Undated: Herbert Raymond McMaster (born July 24, 1962) is a retired United States Army officer. In 2017, he became the 26th National Security Advisor, serving under President Donald Trump. He is also known for his roles in the Gulf War, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Born in Philadelphia, McMaster graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1984, and later earned a Ph.D. in American history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His Ph.D. thesis was critical of American strategy and military leadership during the Vietnam War and served as the basis for his book Dereliction of Duty, which is widely read in the United States military. During the Gulf War, McMaster served as a captain in the 2nd Cavalry Regiment, taking part in the Battle of 73 Easting. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H._R._McMaster

May 16: President Trump has called National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster "a pain" and complained that he talks too much in meetings, The New York Times reported Tuesday.

Some senior advisers worry about leaving Trump alone during meetings with foreign leaders, the report said.

McMaster has tried to subtly correct Trump in conversations when he thinks necessary and help keep him on topic — a habit that has annoyed Trump, the Times wrote.

March 1: H.R. McMaster is reportedly becoming increasingly frustrated, and it's fueled speculation he could be on his way out

McMaster griped that Mattis, a former four-star Marine Corps general, treated him "like a three-star" as opposed to an equal in the administration, according to The Post.

Mattis and Tillerson are also believed to have opposed McMaster's idea of a preemptive "bloody nose" strike against North Korea. McMaster was said to be a staunch proponent and has indicated that a limited strike may be needed to "compel" North Korea into denuclearizing. Mattis and Tillerson, on the other hand, are said to have warned the Trump administration of its potential implications and the chance that the conflict could spiral out of control after such a move.

March 23: H.R. McMaster Worked for Me. His Retirement From the Military Reveals A Lot About President Trump

The media accounts of his relationship with the President are largely true. McMaster is a good judge of character and certainly knew what he was getting into when the President tapped him as his second National Security Advisor. When we get an assignment in the military, we call them “orders,” and this was a set of orders he would gladly have passed on. But like a good soldier, he shouldered the pack and stepped into the White House to do what he could to create at least part of a guardrail system around this mercurial and unstable President.
