Undated: The presidency of Donald Trump
began at noon
EST on January 20, 2017, when
Donald
Trump was
inaugurated as the
45th President of the United States, succeeding
Barack
Obama. A
Republican, Trump was a businessman and
reality television personality from
New
York City at the time of his
2016 presidential election victory over
Democratic nominee
Hillary Clinton. While Trump lost the
popular vote by nearly 3 million votes, he won the
Electoral College vote, 304 to 227,[1]
in a presidential contest targeted by
a Russian sabotage campaign. As of the end of his first year in office,
opinion polls have shown Trump to be the least popular president in the
history of modern American presidential opinion polling.[2]

September 13: Senior officials have
described the coming month as "brutal," “bad” or “really tough” because of the
confluence of complicated issues — but they also say it’s pivotal to getting the
presidency back on course. ... Their goal is to partially temper Trump’s
expectations, hammer out some compromises and get a competing band of aides on
the same page. The month has taken on outsize importance among some top aides
and outside advisers, who view it as key to getting the presidency on a better
track.

November 8: Trump holds an unprecedented
presidential power
- The president has a power no previous holder of the executive office wielded:
the ability to move markets with a tweet.
- On average, a negative tweet by the president caused an immediate short-term
negative 1.2 percent move in the targeted company's stock price, a CNBC analysis
finds.
- Similarly, a positive tweet by the president generated an immediate short-term
1.1 percent move higher.

January 9:
Donald Trump has reportedly told aides in the White House that he is willing to
stake his presidency on the wall. ... It has been 19 days since he started his
standoff over the $5.7 billion he is demanding to build his mythical wall across
the U.S./Mexico border, and there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight to the
hostage situation he has put the country in.
And there is a fear that he has given himself no way out, as the official also
said, “The president put himself in a box. The problem is there’s no endgame.
Right now the White House is at a seven on the panic scale. If this thing goes
on past the State of the Union they’re going to be at an 11.”
... His administration continues to crumble, with people either quitting or
getting fired all around him. Even Mick Mulvaney, whom Trump recently installed
as acting chief of staff is supposedly looking for a way out.

June 7: The Strangest Thing About Trump’s
Approach to Presidential Power
Many presidents have pushed the limits of their authority. But not like this.
... Past presidents have frequently tested the limits of their powers—and of the
Constitution—on national security, war powers, and push-pull interactions with
the legislature. But Trump seems to be pushing against the limits of his
presidential power almost entirely to protect himself. “He certainly uses
presidential power for personal purposes,” says
Julian Zelizer, a professor of history at Princeton. “That’s the place he
uses it more aggressively—to protect himself, to protect his inner circle.
That’s clearly where he’s most assertive.”

April 18:
Trump curses Mueller appointment: 'This is the end of my
presidency'
U.S. President Donald Trump believed the appointment of a special counsel to
take over the federal probe of Russian interference into the 2016 election would
spell the end of his presidency, according to the report by Special Counsel
Robert Mueller.
When then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions informed Trump of Mueller’s appointment
in May 2017, the report (page 78 Volume II) said, Trump slumped back in his
chair and said: “Oh my God. This is terrible. This is the end of my presidency.
I’m fucked.”
Trump then asked Sessions, whom he had berated for months for recusing himself
from the Russia probe: “How could you let this happen, Jeff?” and told Sessions
he had let him down.
