Undated:  John DeStefano is an Assistant to President Donald Trump and Counselor to the President. He oversees the Office of Presidential Personnel, Office of Political Affairs, and Office of Public Liaison. DeStefano entered the administration as the Director of Presidential Personnel.[1]

Prior to his current position, DeStefano worked for Ohio Republican Congressman John Boehner. From 2007 to 2011, he was Boehner's political director. From 2011 to 2013, when Boehner was Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, DeStefano served as Boehner's senior advisor. DeStefano also worked with the Republican National Committee building "a 2016 voter file and political database."[2]

DeStefano's appointment as the Trump administration's Director of Presidential Personnel continues to draw criticism from some conservatives. "What? Trump appoints John DeStefano, a longtime aide to former House Speaker John Boehner, as Director of Presidential Personnel for the entire administration!" conservative radio host Mark Levin posted on January 4, 2017.[6][7] Conservative political activist Richard Viguerie's organization ConservativeHQ said DeStefano's appointment was designed "to funnel Capitol Hill staffers loyal to the congressional Republican establishment into key jobs in the executive branch." The organization also pointed out that DeStefano has zero experience in human resource functions, which are at the core of his new role.[8]

On the evening of January 30, 2017, DeStefano wrote the letter to Acting Attorney General Sally Yates informing her that "the president [had] removed [her] from the office of Deputy Attorney General of the United States."

April 19: This Beltway insider is in charge of hiring for the Trump administration. It’s taking a while.

If Johnny DeStefano applied for a job in the Trump administration, chances are pretty good that Johnny DeStefano wouldn’t hire him.

DeStefano is the president’s official headhunter, responsible for filling up to 4,000 political jobs — about 500 of which are really important jobs — in a government that his boss promised to clear of the permanent class of capital insiders to drain the Washington swamp.

So the ideal applicant wouldn’t have spent much of his career on Capitol Hill as DeStefano has, starting with a college internship. Or served as political director for former House speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio), who embodies the GOP establishment. Or raised money for House Republicans, then built a data operation used by the Republican National Committee.

And yet this didn’t stop DeStefano, an amiable 38-year-old who grew up in Kansas City, Mo., from getting an under-the-radar role as someone to see in Trump world.

March 25: Even in Trump's White House, being nice can pay off

Former Boehner aide Johnny DeStefano went from outsider to key West Wing staffer by cultivating friends and allies, rather than knifing enemies.

In the reality competition of “Survivor: White House Edition,” senior aide Johnny DeStefano is coming out ahead.

He’s outlasted President Donald Trump’s first chief of staff, Reince Priebus, and chief strategist Steve Bannon, as well as four White House communications directors, one national security adviser, one director of the National Economic Council and a secretary of state — not to mention roughly 25 of his fellow White House aides.

Amid the recent West Wing exodus, DeStefano — who initially ran the office of presidential personnel — has seen his portfolio grow. He now supervises the office responsible for hiring political appointees at agencies as well as the White House political shop monitoring the midterm elections and the Office of Public Liaison, which is responsible for outreach to outside groups and supporters.

December 13: Trump urged to consider a young White House insider as he struggles to find a new chief of staff

Several people close to the president are promoting Johnny DeStefano, who was a political aide to former House Speaker John A. Boehner before joining the administration as Trump’s director of personnel. He since has seen his portfolio expand and often travels with the president.
