Jimmy Carter to Colbert: America “apparently” wants a jerk for president
Jimmy Carter capped a busy week -- even for him -- with a lively appearance on
Friday’s edition of “The Late Show” on CBS in which he both seemed to poke fun
at Donald Trump and made clear that he’s praying for the current president.
Carter, 93, was there in to talk about his
new book, “Faith: A Journey for All,” but host Stephen Colbert clearly had
other subjects on his mind as well.
“Were you too nice to be president?” Colbert jokingly demanded of the Nobel
Peace Prize winner. “Does America want kind of a jerk as president?”
Carter grinned.
“Apparently, from this recent election year,” he answered with a twinkle in his
eye. “I never knew it before.”

Jimmy Carter Pokes Fun at Trump During Liberty University Commencement
Former President
Jimmy Carter delivered the
commencement address at Liberty University on Saturday, urging graduates to
let “life, freedom and an opportunity to live a completely successful life”
guide them into their next chapter.
“Every one of us decides, ‘This is the kind of person I choose to be,’” Carter
told graduates of the Virginia school. “We’re the ones who decide, ‘Do I hate or
am I filled with love … do I think only about myself or do I care for others?’ …
There are no limits to our ambitions as human beings.”
The 39th president also worked in a
subtle jab at current President Donald Trump, after noting that the
record-setting graduating class of nearly 20,200 was even larger than the one
that heard Trump
deliver the school’s commencement address last year.
“I don’t know if President Trump would admit that,” Carter said, apparently
referring to the
much-disputed crowd size estimate from Trump’s inauguration.

Jimmy Carter: Talking about impeaching Donald Trump is 'wrong thing' for
Democrats to do
In reality, most Democrats have shied away from the controversial subject this
election year while special counsel
Robert Mueller continues his investigation of Russian interference in the
2016 election and possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin.
"You know, I think the president has much less influence over the economy than
is certainly publicized by the president himself," Carter said. "But whenever
the economy goes up, the president always wants to take credit for it. Whenever
the economy goes down, the president wants to avoid responsibility. And I think
it’s been that way in our country ever since we started."
Additionally, Carter criticized Trump for his reaction to the death of Sen. John
McCain, who died Saturday of brain cancer.
"I thought that President Trump made a mistake at first by not recognizing John
McCain’s unquestioned commitment to our country in the Navy and as a prisoner of
war and also in his service in Congress," said Carter, who, like McCain,
graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

September 13:
Former President Carter said this week that if he were “foolish enough to feel"
he could become president again, the first thing he’d do is change all of the
policies initiated by
President Trump since he's held office.
“If I were foolish enough to feel I could be president again, I think the first
thing I would do would be to change all of the policies that President Trump has
initiated,” the 93-year-old said while delivering remarks at Emory University on
Wednesday night,
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Ex-Presidents Send Trump a Pointed Message
Politics has never been an innocent profession. Every generation has witnessed
contentious arguments, division, scandals and below-the-belt attacks —
McCarthyism, the Vietnam War, Watergate, Iran-Contra, impeachment, the Iraq war
and the all-out fight over Obamacare.
But what was extraordinary about Thursday was having two ex-presidents — George
W. Bush and Barack Obama — deliver what amounted to a bipartisan, two-pronged
denunciation of the Trump Era. Neither Bush nor Obama mentioned by Trump by
name, but they also didn’t have to.

30: Former President George H.W. Bush Dies At 94
There were fears that after his wife, Barbara, died in April, Bush might die,
too. He
was admitted to the hospital with a blood infection on April 23, one day
after the funeral for the former first lady, and remained there for 13 days. He
also spent time in the hospital in
May and June, but lived to be the first former president to reach the age of
94.

December 3: Sully, the service dog of former
President George H.W. Bush, spent Sunday night lying before Bush's flag-draped
casket in Houston.
Jim McGrath, spokesman for the Bush family,
tweeted out a
photo on Sunday night, captioning it "mission complete."
Sully became the late president's service dog in June, a couple of months after
former first lady Barbara Bush died.
The yellow Lab was trained by America's VetDogs, which places service dogs and
guide dogs with veterans, active-duty service members and first responders.

No Chumminess Between Trump, Former Presidents at George Bush Funeral ...
Awkward handshakes, folded arms and a forward stare.
President Donald Trump joined the group of living ex-U.S. presidents on
Wednesday to commemorate the life of former President George H. W. Bush, but in
a service characterized by emotion and good feeling, warmth between the current
and former occupants of the White House was decidedly absent.
Trump shook hands awkwardly with his predecessor, Barack Obama, and former first
lady Michelle Obama as he took his place in the front row of the service at the
Washington National Cathedral.
He did not reach out to former President Bill Clinton or former Secretary of
State Hillary Clinton, who were seated next to the Obamas. Hillary Clinton, who
lost to Trump in the 2016 presidential election, nodded but did not smile as the
one-time New York businessman and his wife, Melania, joined the group that
included former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn.
Former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, a longtime friend of the late
Bush, spoke at the ceremony and said when he was president, "every single head
of government in the world knew that they were dealing with a gentleman, a
genuine leader, one who was distinguished, resolute and brave."

Pence Says Trump Thought Presidents on TV Were Talking Privately to Him
NBC’s Hallie Jackson asked Vice-President Mike Pence to name the former
presidents who had secretly told Trump to build the wall:
“I know the president has said that that was his impression from previous
presidents, previous administrations,” replied Pence. “I know I’ve seen clips of
previous presidents talking about the importance of border security.”
So rather than concede that Trump made up these private conversations, Pence is
saying Trump saw them say it on television, and imagined they had told him this
face-to-face. Is that actually better?
