February 20: Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has become Europe’s ultimate deal maker, by trying to keep his options open with the EU while not letting Russia take him for granted.

Lukashenko compared himself with the U.S. president, with whose authoritarian populist style he evidently feels an affinity. In one of the more Trumpian passages, Lukashenko mused, “Yes, [U.S. President Donald Trump] is inexperienced. Yes, he should be a bit calmer, but that’s just how it looks from here. . . . I went through all that myself, as a man who rose from outside the elite. But he has lots of clever people around him! Eighty percent of them are Jews, and you won’t say that they are stupid.”

August 19: Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has fired his Cabinet, emphasizing the need to strengthen the economy to preserve the nation's post-Soviet independence.

Lukashenko said he fired Prime Minister Andrei Kobyakov's Cabinet for failing to execute his orders and for paying too little attention to the country's social needs. He appointed banker Sergei Rumas to succeed Kobyakov.

Lukashenko has ruled Belarus with an iron hand for 24 years, maintaining rigid Soviet-style controls over economy and showing little tolerance for dissent or independent media.

He warned Saturday that Belarus will not turn into a "vassal" of its giant neighbor, Russia, even though he underlined the importance of close ties with Moscow.

August 27: Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said on Sunday that US President Donald Trump would gain more for the United States if he gave up his sharp language.

"I think if Trump abandons now this harsh rhetoric and his behavior, he would have much more to win for the United States," the president told the Belarus 1 broadcaster in an interview.

Lukashenko added that, naturally, many issues were hidden from the public, but "to wage wars against the whole world, including trade, [was] not the right way."

December 14: Russia offered to resolve economic disputes with Belarus if it agreed to deeper political integration, stoking suspicions of a Kremlin takeover, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said.

“I understand those hints: here’s your oil, but you must destroy your country and join Russia,” Lukashenko told a news conference with Russian journalists in Minsk on Friday, the Interfax news service reported. Some officials in Moscow “say directly” that they want to incorporate Belarus into Russia in return for financial assistance, he said.

January 10: A Diplomatic Breakthrough for Washington in Europe’s Last Dictatorship

Belarus lifts a cap on the number of U.S. diplomats allowed in the country as Minsk looks west and spars with Moscow.

Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei informed the U.S. State Department’s top diplomat on Europe, Wess Mitchell, of the decision in a phone call on Thursday, according to two diplomatic sources briefed on the matter.

The decision in part reverses a sharp decline in diplomatic relations between the United States and the authoritarian-style government in Belarus, dating back to the first years after the Cold War.

“It’s a big step. This is the beginning of a thaw,” said one U.S. official.
