Trump
private security force ‘playing with fire’ ... The president-elect
continues to employ a battalion of retired cops and FBI agents to protect him
and clamp down on protesters.
Security officials warn that employing private security personnel heightens
risks for the president-elect and his team, as well as for protesters, dozens of
whom have alleged
racial profiling,
undue force or
aggression at the hands of Trump’s security, with at least 10 joining a trio
of lawsuits now pending against Trump, his campaign or its security.

August 21: The Secret Service can no longer
pay hundreds of agents it needs to carry out an expanded protective mission – in
large part due to the sheer size of President Trump's family and efforts
necessary to secure their multiple residences up and down the East Coast.
Secret Service Director Randolph "Tex" Alles, in an interview
with USA TODAY, said more than 1,000 agents have already hit the federally
mandated caps for salary and overtime allowances that were meant to last the
entire year.

August 24: ... while Donald Trump's
presidential travel is indeed one factor straining the agency, it is not the
only one. The problem is a confluence of issues: Statutory mandates that cap
salary and overtime, an increase in the number of protective assignments, and a
diminishing number of agents.
Until Congress and the Secret Service address these issues with rational
solutions, we will be hearing about the overtaxed agency into the next
presidential administration and beyond.

August 25: Presidents, their families, and
their staffs ... do need protection. But President Donald Trump has stretched
the limit of propriety when it comes to security spending ...
His administration has ordered the Secret Service to protect
35% more people than his predecessor’s did. This includes overseeing the
security of his sons as they make business trips all over the globe to improve
the Trump family’s bottom line. One example is Eric Trump’s trip in January to
Uruguay to promote the Punta del Esta Trump property. The taxpayer’s tab was
over
$100,000.
Another example is Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump’s recent skiing trip.

October 18: Beverly Hills Wants To Tear Down
Donald Trump's Wall. The Secret Service Is Hedging
The hedge surrounding Donald Trump’s Beverly Hills mansion is well over the
legally imposed limit and, in the eyes of the city, “a public nuisance.” In this
ritzy Los Angeles suburb, most hedges over 6 feet tall require a permit. But
Trump’s legal team has yet to provide the city with a letter from the Secret
Service explaining why the law shouldn’t apply to his property.

December 5:
House approves more overtime pay for Secret Service to protect Trump ...
Maximum salary plus overtime has been increased from $161,900 to $187,000.
The increase was voted on after Secret Service Director Randolph “Tex” Alles
warned during an August interview with USA Today that more than 1,000 agents
have already hit their annual federally mandated cap,
“The president has a large family, and our
responsibility is required in law,” Alles told the paper. “I can’t change that.
I have no flexibility.”

Donald Trump?

December 19: Trump
private security force ‘playing with fire’ ... The president-elect
continues to employ a battalion of retired cops and FBI agents to protect him
and clamp down on protesters.
President-elect Donald Trump has continued employing a private security and
intelligence team at his victory rallies, and he is expected to keep at least
some members of the team after he becomes president, according to people
familiar with the plans.
The arrangement represents a major break from tradition. All modern presidents
and presidents-elect have entrusted their personal security entirely to the
Secret Service, and their event security mostly to local law enforcement,
according to presidential security experts and Secret Service sources.
Security officials warn that employing private security personnel heightens
risks for the president-elect and his team, as well as for protesters, dozens of
whom have alleged
racial profiling,
undue force or
aggression at the hands of Trump’s security, with at least 10 joining a trio

January 17: New Secret Service Costs for
Trump at Mar-a-Lago Revealed ... And you thought your New Year’s Eve was pricey.
The Secret Service spent $26,457.28 to rent lights, generators, tables and tents
from companies near President Donald Trump’s Florida estate, signing contracts
that all ended early in the new year.
Trump’s 2017 travel costs topped $6 million for Mar-a-Lago alone, according to a
Wall Street Journal tally. That included just airfare, not the cost
of protection from the Secret Service, which
received congressional approval to raise its cap on overtime and salaries
after the first family’s travel schedule
drained the agency’s budget early.

agency reverted to its longstanding policy," according to the Government
Accountability Office report.

October 25: Secret
Service slams New York Times’ fictional Trump assassination story: ‘Outrageous
and an insult’
“While we understand this is a work of fiction, the insinuation that the U.S.
Secret Service would participate in the assassination of a President is
outrageous and an insult to the men and women of this agency.
The Times Book Review section published a series of short stories Tuesday that
dreamed up possible outcomes of the Robert Mueller probe and explored Trump’s
relationship with Russia.
One of the stories on the Times' online Book Review page -- to be published in
Sunday's print edition -- is titled, “How it Ends,” by Zoe Sharp – a chilling
story about a drunken Russian’s plot to murder the president with a Makarov
pistol. Sharp’s particular story doesn’t mention Trump by name, but it’s no
secret as the collection of stories is headlined, “Five novelists imagine
Trump’s next chapter.”
