Nimrata "Nikki"
Haley (née Randhawa, January 20, 1972)[1][2][3]
is an American politician who served as
United States Ambassador to the United Nations from 2017 to 2018.[4]
A member of the
Republican Party, she previously served as the
116th
Governor of South Carolina from 2011 to 2017 and is a former member of the
South Carolina House of Representatives.[3]
Haley was the first female governor of South Carolina, and the second
Indian-American (after
Bobby
Jindal) to serve as a governor in the United States.
On November 23, 2016, President-elect
Donald
Trump nominated Haley for the position of
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Haley accepted the nomination,[7]
was confirmed by the
U.S. Senate in a 96–4 vote, and was subsequently sworn in on January 25,
2017.[8]
As U.N. Ambassador, Haley affirmed the United States' willingness to use
military force in response to further
North Korean missile tests in the wake of the
2017 North Korea crisis. Haley's tenure as Ambassador was noted for its high
degree of visibility.[9]
On October 9, 2018, Haley announced that she was resigning her position as
Ambassador effective at the end of 2018.[10][11]

November 23: South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley
tapped as US envoy to UN
The choice of Haley, 44, the first U.S. governor to sign anti-BDS legislation,
was announced Wednesday by Trump’s transition team. Haley is the first woman
appointed to a post in the Trump administration. She will replace current envoy
Samantha Power.
Haley has little foreign policy experience and has never served in federal
office. Prior to running for governor, she served three terms in the South
Carolina House of Representatives.
She was born in South Carolina to Sikh parents who emigrated from India to
Canada and later to the United States. She began identifying as a Methodist
after she married her husband, Michael Haley.
“Governor Haley has a proven track record of bringing people together regardless
of background or party affiliation to move critical policies forward for the
betterment of her state and our country,” Trump said in a statement on
Wednesday. “She is also a proven dealmaker, and we look to be making plenty of
deals. She will be a great leader representing us on the world stage.”

Nikki Haley Says World Leaders Laughed With Trump, Not at Him
Yesterday, Donald Trump addressed the United Nations General Assembly and told
them that his administration “has accomplished more than almost any
administration in the history of our country.” And the audience …
laughed right in his face. A lot.

October 9:
Back in 2016, rumors that Nikki Haley was lined up to be US secretary of State
or UN ambassador were
met with derision from analysts and UN insiders. The then-South Carolina
governor had almost no experience outside her home state, let alone
internationally.
But Donald Trump appointed Haley to the UN anyway. After two years, she will
leave her post at the end of 2018, she announced this morning. And today,
the feeling at the UN is that Haley was “about as good as it can get under
Trump,” says Richard Gowan, a senior fellow at the United Nations University.
