Sergey Viktorovich Lavrov
(born 21 March 1950) is a Russian diplomat
and politician. In office since 2004, he is the
Foreign Minister of Russia.[1]
Previously, he was the
Russian Representative to the UN, serving from 1994 to 2004.
Lavrov has likened the war of words between U.S. President
Donald
Trump and North Korean leader
Kim Jong-un
to a kindergarten fight between two children, saying "Together with China we'll
continue to strive for a reasonable approach and not an emotional one like when
children in a kindergarten start fighting and no-one can stop them."[18]
Lavrov also said that the United States would not carry out a strike on North
Korea because "they know for sure – rather than suspect – that it has atomic
bombs." He said the
U.S. attacked Iraq "solely because they had 100 percent information that
there were no weapons of mass destruction left there."[19]
Lavrov criticized
U.S. sanctions against countries like
Iran,
Turkey and
Russia. In August 2018, Lavrov said, "unilateral enforcement measures are
illegitimate in international affairs" [...]. "One way to counter these
illegitimate barriers and restrictions is we can use national currencies on our
bilateral trade". "I strongly believe that abuse of the role the U.S. dollar
plays as an international currency will eventually result in its role being
undermined".[20]

Putin offers transcript of Trump meeting with Lavrov
Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered to provide a transcript of a
controversial Oval Office meeting between President Donald Trump and Russian
Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, raising the stakes in an affair that has sent
the White House into a tailspin.
Speaking at a press conference in Sochi, Russia, Putin dismissed allegations
that Trump had shared top-secret security intelligence with Russian diplomats as
"political schizophrenia."
"If the US administration finds it necessary, we are ready to provide the record
of the conversation between Trump and Lavrov to the Senate and Congress," Putin
said.
The intervention by Putin could turn up the pressure on the White House to
provide its own transcript of the meeting. The Senate intelligence committee has
already
demanded a briefing on what was said at the meeting from members of the
Trump administration who were present.
Trump has admitted sharing security information on terrorism and aviation safety
with the Russians, saying he had the "absolute right" to do so, but the
White House has not confirmed or denied whether that information was classified.

Russia’s Lavrov Mocks Suggestion That Trump Worked for the Kremlin
“That’s stupid,” President Vladimir Putin’s foreign policy aide, Yuri Ushakov,
told reporters in Moscow on Wednesday. “How can the president of the United
States be an agent of another country? Just think about that.”
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also dismissed “accusations that President Trump
is effectively a Russian agent” at his annual press conference Wednesday in
Moscow, as he attacked Congress and the American media for undermining the U.S.
leader.
Trump said Monday that he
“never worked for Russia” after news reports that the FBI grew so concerned
by his actions toward Moscow that they quietly began a counterintelligence
investigation into whether he was working on its behalf.
Lavrov accused American media of “lowering their journalistic standards” in
coverage of the issue and denounced U.S. lawmakers for challenging Trump’s right
to conduct foreign policy. “This right is under attack from Congress and this
doesn’t make these attacks constitutional or less illegal.”

So far, both sides have failed to agree on another round of consultations.
"As before, we are still interested in restoring normal relations with the
United States and the European Union on the principles of equality and mutual
consideration of interests," Lavrov told a press conference Wednesday, according
to Russian news
agency TASS.

February 26:
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov says the United States has asked Moscow’s
advice in dealing with North Korea before a summit between President Donald
Trump and the North Korean leader.
Trump and Kim Jong Un are expected to meet on Wednesday and Thursday in
Vietnam’s capital. Their first meeting last summer ended without substantive
agreements on North Korea’s nuclear disarmament.
Lavrov, who is also visiting Vietnam this week, said in comments carried by
Russian news agencies on Monday that Russia believes that the U.S. ought to
offer Pyongyang “security guarantees” for the disarmament deal to succeed.
He also mentioned that “the U.S. is even asking our advice, our views on this or
that scenario of” how the summit in Hanoi could pan out.

What Russia wants from the Trump-Kim summit
The US is consulting Russia ahead of the summit, “asking our advice, our views
on this or that scenario,” Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov told Russian
state news organizations yesterday (Feb. 25). Lavrov is reportedly
recommending
that the US offer “security guarantees” to the North Korean leader to
encourage him to denuclearize and has even
flown to Vietnam this week as well.
