Undated: On 20 October 1947, two months and
six days after Pakistan's
independence, the United States established relations with Pakistan, making
it amongst the first nations to establish relations with the new state. Pakistan
allied itself with the U.S. during the
Cold war era against the
Soviet
Union, and was an integral player in the
CENTO and
SEATO organizations.
Pakistan also played a crucial role in arranging the
1972 Nixon visit to China which led to normalization of ties between the two
countries.

September 23:
Trump calls for Indian intervention if Pakistan becomes
‘unstable’ ... “You have to get India involved.
India’s the check to Pakistan,” Trump said, during his appearance on a radio
talk show.

December 8: Donald Trump’s call for a
sweeping ban on Muslims entering the United States prompted howls of protest
around the world from national leaders to ordinary citizens – even provoking
calls for him to be banned from Britain.
In Pakistan, where San Bernardino massacre suspect Tashfeen Malik
had previously studied, one of the country’s most prominent human rights
lawyers, Asma Jahangir, called Trump’s speech absurd.
“This is the worst kind of bigotry mixed with ignorance. I would imagine that
someone who is hoping to become president of the US doesn’t want to compete with
an ignorant criminal-minded mullah of Pakistan who denounces people of other
religions ... Although we are not as advanced as the US, we have never elected
such people to power in Pakistan,” she said.
Tahir Ashrafi, the head of the Ulema Council, Pakistan’s biggest council of
Muslim clerics, said Trump’s comments promoted violence.
“If some Muslim leader says there is a war between Christians and Muslims, we
condemn him. So why should we not condemn an American if he says that?”

August 26: The U.S. relationship with
Pakistan has long been a transactional one marked by mutual mistrust, marriages
of convenience, and mood swings.
The long-standing U.S. frustration with Pakistan’s refusal to stop supporting
the Taliban, especially within the U.S. military and intelligence community, is
now overriding President Barack Obama’s administration’s desire to avoid renewed
military involvement in Afghanistan, as well as concerns that China could
capitalize on fraying ties between Washington and Islamabad, the U.S. officials
said.

December 1: Donald Trump's Call With
Pakistan Was a Hypocritical Mess ... In his phone call, Trump told Pakistan’s
prime minister that he had a “very good reputation,” He reportedly added: “You
are a terrific guy. You are doing amazing work which is visible in every way.”
But, under the rules of engagement under the emerging Trump doctrine, Pakistan’s
leader isn’t welcome in the U.S., along with any of the 1.5 million refugees in
that country.

January 28:
Trump left countries with high terror risk off his banned list
...
Trump signed an executive order on Friday temporarily blocking entry into the US
for immigrants and nonimmigrants from seven Muslim countries ... Leaving
Afghanistan — as well as high-risk Pakistan and Saudi Arabia — off the list may
prove shortsighted, however.

February 1: Trump's Muslim ban excludes
countries linked to his businesses
Not a single American was killed on U.S. soil by citizens from any of [the
banned] countries between 1975 and 2015, according to statistics tallied
by the
conservative-leaning Cato Institute.
Yet, people from [the three countries from which citizens who killed Americans
were from -- Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt] are still welcome
to apply for U.S. visas and travel permits.
In a striking parallel, Trump’s sprawling business empire — which he has refused
to rescind ownership of — holds multi-million dollar licensing and development
deals in all of those countries, raising potential conflict of interest concerns
and alarming questions over what actually went into the decision process behind
Friday’s executive [Muslim ban] order.

January 1: 'Nothing but lies and deceit':
Trump launches Twitter attack on Pakistan
US president tweets saying Pakistan is providing ‘safe haven to terrorists’ and
America was ‘foolish’ to give $33bn in aid

January 2: Pakistan was U.S. President
Donald Trump’s target of ire on January 1, as he threatened to stop financial
assistance to Islamabad. “The United States has foolishly given Pakistan more
than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us
nothing but lies & deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools. They give safe
haven to the terrorists we hunt in
Afghanistan, with little help. No more!,” the President said on
Twitter on Monday morning.
There was significant scaling down of U.S assistance to Pakistan in the later
years of the Obama administration. In 2014 it was $ 2177 million; in 2015, $
1604 million; in 2016, $ 1118 million and in 2017 $ 526 million. The U.S has
also made disbursement of Pentagon’s Coalition Support Funds (CSF) more
stringent. CSF is reimbursement to Pakistan for logistical and operational
support of U.S-led military operations.

Afghanistan'

light of President
Donald Trump’s tweet accusing the country of “lies and deceit”.
Ambassador David Hale met with Pakistani foreign office officials to explain the

Pakistan Has All the Leverage Over Trump ...
Why Islamabad isn’t worried about threats to cut off U.S. aid
Pakistan responded [to Trump's January 1 Tweet] as it has in the past for being
called out for its mendacity and perfidy: It rallied its trolls; it
summoned the U.S. ambassador in Islamabad for a démarche; and, in all forums
possible, it denied the allegations of nefarious deeds with all of the sincerity
and credibility of the wholesome human resources manager of the
Chicken Ranch.

January 4: The Trump administration will
suspend most security assistance to Pakistan, the State Department said on
Thursday, expanding its retribution over militant safe havens that U.S.
officials blame for ongoing violence in Afghanistan.
State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert, speaking to reporters, said the
suspension would allow the administration, which will freeze the aid payments
but not allocate the money elsewhere, to reassess in the coming year.

September 4: The Trump administration just
announced it has cut $300 million in military aid to Pakistan, increasing
pressure on the country to crack down on militant groups that have complicated
the ongoing US war in Afghanistan.
The
Pentagon noted the decrease in military financial assistance to its South
Asian ally in a Saturday statement, although the move had been planned since
January. Still, it means the Trump administration has now withheld around
$800 million in aid to Pakistan this year — and it’s possible more cuts will
happen, if Islamabad doesn’t start doing what Washington wants.

November 19: Pakistan reacted angrily on
Monday to criticism by President Trump that the country had not done enough in
return for years of United States military aid and that the government had
harbored Osama bin Laden, the leader of Al Qaeda.
Mr. Khan, a populist politician who was
elected in July, is a longtime critic of United States policy toward
Pakistan, railing against the American use of drones to target militants in the
country’s tribal regions. He has accused the Pakistani military of kowtowing to
the United States in the past.
Despite his criticism, Mr. Khan says that he is not anti-American and stresses
that he wants the relationship between the two countries to be based on mutual
respect.

December 3: Trump requests Pakistan's help
on Afghan peace after Twitter tirade
US President Donald Trump sent a letter to Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan
requesting his country's help to end the nearly two-decades long conflict in
Afghanistan, just weeks after engaging in a Twitter spat with the Pakistani
leader.
Trump's request follows a month of often harsh presidential language about
Pakistan. Trump complained to Fox News in November that Islamabad doesn't do "a
damn thing" for the US and charged that its government had helped Osama bin
Laden hide. Later that month, he took to Twitter in an extended diatribe,
assailing Pakistan for doing "nothing for us."
Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs seemed receptive to the US President's
overture, saying in a statement, "since Pakistan has always advocated a
political settlement to end war in Afghanistan, US decision is welcomed.
Pakistan reiterates its commitment to play a facilitation role in good faith.
Peace and stability in Afghanistan remains a shared responsibility."
