Petro Oleksiyovych Poroshenko
(born 26 September 1965[8])
is the fifth and current
President of
Ukraine (excluding acting president
Oleksandr Turchynov), in office since 2014.[9]
He served as the
Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2009 to 2010, and as the
Minister of Trade and Economic Development in 2012. From 2007 until 2012,
Poroshenko headed the Council of
Ukraine's National Bank.
Outside government, Poroshenko has been a prominent
Ukrainian oligarch[10]
with a lucrative career in acquiring and building assets. His most recognized
brands are Roshen,
the large-scale confectionery company which has earned him the nickname of
'Chocolate King',[10]
and the TV channel
5 kanal, an all-news national TV broadcaster. Due to the scale of his
business holdings in the manufacturing, agriculture and financial sectors, his
political influence that included several stints at government prior to his
presidency, and ownership of an influential mass-media outlet, Poroshenko has
long been considered one of the prominent Ukrainian oligarchs even though not
the most influential among them.
He was
elected president on 25 May 2014, capturing more than 54% of the vote in the
first round, thereby winning outright and avoiding a run-off.

June 20:
Trump meets Ukraine president as Treasury Department
sanctions Russia
The Trump administration greeted his Ukrainian counterpart at the White House
with the announcement of a new set of sanctions on Russia –
though Ukraine President Petro Poroshenko took the opportunity to warn Trump
against future dealings with Moscow.
In brief comments to reporters about his meeting with President Petro Poroshenko,
Trump said the leaders had "some very, very good discussions" and that Ukraine
is "a place that we've all been very much involved in."
As Poroshenko arrived at the White House, the
Treasury Department said it is targeting 38 individuals and entities
"involved in the ongoing conflict" with Ukraine over the Russian occupation of
Crimea. Russia "annexed" the region of Ukraine in 2014, and has
backed pro-Russian separatists fighting in eastern Ukraine; the Treasury
sanctions list includes Ukrainian separatists and officials of the Russia
government.

May 24: Ukrainian President: BBC Report On
Secret Payment To Trump Lawyer 'Blatant Lie'
Ukraine's president has lashed out at a BBC report that asserted a secret
$400,000 payment was made to U.S. President Donald Trump's longtime lawyer last
year to set up talks between the two leaders.
Petro Poroshenko’s office issued a statement to RFE/RL on May 23, hours after
the BBC published a report saying the payment to the lawyer, Michael Cohen, was
arranged by intermediaries acting for Poroshenko who wanted to open a back
channel to Trump.
The BBC report cited unnamed sources in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv.

September 19: The
President of Ukraine is suing the BBC for libel over a news report that claimed
he had secretly paid at least £300,000 for a meeting with Donald Trump.
Lawyers for
President Petro Poroshenko said the allegation is untrue and “strikes at the
core of his personal dignity and integrity”.
The BBC story claimed that intermediaries acting for Mr Poroshenko made a secret
payment to
Michael Cohen, then Mr Trump’s personal lawyer, to set up talks between the
two leaders.
It alleged that, through official channels, Mr Poroshenko had been able to
secure only “an embarrassingly brief few minutes of small talk and a handshake”
with the US president, and that he wanted more.

February 22:
President of Ukraine praises way Trump handles Putin
“I think that this administration does an excellent, a great job. This is not an
assumption,” Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said on Fox News’ “America’s
Newsroom.” “I have a feeling that this U.S. administration clearly understands
the possible danger of Putin.”
Poroshenko spoke out against Putin’s hostilities toward his country and said
Putin’s only goal was to re-establish the glory of the “Russian Empire.”
“He wants to renew, to restore the Russian empire, the Soviet Union and he does
not have any red line for reaching these results,” Poroshenko told co-host Bill
Hemmer.
Wednesday marked five years since a popular uprising that resulted in a massacre
in which nearly 100 protesters died and many were wounded. The protesters were
supporting a trade agreement with the European Union that pro-Moscow president
Viktor Yanukovych refused to sign.
