Undated: Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III (born December 24, 1946) is an American politician and lawyer who served as the 84th United States Attorney General from 2017 to 2018. A Republican, Sessions previously served as United States Senator from Alabama from 1997 to 2017, resigning the position in order to serve in the Trump administration.

From 1981 to 1993, he served as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Alabama. Sessions was nominated in 1986 to be a judge of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Alabama, but was not confirmed. Sessions was elected Attorney General of Alabama in 1994, and to the U.S. Senate in 1996, being re-elected in 2002, 2008, and 2014. During his time in Congress, Sessions was considered one of the most conservative members of the U.S. Senate.

Sessions was an early supporter of Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, and was nominated by Trump for the post of U.S. Attorney General.

February 8: Jeff Sessions—whose civil rights history was so troubling that a Republican Senate refused to confirm him as a federal judge in the 1980s—was confirmed today to serve as U.S. Attorney General. “Sessions’ abysmal record of opposition to fundamental civil rights and environmental protections disqualifies him for service as head of our federal department dedicated to justice for everyone in our country,” said Martin Hayden, Vice President of Policy & Legislation.

Jeff Sessions' Advice to Pain Patients: 'Take Some Aspirin' and 'Tough It Out'  ... The attorney general thinks people should suffer needlessly, just like John Kelly.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is a well-known admirer of Nancy Reagan's recommendation that kids "just say no" to drugs. It turns out he applies that advice not only to curious teenagers but also to people suffering from severe pain.

"I am operating on the assumption that this country prescribes too many opioids," Sessions said during a speech at the U.S. Attorney's Office in Tampa yesterday. "I mean, people need to take some aspirin sometimes and tough it out a little. That's what Gen. Kelly—you know, he's a Marine—[he] had surgery on his hands, painful surgery. [He said,] 'I'm not taking any drugs!' It did hurt, though. It did hurt. A lot of people—you can get through these things."

February 12: Sessions invokes 'Anglo American heritage' of sheriff's office ... "I want to thank every sheriff in America. Since our founding, the independently elected sheriff has been the people's protector, who keeps law enforcement close to and accountable to people through the elected process," Sessions said in remarks at the National Sheriffs Association winter meeting, adding, "The office of sheriff is a critical part of the Anglo-American heritage of law enforcement."

"We must never erode this historic office," Sessions continued.

Invoking "Anglo-American heritage" seems to have been an impromptu decision by the attorney general. A written version of the remarks says that Sessions was supposed to say: "The sheriff is a critical part of our legal heritage."

The concept of the office of sheriff -- being an independent, elected law enforcement entity -- originates in Anglo-Saxon England. The word "sheriff" combines the Anglo-Saxon words "shire," meaning "county," and "reeve," meaning "guardian," Cato analyst David Kopel notes in
The Washington Post.

February 12: Jeff Sessions Just Said Slavery Caused the Civil War. That’s an Outrageous White Supre—Oh, Wait, That’s Actually Right

Jeff Sessions, who is named indirectly for Confederate president Jefferson Davis, has some interesting opinions about U.S. history and race. He once implied that monuments to the Confederacy were something all Americans should be proud of; he issued a fond statement about segregationist George Wallace when Wallace died. He’s praised a eugenics-based 1924 immigration law that restricted the entrance of various nonwhite individuals into the U.S. and allegedly once joked affectionately about the KKK. On Monday morning, even, he made a remark about English common law that seemed to suggest sympathy with the ’50s-era “states’ rights” case against the civil rights movement. And other members of the administration Sessions is a part of have, of course, done their part to promote interpretations of history favored by literal white supremacists.

March 1: ‘Mr. Magoo’: Trump’s private nickname for Sessions raises intriguing questions

As The Washington Post reported, President Trump’s relationship with Attorney General Jeff Sessions has reached a new low. Trump has reportedly taken to calling Sessions “Mr. Magoo” at the White House. Coming from a president known for throwing derisive nicknames at enemies and allies, the dig could be a comment on anything from Sessions’s mental prowess to his age to physical appearance. “This effort to basically marginalize and humiliate the attorney general is not going over well with the Senate. I don’t think it’s going over well in the conservative world. If you believe Jeff Sessions should be fired, use the power you have and accept the consequences. I hope it stops,” Graham said, adding, “If Jeff Sessions is fired there will be holy hell to pay.”

March 18: Sources contradict Sessions' testimony he opposed Russia outreach

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ testimony that he opposed a proposal for President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign team to meet with Russians has been contradicted by three people who told Reuters they have spoken about the matter to investigators with Special Counsel Robert Mueller or congressional committees.

The three accounts, which have not been reported, raise new questions about Sessions’ testimony regarding contacts with Russia during the campaign.

