Undated: The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), also called the North Atlantic Alliance, is an intergovernmental military alliance between 29 North American and European countries. The organization implements the North Atlantic Treaty that was signed on 4 April 1949.[3][4] NATO constitutes a system of collective defence whereby its independent member states agree to mutual defence in response to an attack by any external party. NATO’s Headquarters are located in Haren, Brussels, Belgium, while the headquarters of Allied Command Operations is near Mons, Belgium.

April 12: Trump said, "I had previously said that NATO was obsolete because it failed to deal adequately with terrorism. Since my comments, they have changed their policy and now have a new division focused on terror threats.".  ... Trump strongly implies that NATO acted because of his concerns. ... But experts agree that nothing of the sort happened. NATO involvement in counter-terrorism issued its first formal declaration on terrorism in 1980, and it became a significant issue for the alliance on Sept. 11, 2001, said Lisa Sawyer Samp, a senior fellow in the international security program of the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

May 15: NATO Frantically Tries to Trump-Proof President’s First Visitz

A ‘freaked-out’ NATO braces for Donald Trump’s first meeting of the transatlantic alliance.

NATO is scrambling to tailor its upcoming meeting to avoid taxing President Donald Trump’s notoriously short attention span. The alliance is telling heads of state to limit talks to two to four minutes at a time during the discussion, several sources inside NATO and former senior U.S. officials tell Foreign Policy. And the alliance scrapped plans to publish the traditional full post-meeting statement meant to crystallize NATO’s latest strategic stance.

May 23: Public support for the North Atlantic Treaty Alliance has generally improved in the U.S., Europe and Canada, according to a newly released poll from the Pew Research Center. ... after an April meeting with NATO's Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, Trump declared: "I said it [NATO] was obsolete. It's no longer obsolete."

July 3: Donald Trump attacks NATO allies and threatens Angela Merkel

Nato members committed to spend 2 percent of their gross domestic product on national defence at a 2014 summit in Wales, and Trump has repeatedly lambasted Nato allies for not fulfilling the commitment.

July 11: President Donald Trump on Wednesday demanded that America's NATO allies raise their domestic defense spending levels to 2 percent "immediately" instead of by 2024, as NATO had previously agreed.

July 12: President Donald Trump capped off his two-day visit at NATO headquarters on Thursday by boldly declaring that all NATO members agreed to increase their defense spending after he told them he was “extremely unhappy.”

July 12: Trump’s False Claims at NATO

[Among other false statements] NATO countries did increase defense spending in 2015 and 2016, but Trump falsely claimed that “prior to last year” their defense spending went down “very substantially.”

July 18: Just a week after rattling NATO countries in Europe, President Donald Trump once again put America’s commitment to the alliance in doubt on Tuesday night.

July 18:
Why President Trump's Comments About Montenegro Were a Win for Vladimir Putin

Trump’s skepticism towards [NATO] Article 5 aligns with his distrust of multinational organizations in general, from the United Nations to the World Trade Organization. But NATO, first formed to counter potential Soviet aggression in Europe, is seen by many as a check on Russian ambitions in Eastern Europe under a leader who has demonstrated a willingness to annex territory through military might. And Montenegro, a small Balkan nation southwest of Serbia, is considered particularly vulnerable.

July 19:
On Tuesday evening, in an interview on Fox News, Trump used Montenegro to take a swipe at NATO.

When anchor Tucker Carlson asked why the U.S. should send troops to defend a small country such as Montenegro if it were attacked, Trump replied: “I understand what you’re saying, I’ve asked the same question. Montenegro is a tiny country with very strong people. They are very aggressive people, they may get aggressive, and congratulations, you’re in World War III. But that’s the way it [NATO] was set up.”

July 19: The country of Montenegro is not happy about being called “aggressive” by President Donald Trump.

On Thursday, it clapped back.

Montenegro released an official statement making clear that it is a peace-loving country that also can defend itself and that it is not, as Trump had suggested in an interview on Tuesday, about to start World War III.

July 26: Why Eastern European countries aren’t attacking Trump over NATO

They’re on the front lines of Russian aggression. But Eastern Europe’s leaders won’t openly criticize Trump over NATO and Putin.

For countries that were under Moscow’s sway for decades after World War II and continue to face pressure from their huge eastern neighbor, putting a rubber stamp on Trump’s coziness to Putin might seem paradoxical, even shocking.

The legislation also gives the Senate Legal Counsel the ability to take the administration to court if it attempts to withdraw from the military alliance without the Senate's say-so.

July 27: Trump Seeks to Revive 'Arab NATO' to Confront Iran
https://www.usnews.com/news/world/articles/2018-07-27/trump-seeks-to-revive-arab-nato-to-confront-iran

July 27: One of Donald Trump’s favorite talking points is that our NATO allies have been “delinquent” in their financial commitments. That’s always been wrong – it reflects fundamental confusion about how the alliance works – and Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) pressed Secretary of State Mike Pompeo about this on Wednesday.

“That’s a misnomer, is it not?” Corker asked, referring to the president’s rhetoric. Pompeo conceded, “That’s correct.”

It was a memorable moment: the Republican chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the president’s secretary of State agreed publicly that a frequent Trump claim about NATO is just wrong.
