August 26:
Journalist kicked out of Donald Trump news conference

A news anchor was thrown out of a Donald Trump news conference after asking a question about immigration, without being called on first.

Jorge Ramos, who works for the Spanish-language channel Univision, was removed by a security guard from the event in Dubuque, Iowa.

Mr Ramos later returned to the room and was able to ask a question.

June 29: In covering a story, a media outlet is not finding guilt. It is simply reporting the news that [for example] a lawsuit has been filed against Mr. Trump, and ideally putting the complaint in context. Unproven allegations are just that - unproven, and should be identified that way. ...  Proof comes later, at trial. But the November election will come well before any trial. And while Mr. Trump is presumed innocent, we are permitted — no, we are obligated — to analyze [a] case’s viability ....

January 16: Trump Is Making Journalism Great Again

In his own way, Trump has set us free.

Donald Trump and his forthcoming presidency may be the greatest gift to Washington journalism since the invention of the expense account. His unorthodox approach to politics and governance has vaporized the standard, useful, yet boring script for reporting on a new administration’s doings. At his news conference last week, Trump began the process of washing the press completely out of his fake hair as he castigated CNN and BuzzFeed for reporting on the oppo-research dossier compiled on him.

August 23: "We're smart people," the president said to his supporters at the Phoenix Convention Center. "These are truly dishonest people. And not all of them. Not all of them. You have some very good reporters. You have some very fair journalists. But for the most part, honestly, these are really, really dishonest people, and they're bad people. And I really think they don't like our country. I really believe that. And I don't believe they're going to change, and that's why I do this. If they would change, I would never say it."

"These are sick people," Trump said of those in the media. "You know the thing I don't understand? You would think -- you would think they'd want to make our country great again, and I honestly believe they don't. I honestly believe it."

August 28: As Twitter insults go, the one by Rebecca Buckwalter-Poza, a journalist in Washington, was pretty mild. On June 6th, after President Trump tweeted some criticism of the news media, Buckwalter-Poza replied, “To be fair you didn’t win the WH: Russia won it for you.” What happened next, though, was unusual. President Trump, from his @realDonaldTrump Twitter handle, blocked Buckwalter-Poza, meaning that he wouldn’t see any more of her responses and Buckwalter-Poza would no longer see any of the President’s tweets. That made her one of at least a hundred people Trump has blocked, and it led, ultimately, to a hearing in federal district court in Manhattan ...

September 21: There are 55 real African countries but Hollywood, and now Trump, keep making more up

This week US president Donald Trump’s “Nambia” became the 111th made-up African country, according to a list dutifully put together by anonymous Wikipedia contributors. In an address to African leaders on the sides of the United Nations General Assembly on Sept. 21, Trump mispronounced Namibia not once but twice as Nambia. Once when he greeted the country’s leader, another when he praised its healthcare system.

Twitter users pounced quickly:

"Nambia is the world's top exporter of covfefe" ..

November 13: President Donald Trump laughed on Monday as his counterpart in the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, shut down reporters’ questions on human rights and referred to journalists as “spies.”

Dozens of journalists in the Philippines have been killed with impunity in the last decade, and Duterte’s drug war has led to at least 7,000 extrajudicial killings.

Even Duterte himself has been accused of ordering a journalist to be killed. Two former policemen alleged earlier this year that Duterte, while mayor of Davao City in 2003, paid tens of thousands of dollars to have radio broadcaster Juan Pala murdered. Duterte denied the accusations.

December 13: Journalists are being jailed for 'fake news,' and critics blame Trump

A record 262 journalists were jailed in 2017 simply for doing their work, according to a report published Wednesday by the Committee to [Protect] Journalists. That figure is higher even than last year's historic peak of some 259 journalists behind bars.

The nonprofit's annual census found that, of those arrested, an astonishing 21 were arrested on "false news" charges. Others have been jailed for vague "anti-state" charges.

December 13: Trump Attacks Provide Cover for Record Journalist Imprisonments ... Turkey is biggest jailer on "anti-state" charges

For the second consecutive year, a record number of journalists--262--were imprisoned, and President Donald Trump's anti-journalist rhetoric provides cover for the trumped-up accusations and legal charges. That is according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. The figure, as of Dec. 1, was up from 259 in the previous 12-month period.

Turkey (73), China (40) and Egypt (20) led the list of the world's jailers, together accounting for over half of the total, which only includes government custody, not those who have disappeared or were captured by non-state groups. It also does not include those imprisoned and released on a rolling basis throughout the year.

Not surprisingly, since most of the "crimes" were against the state, politics was the most dangerous beat, representing 87% of those jailed. Freelancers accounted for almost a third (29%).

"The international community has done little to isolate repressive countries and U.S. President Donald Trump's nationalistic rhetoric and insistence on labeling critical media 'fake news' serves to reinforce the framework of accusations and legal charges that allow such leaders to preside over the jailing of journalists," CPJ said.

December 26: Plight of Mexican journalist is why Trump should rethink immigration policy

President Donald Trump's get-tough policies toward immigrants living in the U.S. illegally may win points with his supporters, but they are exacting a steep price from those who fled to the U.S. seeking better lives and now face a forced return to the dangers they tried to escape.

One of them is Mexican journalist Emilio Gutiérrez Soto who came over in 2008 and requested asylum but was given a temporary work permit while awaiting a decision. He didn't get an answer until last July, nine years later, when an immigration judge in El Paso denied his request.

