The National Rifle Association of America (NRA) is an
American
nonprofit organization that advocates for
gun rights.[4][5][6]
Founded in 1871, the group has informed its members about firearm-related
legislation since 1934, and it has directly
lobbied for and against firearms legislation since 1975.[7]
The NRA has been criticized by
gun
control and gun rights advocacy groups, political commentators, and
politicians.[13][14]
The organization has been the focus of intense criticism in the aftermath of
high-profile shootings, such as the
Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting and the
Stoneman Douglas High School shooting.

May 6: Trump angers France and Britain with his
NRA speech
US President Donald Trump took aim at two of America's closest allies in a
speech at the NRA convention, saying strict gun laws failed to prevent the 2015
terrorist attacks in Paris and highlighting a purported increase in knife
violence in London. ... The comments provoked anger in both France and Britain.
... France was especially incensed after Trump, while speaking at the gun rights
convention in Dallas on Friday, pointed his hand as if it were a gun while
describing how each of the victims in Paris was fatally shot.
"They took their time and gunned them down one by one -- boom, come over here,
boom, come over here, boom," he said.

May 12: Researchers Tackle Gun Violence
Despite Lack of Federal Funding
In charting a course forward, it is necessary to move beyond "people's anecdotal
opinions," says David Hemenway, director of the Harvard Injury Control Research
Center. He and other researchers are analyzing data and conducting studies with
the ultimate goal of informing public policy. It's a tough task, in part because
of a by now
well-known piece of legislation called the Dickey Amendment, passed by
Congress in 1996 with the support of the National Rifle Association. This
amendment prevented the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from using
funds "to advocate or promote gun control." It didn't ban federally-funded gun
research, but the legislation had a chilling effect: from 1996 to 2013, CDC
funding in this area dropped by 96 percent.

U.S. officials charge NRA-linked Russian with acting as Kremlin

Federal authorities on Monday charged a Russian
citizen living in Washington, D.C. with conspiracy to act as an illegal agent of
the Russian government, including attempting to establish "back-channel"
relationships with U.S. officials on behalf of the Kremlin, the Justice
Department said.
Mariia Butina, 29, was arrested Sunday in connection with what an FBI agent
described in court documents as a "Russian influence operation." She made her
initial appearance Monday afternoon before U.S. Magistrate Judge Deborah
Robinson in Washington and was ordered to be held pending a hearing set for
Wednesday.
... The NRA did not respond to requests for comment.

11: A mocking tweet from the National Rifle Association has stirred
many physicians to post on social media about their tragically frequent
experiences treating patients in the aftermath of gun violence.
"Someone should tell self-important anti-gun doctors to stay in their lane," the
NRA tweeted on
Thursday. "Half of the articles in Annals of Internal Medicine are pushing for
gun control. Most upsetting, however, the medical community seems to have
consulted NO ONE but themselves."
"We are not anti-gun: we are anti-bullet holes in our patients," Esther Choo, a
doctor and professor of emergency medicine at Oregon Health & Science
University,
replied on Twitter. "Most upsetting, actually, is death and disability from
gun violence that is unparalleled in the world."

28: A Trauma Surgeon Who Survived Gun Violence Is Taking On The NRA
For trauma surgeon Joseph Sakran, gun violence is a very personal issue. He has
treated hundreds of gun wound victims, comforted anxious loved ones and told
mothers and fathers that their children would not be coming home.
But Sakran's empathy for his patients and their families extends beyond the
hospital. Sakran knows the pain of gun violence because he is a survivor of it;
when he was 17, he took a bullet to the throat after a high school football
game.
Maybe that's why he felt the need to do something when the NRA
tweeted on Nov.
7, "Someone should tell self-important anti-gun doctors to stay in their lane,"
in response to the American College of Physicians'
position paper on reducing firearm injuries and deaths.

Russian spy Maria Butina have long history as foreign agents lobbying together
Alleged Russian spy Maria Butina has changed her

As her attorneys were negotiating the plea deal, her partner, GOP operative Paul
Erickson, lawyered up in light of reports swirling that he too may be targeted

April 30:
As
gun violence erupted across the country over the weekend, the nation's
foremost gun lobby struggled with one of its biggest crises in decades.
The bitter leadership battle -- centered on the finances and management of the
National Rifle Association -- comes as the political landscape on guns undergoes
dramatic change: Gun safety groups are growing more powerful and mounting more
forceful challenges to the NRA. And public attitudes are shifting amid a grim
and growing succession of mass shootings.
... Oliver North stepped away from the NRA's presidency as part of a power
struggle with longtime CEO Wayne LaPierre ...
