Kim Jong Yang
(born 30 October 1961) is a South Korean police officer who is the current
President of
Interpol.
Prior to his Interpol career, Kim was Chief of
Gyeonggi Provincial
Police Agency,[1]
the law enforcement agency for South Korea's most populous
province.[2]
As a police chief, Kim took part in efforts to spread South Korean policing
strategies to other nations, including the
Philippines, through financial assistance and training programs.[3]
In 2015 Kim was elected as Interpol's vice-president for Asia.[4][5]
Following the arrest and detainment of Interpol President
Meng
Hongwei in China, Kim took on the role of Acting President.[6]
Although Interpol Vice-President and
Russian interior ministry official
Alexander Prokopchuk had been widely tipped to be Meng's successor, at a
meeting in Dubai on 18–21 November 2018 Kim was elected to serve the remaining
two years of Meng's term.[7][5]
Prokopchuk's candidacy had been opposed by Western nations, which had objected
to the Russian government's abuses of Interpol
red notices to target
dissidents
and political opponents.[2]

November 21: South Korea's Kim Jong Yang was
elected as Interpol's president on Wednesday, edging out a longtime veteran of
Russia's security services who was strongly opposed by the U.S., Britain and
other European nations.
Kim's election was seen as a victory for the White House and its European
partners, who had lobbied against Alexander Prokopchuk's attempts to be named
the next president of the policing organization.
The U.S. and others expressed concern that if Russia's candidate had been
elected, it would lead to
further Kremlin abuses of Interpol's red notice system to go after
political opponents and fugitive dissidents.
Russia accused its critics of running a "campaign to discredit" their candidate,
calling Prokopchuk a respected professional.