Sessions previously failed to disclose to Congress meetings he had with former Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak, and testified in October that he was not aware of any campaign representatives communicating with Russians.

March 19: Is Jeff Sessions in danger of being fired? Relationship with Trump at crossroads

President Donald Trump's aides are watching for two key encounters this week to see if Attorney General Jeff Sessions has finally extricated himself from the danger of being fired, in part by ousting the former No. 2 official at the FBI, according to two people familiar with the situation.

Sessions's standing improved after his Friday night firing of Andrew McCabe, who the president and some Republicans have accused of anti-Trump bias. Top White House officials, including Vice President Mike Pence and Chief of Staff John Kelly, have been protective of Sessions, going out of their way to make Sessions feel appreciated amid frequent criticism from Trump ...

April 2: On Thursday at a Chicago nightclub, Papadopoulos had some drinks and, in a conversation with a new acquaintance, allegedly made new and explosive claims about Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Papadopoulos, according to this new acquaintance, said that Sessions was well aware of the contact between Papadopoulos and Joseph Mifsud, an academic from Malta with high-level connections in Russia. Papadopoulos’ indictment revealed that Mifsud had told Papadopoulos that the Russians had “‘dirt’ on then-candidate Hillary Clinton in the form of ‘thousands of emails.'”

Jason Wilson, a computer engineer who lives in Chicago, told ThinkProgress that Papadopoulos said during their conversation that “Sessions encouraged me” to find out anything he could about the hacked Hillary Clinton emails that Mifsud had mentioned.

June 19: Members of Jeff Sessions' own church filed a formal complaint against the attorney general, accusing him of "child abuse," "immorality," and "racial discrimination" and the “dissemination of doctrines contrary to the established standards of doctrines” of the United Methodist Church.

Last week, Sessions cited the Bible in his defense of the administration's border policy separating children from their parents after they enter the U.S. illegally, which he issued last month.

In the letter, church members took issue with this characterization, criticizing Sessions' "misuse of Romans 13 to indicate the necessity of obedience to secular law, which is in stark contrast to Disciplinary commitments to supporting freedom of conscience and resistance to unjust laws."

August 9: An angry federal judge on Thursday ordered a plane carrying a mother and daughter deported by the Trump administration to turn around and head back to the US because they were plaintiffs in a lawsuit he was hearing over asylum restrictions.

[Judge] Sullivan, who sits on the U.S. court in the District of Columbia, threatened to hold Sessions in contempt of court.

August 27: Jerry Falwell Jr. says Sessions has lost evangelical support

Jerry Falwell Jr., a top conservative religious leader, said Monday he urged President Donald Trump to fire Jeff Sessions over his handling of investigations into Russian election meddling, saying the attorney general has lost evangelicals' support.

“He really is not on the president’s team, never was,” Falwell, the president of Liberty University, said of Sessions. “He’s wanted to be attorney general for many, many years. I have a feeling he took a gamble and supported the president because he knew he would reward loyalty.”

August 30: President Donald Trump attacked his own Justice Department and FBI leadership and implied Hillary Clinton could face criminal charges during a campaign rally Thursday night in Indiana.

"Our Justice Department and our FBI have to start doing their jobs and doing it right and doing it now, because people are angry. People are angry," Trump said at a rally in Evansville, where he was campaigning for Republican Senate nominee Mike Braun.

Trump also suggested he could take a heavier role in the Justice Department -- comments that came hours after he told Bloomberg that Attorney General Jeff Sessions would remain in his job until after November's midterm elections.

September 2: Convicted former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos has publicly contradicted Attorney General Jeff Sessions' sworn testimony to Congress, saying both Sessions and Donald Trump apparently supported his proposal that Trump meet with Vladimir Putin during the 2016 campaign, according to a court filing late Friday night.

"While some in the room rebuffed George's offer, Mr. Trump nodded with approval and deferred to Mr. Sessions who appeared to like the idea and stated that the campaign should look into it. George's giddiness over Mr. Trump's recognition was prominent during the days that followed," Papadopoulos' lawyers wrote in a court filing Friday. Papadopoulos' legal team said that he has shared with special counsel Robert Mueller his recollections of the March 31, 2016, meeting.

November 7: As a senator, Jeff Sessions was one of Donald Trump’s earliest supporters, and he served as one of his campaign’s top foreign-policy advisers. But the seeds of the attorney general’s rift with the president were planted during his confirmation hearing, when he offered up some thoughts about Russia collusion that turned out to be not entirely accurate. Here’s how their relationship devolved to the point that Sessions was asked to submit his resignation a day after the midterms, following months of the two 71-year-old lawmakers barely speaking, except to lob insults on Twitter.
