administrations. But in naming a new chief usher on Friday, Melania Trump elevated someone from within a close network of family employees to be her in-house right hand.

The White House said Friday that Mrs. Trump had chosen Timothy Harleth, the director of rooms at the Trump International Hotel in Washington, to manage about 90 ushers who are tasked with making sure life runs smoothly for the president’s family. If tradition holds, Mr. Harleth will serve as President Trump and Mrs. Trump’s confidant on all matters from planning family dinner menus to handling personnel issues. He would also manage the budget for the residence.
