March 3: Nearly a month into his tenure as secretary of state, Rex Tillerson is winning over foreign governments but alienating many employees at the agency he leads and raising questions about his ability to wield power in Washington.

"Change for the sake of change can be counterproductive, and that will never be my approach," he said. "But we cannot sustain ineffective traditions over optimal outcomes."

But even those rooting for Tillerson's success worry his business-minded approach of delegating important work leaves him ill-equipped to combat the power struggles common to Washington.

July 24: Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is growing increasingly frustrated with the Trump administration and could quit before the year is through, according to reports.

Two sources familiar with Tillerson’s conversations with friends told CNN over the weekend that he has grown so frustrated with President Donald Trump and his administration that there may soon be a “Rexit.”

The change in Tillerson’s tone followed a stressful week for the secretary of state. He was found to have violated U.S. sanctions against Russia while working as CEO of Exxon Mobil. Also, Trump publicly assailed one of Tillerson’s fellow Cabinet members, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, saying he regretted hiring him.

November 24: Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is attempting to undermine [Ivanka Trump's] biggest gig yet representing America on the world stage, declining to send a delegation of State Department high-rollers to support her.

“They won’t send someone senior because they don't want to bolster Ivanka,” an unnamed senior State Department official told the network, adding that “No one higher than the deputy assistant secretary is allowed to participate. The secretary and his top staff have insisted on approving all travel—even the most minute details.”

“Rex doesn’t like the fact that he’s supposed to be our nation’s top diplomat, and Jared and now Ivanka have stepped all over Rex Tillerson for a long time ...” ... “So now, he’s not sending senior people from the State Department to support this issue. He’s not supporting Ivanka Trump.”

December 11: A rising star at the State Department [Diplomat Elizabeth Shackelford] has written a blistering resignation letter to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, saying that under his leadership, the agency's influence has withered and morale among staff has plummeted, in part because of the "stinging disrespect" shown by the Trump administration.

"In these challenging global times, we should be seeking to conduct more diplomacy with more resources, not less," Shackelford wrote. She pointed to the absence of leadership at the top levels of the Department, saying it had been "gutted, leaving few empowered to make hard foreign policy decisions."

December 7: Tillerson commented on his time in the Trump administration during a rare public appearance in Houston Thursday night, according to reports in local media. He said he pushed back on the president's efforts to get him to do things that were against the law.

"So often, the president would say here's what I want to do and here's how I want to do it and I would have to say to him, 'Mr. President I understand what you want to do but you can't do it that way. It violates the law,'" Tillerson said.
