Undated: Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Zelensky
(born 25 January 1978) is a Ukrainian politician, screenwriter, actor, comedian, and director who was elected President of Ukraine in the 2019 Ukrainian presidential election.

Prior to his political career, he obtained a degree in law and created a production company, Kvartal 95, which produces films, cartoons and TV comedy shows.[2] Kvartal 95 created a television series called Servant of the People, in which Zelensky played the role of President of Ukraine. The series aired from 2015 to 2019. A namesake political party bearing the same name as the television show was created in March 2018 by employees of Kvartal 95.[3][4]

Zelensky announced his candidacy on the eve of 31 December 2018, upstaging the New Year's Eve address of President Petro Poroshenko on 1+1 TV Channel.[5] Six months before Zelensky announced his candidacy, he was already one of the frontrunners in opinion polls for the election.[6][7][4] Zelensky won the election with 73.22% of the vote, defeating incumbent Petro Poroshenko.[8]

May 16: Before he was elected president of Ukraine last month, Volodymyr Zelensky played a president in a comedy show on television. The owner of that television station, Ihor Kolomoisky, returned on Thursday from self-imposed exile, raising fears that he may now ask the real president to return some favors.

Under the departing president, Petro O. Poroshenko, the Ukrainian government had nationalized a bank co-owned by Mr. Kolomoisky and accused him of siphoning off millions of dollars in fraudulent loans.

The Ukrainian government took over the bank, PrivatBank, in the course of a $5.6 billion bailout at a time when lending by the International Monetary Fund, the European Union and the United States was propping up the government.

While the bailout was seen as necessary, the extraordinary cost of what the Ukrainian central bank called Mr. Kolomoisky’s mismanagement became Exhibit A for Western governments in the risk of financially supporting Ukraine despite widespread corruption.
