Donald Trump, who claims to be the “best on the military” among the 2016
Presidential candidates because he is
the best at everything, apparently has no idea what
the nuclear triad is. The revelation came during last night’s
Presidential Debate when conservative talk radio host Hugh Hewitt asked
Trump a question about the need to modernize our nuclear forces.
Most people probably don’t know about the ongoing need to upgrade each leg of
our aging nuclear arsenal.

August 10: Trump Misfires on Nuclear Weapons
Boast
A day after he threatened North Korea with “fire and fury,” President Donald
Trump distorted the facts when he boasted that his “first order as President was
to renovate and modernize our nuclear arsenal” and “it is now far stronger and
more powerful than ever.”
It’s true that Trump
directed his secretary of defense to initiate a Nuclear Posture Review. But
that review was not his “first order”; it was not unexpected; and it won’t be
done until
the end of the year, so it has yet to result in any improvements.
All U.S. presidents since Bill Clinton have undertaken Nuclear Posture Reviews,
or NPRs, at the
beginning of their administrations.
The Obama administration’s review, which was completed in April 2010,
resulted in a
$400 billion modernization plan that includes new nuclear submarines,
intercontinental ballistic missiles and Air Force bombers.
“The renovation and modernization of the arsenal that is going on now is all the
result of decisions that were made by the Obama administration,”
Hans M. Kristensen,
director of the Nuclear Information Project at the Federation of American
Scientists, told us. “The Trump administration NPR might decide to adjust or
increase capabilities but that is yet unclear.”

Could Be Dangerous, Warns Experts ... Arms control advocates are denouncing the
Trump Administration’s draft Nuclear Posture Review (NPR), which calls for
lowering the U.S. nuclear threshold and developing new classes of nuclear
weapons.
“At the Arms Control Association, our take is that the NPR constitutes
unnecessary, unexecutable and unsafe overreach,” Kingston Reif, director for
disarmament and threat reduction policy at the Arms Control Association said
during a Jan. 23 press conference.
“Imagine, if you dare … imagine him in the Oval Office facing a real crisis,”
Hillary Clinton said
in her speech to the Democratic National Convention in 2016, referring to her
then-Republican opponent, Donald J. Trump. “A man you can bait with a tweet is

President Donald Trump said his administration is going to build a nuclear
arsenal “like you’ve never seen before,” as part of a military buildup provided
for under the newly released fiscal year 2019 budget proposal.

But there were worries, especially in Tokyo and Seoul, which both have huge US
military presences, about Trump agreeing to halt US military exercises with
South Korea, which the North has long claimed were invasion preparations. That
concession to Kim appeared to catch the Pentagon and officials in Seoul off
guard, and some South Koreans were alarmed.
Trump’s claim that North Korea no longer poses a nuclear threat is questionable.
North Korea is believed to possess more than 50 nuclear warheads, with its
atomic program spread across more than 100 sites constructed over decades to
evade international inspections. Trump insisted that strong verification of
denuclearization would be included in a final agreement, saying it was a detail
his team would begin sorting out with the North Koreans next week.

President of the United States is erratic, illiterate, and doesn’t want to
know what he doesn’t know. The President has alienated former allies, befriended
or courted murderous dictators, and has repeatedly brought the country to the
brink of nuclear confrontation. The President lies constantly, knows that he is
lying, and demands that Administration officials lie for him, and often they do.
The President has waged war on the institutions of government, overseeing the
gutting of the State Department and the destruction of other federal agencies by
their own leaders, and effectively shut off media access to the Pentagon, the
State Department, and the White House. The President has acted to thwart
oversight of the Administration by other branches of government. The President
has never made a secret of despising the government itself: he has called it a
“swamp” and gleefully shut it down for thirty-five days, during a temper
tantrum. The President has not only failed to divest himself of his businesses
but has installed his children in and near the White House, openly using his
office for personal financial gain. The President has debased political culture
and language, using his bully pulpit to spew lies, hate, and personal insults
