Undated: The Ku Klux Klan, commonly called the KKK or simply the Klan and commonly misspelled as the Klu Klux Klan, refers to three distinct secret movements at different points in time in the history of the United States. Each has advocated extremist reactionary positions such as white supremacy, white nationalism, anti-immigration and—especially in later iterations—Nordicism[7][8] and anti-Catholicism. Historically, the KKK used terrorism—both physical assault and murder—against groups or individuals whom they opposed.[9] All three movements have called for the "purification" of American society and all are considered right-wing extremist organizations.[10][11][12][13] In each era, membership was secret and estimates of the total were highly exaggerated by both friends and enemies.

February 28:
On the Sunday morning talk shows, Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump refused to condemn endorsements from a prominent white supremacist and former KKK leader, and said he retweeted a Mussolini quote because "it's a very good quote."

February 29: Newspaper clips obtained by VICE suggest the Republican frontrunner's father may have worn the robe and hood of a Klansman in 1927.

... the New York Times asked Donald Trump about the possibility that his father had been arrested at a Klan event. The younger Trump denied it all, telling interviewer Jason Horowitz that "it never happened" four times. When Horowitz asked if his father had lived at 175-24 Devonshire Road—the address listed for the Fred Trump arrested at the 1927 Klan rally—Donald dismissed the claim as "totally false."

Biographical records confirm that the Trump family did live on Wareham Place in Queens in the 1940s, when Donald was a kid. But according to at least one archived newspaper clip, Fred Trump also lived at 175-24 Devonshire Road: A wedding announcement in the January 22, 1936 issue of the Long Island Daily Press, places Fred Trump at that address, and refers to his wife as "Mary MacLeod," which is Donald Trump's mother's maiden name.

... three additional newspaper clips unearthed by VICE contain separate accounts of Fred Trump's arrest at the May 1927 KKK rally in Queens, each of which seems to confirm the Times account of the events that day. While the clips don't confirm whether Fred Trump was actually a member of the Klan, they do suggest that the rally—and the subsequent arrests—did happen, and did involve Donald Trump's father, contrary to the candidate's denials. A fifth article mentions the seven arrestees without giving names, and claims that all of the individuals arrested—presumably including Trump—were wearing Klan attire.

February 29:
For Mitt Romney and the GOP, Trump’s KKK controversy is the last straw.

The hotelier is embroiled in a scandal over whether he is willing to disavow the Ku Klux Klan, whose former grand wizard, David Duke, told supporters recently that a vote against Trump was “treason to your heritage.”

Asked to renounce the white supremacist group on CNN’s State of the Union Sunday, Trump told Jake Tapper, “I don’t know anything about what you’re even talking about with white supremacy or white supremacists.” Appearing on Today this morning, Trump tried to blame his comments on a “lousy earpiece.”

November 1: Donald Trump Gets Coveted Ku Klux Klan Endorsement

While Donald Trump may be suffering from a lack of endorsements—even reviled Republicans such as Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker accidentally gave Hillary the thumbs up—he will be undoubtedly thrilled to learn he has received a glowing endorsement from one of his biggest supporters... the Ku Klux Klan.

Not all Donald Trump supporters are white supremacists, but all white supremacists appear to be Donald Trump supporters. The Ku Klux Klan gave their blessing, officially endorsing Donald Trump on the front page of their latest newspaper edition.

August 15: What Donald Trump didn't say when he talked about white supremacists

Trump's comments came after two days of immense public pressure that he forcefully condemn white supremacists who gathered for a rally at which the counterprotester was killed. He decried racism as "evil" and said that "those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs."

Much of the commentary focused on the timing of the statement and why Trump didn't specifically condemn racist hate groups immediately rather than waiting for several days. Yet the statement also lacked one powerful -- and critical -- component: Trump failed to specifically reject support of the white nationalists, racists and bigots who say they back him.

August 17: Magazine covers link President Trump to KKK over Charlottesville

You probably won't find these magazine covers hanging on walls at President Trump's country clubs.

The Economist
and The New Yorker released their cover illustrations this week, both depicting Trump in conjunction with Ku Klux Klan hoods. The Economist shows the president using a white hood as a megaphone and The New Yorker has him at the helm of a sailboat powered by a sail in the shape of a KKK hood. Trump is seen blowing into it.

The covers result from Trump's controversial remarks about the deadly white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va., last weekend. The subsequent car rampage resulted in the death of a woman, Heather Heyer, and injured 19 others. Trump, in remarks to reporters this week, restated his initial belief that "many sides" engaged in violence.

“Trump retweets video of a crippled white kid in Europe being beaten by migrants, and white people being thrown off a roof and then beaten to death, He's condemned for showing us what the fake news media WON'T. Thank God for Trump! That's why we love him!” Duke wrote on Twitter.

July 20: Charlotte City Council member compared Trump supporters to Ku Klux Klan before RNC announcement

A Democratic member, Larken Egleston, cast the deciding vote in favor of hosting the convention but voiced opposition to President Trump.

“I will not combat the disappointing characteristics of this president by emulating them,” Egleston said. “Hosting the RNC in Charlotte in no way implies our endorsement of this president.”

But another Democrat on the council who voted against bringing the RNC to Charlotte denounced Trump as “dangerous” and compared his supporters to the Ku Klux Klan.
