July 12:
When Donald Trump Had a Choice, He Chose Nonunion Labor for His Construction Projects with IBEW

Donald Trump has admitted before that when he has a choice between union and nonunion labor for his construction projects, he'd go with nonunion labor. Just how often was that? A new report from the Electrical Workers (IBEW) reveals some figures about his dealings with IBEW contractors.

September 4: Donald Trump Is the Anti–Labor Day Candidate: Running Against Fair Wages, Worker Rights, and Unions

And the party’s platform is a litany of foolish dreams and ugly thoughts.

Donald Trump, the billionaire candidate who has argued that “having a low minimum wage is not a bad thing for this country” and complained in a 2015 GOP debate that wages are “too high,” is running for president this fall on the most virulently anti-worker and anti-union platform in the history of his Republican Party.

November 18: Clinton got union money, but Trump won many workers' hearts and minds

Increasing number of laborers favored Republican president-elect

Trump “used our rhetoric on trade and keeping jobs in America,” the AFL-CIO said, adding, “he forged a personal connection with working people by acknowledging their resentment about the rules being written to marginalize them.”

April 26: Trump Tax Plan Hurts Union Workers
https://medium.com/@mariocostanz/trump-tax-plan-hurts-union-workers-509e4cb7146c

May 24: The Myth of a Pro-Union Trump ... Following this budget proposal, there should be no lingering doubt about which side Trump is really on.

For many years, it had been assumed that the species known as the “pro-union Republican” had gone the way of the dinosaur or the dodo bird. For some, however, the 2016 election resurrected some Jurassic Park-like fantasies of its resurrection. Trump teased us with hints of it during the campaign—he was apparently anti-trade, he claimed he would bring back industries with high union density, like manufacturing and coal, and promised a “yuge” infrastructure-spending plan. Union members responded by coming out to vote for him in higher proportions than they have for any Republican presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan in 1984.

December 19: Donald Trump, Union Buster

The president’s appointees to the National Labor Relations Board have already incinerated Obama’s labor legacy.

The National Labor Relations Board is an independent agency tasked with “encouraging the practice and procedure of collective bargaining.” Under the Trump administration, however, it appears to have adopted a new mission: to incinerate every Obama-era rule as quickly as possible.

Winter edition:
Trump and the Labor Movement

A Look Beyond the Immediate Damage

We working people live in darkening times. When the Trump presidency ends in four years—if it does—we may no longer have an organized labor movement.

“We are at the beginning of the end of the U.S. labor movement based on a partnership with capital.” We are at the twilight of an era. Labor unions and collective bargaining stand to be swept away, and with them the institutions that have sheltered us in the workplace and provided us with a modicum of job security, living wages, health insurance, and pension benefits.

January 2: New Trump NLRB Delivers on Employer Promises

Board overturns Obama-Era decisions on micro-unions and joint employer status.

For most of the Obama era, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) pushed the legal envelope on every front in order to promote the interests of labor unions. Under President Trump, once the board finally attained a Republican majority—even if only for a few days—that battered envelope began to be repaired.

February 19: President Trump-appointed Neil Gorsuch holds the key vote in a case to be heard next week over whether public-sector unions should require people who don't want to be union members to pay for collective bargaining, the AP reports.

Why it matters:
Unions are major financial backers of Democratic candidates and causes across the country, and a rebuke from Gorsuch would deal a crushing blow to organized labor. Even though Trump overwhelmingly won support from white working-class voters, he had expressed support for the right-to-work movement. Per Politico, his administration sides with the plaintiff who's challenging the "fair-share fees." The Supreme Court had reached a 4-4 deadlock in 2016 on the issue following the death of Justice Antonin Scalia.

May 4: Democrats target union workers who regret Trump vote

May 23:
Planned Parenthood Is Asking Donald Trump’s Labor Board for Help Busting Its Colorado Union

Colorado Planned Parenthood
executives, with help from President Donald Trump’s labor board appointees, are fighting their health center workers’ unionization efforts in a case that could set a precedent for workers’ rights nationwide.

The case is Rocky Mountain Planned Parenthood Inc. v. SEIU.

Staff for Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, in coordination with SEIU Local 105, won the election for their union in December 2017. But shortly after the vote to unionize, Planned Parenthood leadership, instead of recognizing the new unit, turned to the Republican-controlled National Labor Relations Board to challenge the outcome.

May 29: In one fell swoop over the Memorial Day weekend, President Trump limited federal union representatives to no more than 25 percent of their time assisting colleagues with filing grievances, addressing sexual harassment claims, and resolving workplace problems. For a president who has been the object of numerous grievance complaints and sexual harassment claims, the hypocrisy of limiting time to pursue such claims is shocking.

June 1: 2nd federal union sues Trump administration over workforce executive orders

June 26: Trump ignored pleas from Harley-Davidson workers to save their jobs

Now he’s fuming at the company on Twitter.

In January Harley announced plans to close a plant in Kansas City, Missouri, and subsequently lay off some 800 workers there. It plans to shift the production to another plant in York, Pennsylvania, but the restructuring will still lead to a net loss of 350 American jobs.

Kansas City workers say they were caught completely off guard by the decision. They were further incensed by Harley’s decision to open a plant in Thailand and an announcement days after the plant-closure news that the Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based company would enact a stock buyback program worth some $700 million.

June 27: Supreme Court Deals Big Setback to Labor Unions

The Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that government workers can’t be forced to contribute to labor unions that represent them in collective bargaining, dealing a serious financial blow to organized labor.

The justices are scrapping a 41-year-old decision that had allowed states to require that public employees pay some fees to unions that represent them, even if the workers choose not to join.

Labor leaders fear that not only will workers who don’t belong to a union stop paying fees, but that some union members might decide to stop paying dues if they could in essence get the union’s representation for free.