Gutiérrez, 54, and his son came to the U.S. to escape death threats from a Mexican general angry about stories he had written for El Diario del Noroeste describing abusive behavior by soldiers in the northern state of Chihuahua. He feared they would kill him and believes they still would if he returns.

June 5: Jake Tapper Brutally Fact Checks Trump’s Lies About The Philadelphia Eagles

“In point of fact, not once during the regular or post-season did any members of the Philadelphia Eagles kneel during the National Anthem,” Tapper said. “Not once!”

Trump also tweeted that “Staying in the Locker Room for the playing of our National Anthem is as disrespectful to our country as kneeling. Sorry!” Again, Tapper set him straight.

“Yeah, that was the Pittsburgh Steelers who stayed in the locker room during the anthem, Mr. President. Not the Philadelphia Eagles,” Tapper said, referring to one of the early games in the 2017 season.

August 19: The unlikely spin doctor to the Philippines’ Trump

Harry Roque used to be a human rights lawyer. Now he speaks for a president who attacks the free press and boasts of shooting people.

For 15 years, Harry Roque worked as a human rights lawyer in the Philippines, building a name for himself and the organization he founded by teaching law in Manila and taking on several high-profile cases. He represented families of the 58 victims, many of them journalists, of the 2009 Maguindanao massacre, which the Committee to Protect Journalists cites as the single deadliest event ever for the profession; he represented Filipina “comfort women” forced into brothels under Japanese occupation during World War II; he went head-to-head with former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s government over its declaration of a state of emergency.

These days, Roque steps up to the podium three times a week as the official spokesman for and most visible public defender of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, a blunt talker who has repeatedly attacked the free press, boasted about personally shooting people when he was a mayor and is best known internationally for leading a brutal extrajudicial drug war. Duterte, whose brazenness sometimes draws comparisons to Donald Trump, is one of a growing crop of authoritarian leaders around the world who reject or downplay human rights in favor of an aggressive, take-no-prisoners form of nationalism

November 7: Trump slams CNN’s Acosta for press conference performance: ‘You are a rude, terrible person’

President Trump clashed dramatically at Wednesday's press conference with CNN White House reporter Jim Acosta, after the CNN star peppered Trump with questions and refused to give up the microphone as he asked about the migrant caravan and Russia investigation.

“That's enough. November 7: Sarah Sanders accused of circulating 'doctored' video of Jim Acosta’s interaction with White House intern

Acosta's press pass to access the White House was suspended "until further notice" Wednesday, hours after he engaged in a contentious back-and-forth with President Trump. A White House intern attempted to retrieve the microphone from Acosta, but the CNN reporter resisted and asked an additional question – and that’s where things get cloudy.

Sanders said the suspension of his press credentials stemmed from his "placing his hands on a young woman just trying to do her job as a White House intern." She called the behavior "absolutely unacceptable."

But many high-profile media members, including The New York Times’ Maggie Haberman and CNN executive Matt Dornic, have accused Sanders of using a doctored video speeding up Acosta’s arm motion, as evidence.

November 7: President Donald Trump on Wednesday denied having ever made racist remarks and accused a reporter who asked about his campaign trail rhetoric of posing a "racist question."

November 16: A federal judge in Washington, D.C., delivered a blow to President Trump Friday, ruling in favor of CNN and the news media.

Judge Timothy Kelly, a Trump appointee, ordered the White House to restore correspondent Jim Acosta's press credentials, something the White House said later it would do.

This is not the end of the road in this fight, however. The judge also said the White House needs to establish standardized rules if it wants to try and justify taking away a pass from a reporter covering the White House. He said he wants to hear from both sides again Tuesday to determine the way forward.

November 21: President Trump’s embrace of Saudi Arabia has exposed a foreign policy rift in the Republican Party, as some of his GOP colleagues warn that not punishing the kingdom for its role in killing a U.S.-based columnist will have dangerous consequences.

Many Republicans – even Sens. Lindsey Graham and Rand Paul, who share their views on the matter with the president – have denounced Trump’s decision not to levy harsher penalties on Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman over the death and dismemberment of Jamal Khashoggi inside the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul.

“It is a delicate situation when we have a long-term ally that we’ve had for decades, but we have a crown prince that I believe ordered the killing of a journalist,” Corker told Chattanooga TV station WTVC in his home state of Tennessee. “We don’t have a smoking gun. Everything points to the fact that he knew about it and directed it.”

November 21: The CIA has a recording of a phone call in which Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is instructing “silence Jamal Khashoggi as soon as possible,” according to a report Thursday in a Turkish newspaper.

The order from the prince was captured by CIA wiretapping, the Hurryiet Daily News reported.

The newspaper said CIA Director Gina Haspell, who traveled to Turkey last month as part of the investigation into Khashoggi’s killing at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2, signaled to Turkish officials that the agency has a recording of the call.

Prince made the comments in a call to his brother, Khaled bin Salman, Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the US, the report said.

November 22: Turkey's foreign minister has criticized President Trump, saying the U.S. leader appears to want to "turn a blind eye" to the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi by Saudi agents at the kingdom's consulate in Istanbul. Mevlut Cavusoglu also described many European nations' response to Khashoggi's killing as "artificial" and "cosmetic."

Cavusoglu was referring to bans imposed by some countries on the Saudi citizens detained in Saudi Arabia over the killing, from entering European nations.

Mr. Trump on Thursday disputed that U.S. intelligence officials had concluded that Saudi crown prince had ordered the killing of Khashoggi - a U.S.-based journalist who was critical of his rule.

Cavusoglu says "Trump's statements amount to him saying 'I'll turn a blind eye no matter what.'"
