September 29: Donald Trump ...  has called himself an "ardent philanthropist." Unlike his son's foundation, though, the Donald J. Trump Foundation doesn't have much of a web presence. The foundation has been around since 1987, and according to the most recent tax filings available, gave around $913,000. In 2012, the foundation gave away around $1.7 million. Trump spreads his money around to a number of different outfits, but grants rarely exceed $100,000. It is possible that Trump does much of his giving outside of his formal charitable vehicle, and that more recent gifts—which we can't trackhave been larger, but the money coming out of the Donald J. Trump Foundation that we can see is modest compared to Trump's $4 billion net worth.

February 29: Where Did Trump's Foundation Donate Its Money? IRS Documents Reveal Surprising Answers

The Trump Foundation gave most of its money to traditional philanthropic causes, including the United Way, a handful of schools, and more than 10 museums. But he also appears to have given to a smattering of unconventional causes, including spirit teams at a Florida university, a political group supporting a state attorney general who was said to be considering an investigation into a Trump business, and a charity of a man who had reportedly sued one of Trump’s golf courses for not paying him a million-dollar prize after he hit a hole-in-one during a tournament.

January 23: Trump Effect: Six Ways Philanthropy Has Changed in the Past Year

Like George W. Bush before him, Barack Obama had a strong belief in the power of civil society to solve problems. Under both administrations, especially Obama's, there was engagement with nonprofits at the highest levels of government and partnerships with philanthropic leaders. That’s all gone out the window. Civil society doesn’t really seem to figure into Trumpism—a hybrid of populism and paleo-conservatism. In some cases, the tone toward the nonprofit sector has turned hostile, such as the growing attacks on higher education. The diminished influence of civil society was on display during the tax reform battle, with neither the administration nor top GOP leaders blocking a final bill that experts predict will decrease charitable giving by billions of dollars a year.

June 15: In the daily flood of claim and counter-claim about lawbreaking by President Trump and members of his Administration, on June 14 the New York State Attorney General filed suit against the state-chartered Donald J. Trump Foundation.  The complaint said the foundation engaged in “persistently illegal conduct” through “repeated and willful self-dealing transactions,” treating the charity as “little more than a checkbook” for Trump’s business interests, while “directors failed to meet basic fiduciary duties,” making the foundation “little more than an empty shell.”  (You can read the entire filing here.)

December 18: Trump Foundation To Dissolve Amid New York AG's Investigation

New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood has announced that the Trump Foundation will dissolve. The foundation was established by Donald Trump well before he ran for president.

The news comes as her office continues its investigation into various questions about the foundation's conduct, including whether the foundation broke the law by coordinating with Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and whether it was truly functioning as a charitable organization.
