Undated: Trump Tower wiretapping allegations

On March 4, 2017, U.S. President Donald Trump wrote a series of posts on his Twitter account that accused former President Barack Obama of wiretapping his phones at his Trump Tower office late in the 2016 presidential campaign. Trump called for a congressional investigation into the matter, and the Trump administration cited news reports to defend these accusations.

March 5:
Former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta on Sunday raised concerns about President Trump's claims that former President Barack Obama wiretapped Trump Tower before the election.
" ... When that happens, when he accuses a past president of wiretapping without any evidence of that being the case, it makes us vulnerable. It weakens the United States and it makes us vulnerable to our enemies. That's the danger."

March 6: The White House struggled to answer questions Monday about President Trump’s unsubstantiated assertion that President Obama illegally wiretapped him during the 2016 campaign.

March 6: Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) on Monday said President Trump “owes it to the American people” to explain his allegations that former President Barack Obama wiretapped Trump Tower.

"The American people need to know what evidence he has to make such a charge -- that’s a serious charge,” McCain said, as reported by NBC News.

March 10: A day after a secret FBI briefing, the leaders of the House Intelligence Committee told CNN Friday that they still have yet to see any evidence to back up President Donald Trump's stunning claims that the Obama administration spied on him.

March 12:
Rep. Devin Nunes, the GOP chairman of the committee, said that his panel has sent letters to "multiple agencies" to obtain records by next week ahead of the March 20 hearing. And he said that he still stands by his assertion from earlier this week that he has yet to see evidence confirming Trump's Saturday morning tweet that then-President Barack Obama ordered wiretaps to spy on him during the presidential campaign.

March 16:
The heads of the Senate Intelligence Committee have seen no evidence that the Obama administration “wiretapped” Trump Tower, according to a brief statement issued Thursday.

“Based on the information available to us, we see no indications that Trump Tower was the subject of surveillance by any element of the United States government either before or after Election Day 2016,” Sens. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) and Mark Warner (D-Va.) said in a joint statement, providing no other details.

Burr joins a steady drumbeat of Republicans who have explicitly contracted President Trump’s explosive claims that he was surveilled during the campaign.

FBI Director James Comey told the House Intelligence Committee Monday that he had "no information that supports those tweets" alleging that Obama wiretapped Trump, adding that the Department of Justice asked him to convey that it also does not have any supporting information.

The White House is standing by President Trump’s assertions that former President Obama ordered a wiretap of his phones, even as others -- Democrats and Republicans alike -- have said there is no proof.

May 1: [Trump's response to question about whether he still stood by his belief that Obama wiretapped Trump tower]: "I don't stand by anything. I just-- you can take it the way you want. I think our side's been proven very strongly [despite the fact that there is zero evidence to back up that claim]. And everybody's talking about it. And frankly it should be discussed. I think that is a very big surveillance of our citizens. I think it's a very big topic. And it's a topic that should be number one. And we should find out what the hell is going on." ... September 2:
Justice Department: No evidence Obama wiretapped Trump Tower

"Both FBI and NSD confirm that they have no records related to wiretaps as described by the March 4, 2017 tweets," the government said, referring to the Justice Department’s National Security Division.

September 19: Is Trump's 'Wiretap' Claim Vindicated?

The president’s defenders say reported surveillance of Paul Manafort justifies an accusation against Barack Obama, but they overstate the facts.

There were two major problems with the accusation. First, Trump offered no evidence to support them. Second, the system is set up to prevent politically motivated surveillance by requiring that judges sign off any surveillance warrant, meaning a president could not simply order a wiretap (or any other form of eavesdropping). Recent White Houses have made it a rule not to interfere with the Justice Department, though Trump himself has on occasion broken that barrier.

... the White House demanded that Congress investigate whether Obama ordered surveillance on Trump, yet refused to share what reasons it had for believing it had happened. Eventually, the provenance of Trump’s accusation began to emerge: Radio host Mark Levin had alleged surveillance; then a Breitbart story did the same, synthesizing already public information to make a speculative claim. Later, Fox News legal commentator Andrew Napolitano parroted it.

Pressed on his claim, Trump claimed, falsely, not to have rendered an opinion on whether Obama ordered him to be wiretapped, and said reporters should take it up with Napolitano, since it was his statement. Setting aside the fact that one expects the president of the United States to vet information before saying it, Fox News made clear that it viewed Napolitano’s charge as baselessly speculative by yanking him temporarily off the air.

February 12: No, Obama not facing indictment for spying on Trump

A fake news story on Facebook claims that while the liberal media "ridiculed" President Donald Trump over his claim that former President Barack Obama spied on him during the election, America has now learned that Obama did indeed spy and will be indicted.

The clickbait article declares at the conclusion: "Share this story if you want to see Obama behind bars for the rest of his treasonous life!"

There is no evidence that Obama himself ordered wiretapping to spy on Trump during the election and is now headed toward an indictment. Trump tweeted in 2017 that Obama had ordered surveillance on him. While there have been media reports about intelligence investigations into Trump’s associates’ possible Russia ties, there is no proof that Obama himself ordered wiretapping of Trump.
