Undated: George Herbert Walker Bush (June 12, 1924 – November 30, 2018) was an American politician who served as the 41st president of the United States from 1989 to 1993 and the 43rd vice president of the United States from 1981 to 1989. A member of the Republican Party, he held posts that included those of congressman, ambassador, and CIA director. Until his son George W. Bush became the 43rd president in 2001, he was usually known simply as George Bush.

During Trump presidency:

On February 5, 2017, George and Barbara Bush participated in the coin toss for Super Bowl LI.[316]

On August 16, 2017, Bush and his son George W. released a joint statement in which they condemned the violence at the Unite the Right rally.[317]

On September 7, 2017, Bush partnered with former presidents Carter, Clinton, George W. Bush, and Obama to work with One America Appeal to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma in the Gulf Coast and Texas communities.[318]

In July 2015, Bush suffered a severe neck injury. At age 91 in October that year, he was wearing a neck brace in his first public engagement since the accident when he threw the ceremonial first pitch for the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park.[327] Bush wrote a letter to president-elect Donald Trump in January 2017 to inform him that because of his poor health, he would not be able to attend Trump's inauguration on January 20; he gave him his best wishes.

Bush suffered from vascular parkinsonism, a form of Parkinson's disease which had forced him to use a motorized scooter or wheelchair since at least 2012.[345] George H. W. Bush died on November 30, 2018, aged 94,[346] at his home in Houston.[47] Tributes and condolences were offered by former Presidents Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama and incumbent President Donald Trump.[347][348]

January 18: See George H.W. Bush's Apology To Donald Trump For Missing The Inauguration

Trump later tweeted his thanks and good wishes back at the former president.

October 16: President Donald Trump covered a wide range of issues during his press conference on Monday -- including sparking backlash for his comments about President Obama -- but that wasn't the only reference to his predecessors that generated a big reaction.

At one point while discussing past nominations, Trump referred to the former presidents who came before him as, “Bush…Obama…Clinton,” and, “Bush original.”

And the latter sparked quite a response on social media -- especially Twitter.

“Trump calls George H. W. Bush, ‘Original’ Bush, leading me to wonder – Does this make George W. Bush the ‘Extra Crispy’ version?” another asked on Twitter.

July 6: ‘Offensive’ and ‘uncalled for’: George H.W. Bush defenders slam Trump

At a rally in Montana, Trump took aim at Bush’s slogan “thousand points of light,” which he popularized during his presidential campaign. It later became the titular phrase for Bush’s volunteerism organization.

“You know all of the rhetoric you see. ‘Thousands points of light.’ What the hell was that by the way?” Trump said.

“Thousand points of light,” he said. “What does that mean? I know one thing. ‘Make America Great Again’ we understand. Putting America first we understand. Thousand points of light, I never quite got that one. What the hell is that? Has anyone ever figured that one out? It was put out by a Republican, wasn’t it?”

Former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer, who worked for President George W. Bush, called the remarks “so uncalled for.”

“Going after a 94-year-old, former President’s promotion of volunteerism. I don’t mind potus being a fighter. I do mind him being rude,” he wrote on Twitter Thursday night.

December 3: [from Canada] ... At George H.W. Bush’s state funeral, every tribute seems a rebuke to Trump

Excellence, civility, intelligence, modesty: Words used to describe Bush Sr. recall what a U.S. president can be—and what the current one is not

Former U. S. President George Herbert Walker Bush, who kept a battered baseball mitt in the same drawer in the Oval Office in which Donald Trump hides his tax returns, skydived back to Washington for a somber and symbolic funerary week on Monday, 26 years after he was tagged out by Bill Clinton while trying to stretch a single term into a double.

Bush’s casket arrived at the Capitol Monday evening to be attended by military guards, eight of the nine justices of the Supreme Court (all but Ruth Bader Ginsburg), a flock of lame-duck senators and congressmen, and most of Trump’s cabinet (but markedly not the 45th president himself; he’s invited to a formal funeral on Wednesday, where he will be seen and not heard while Brian Mulroney—the former Canadian PM and long-time Bush family friend—delivers a eulogy).

December 3: Trump breaks character in show of respect for George H.W. Bush

A display of humble deference at the passing of an American statesman and war hero is not a gimme with Donald Trump. In August, when Sen. John McCain died, the president was slow and grudging to offer words of respect and order the flags to half-staff for a frequent critic. His absence at the funeral was a relief to the McCain family. When Barbara Bush died, Trump wasn't invited to the funeral.

But the 45th president is hitting the right notes while joining the nation, if not precisely leading it, in mourning the 41st president, George H.W. Bush. By doing so, Trump — whose memory for grudges and slights really does rank among the best — puts aside years of mutual disdain with the Bush family.

December 4: Why George H.W. Bush wanted Trump at his funeral

Despite antipathy between the Bush family and President Donald Trump, the 41st president made clear he wanted America's current leader to be at the funeral, putting the institution of the presidency above personal animosities.

Trump has confirmed he will attend the event, which follows a series of national disasters and tragedies and moments of public mourning that have caused critics to fault his behavior as short of that expected of a president.

To his credit, Trump canceled what was certain to be a contentious news conference at the G20 summit in Argentina on Saturday out of respect for Bush. He also sent one of the iconic blue-and-white 747 jets that serves as Air Force One when a president is aboard to Texas to carry Bush's casket.

December 5: Washington mourns George HW Bush as Trump gives cold shoulder to Clintons

It was a cold day in Washington. When Donald Trump walked in, the temperature plummeted a good deal lower.

In the front pew of the National Cathedral at Wednesday’s state funeral of President George HW Bush, Bill Clinton had been chatting animatedly with Barack and Michelle Obama. Hillary Clinton had been in conversation with Jimmy Carter.

Then came the Trumps. First Lady Melania stood and cordially shook hands with the Obamas and Bill Clinton, and a little wave to Hillary, as her husband took off his coat. Trump plopped down into the end seat before shaking hands with Barack Obama, who nodded formally, and Michelle, who forced a smile and “Good morning”. He did not greet Bill Clinton or his wife, Hillary, who was Trump’s rival in the rancorous 2016 presidential campaign.

It was all in the body language. The Obamas and Clintons now sat staring ahead, visibly tense, their earlier banter quite gone. Barack Obama looked strangely self-conscious; Michelle wore a permanent grimace, Bill and Hillary had stiffened. Trump had deadened the atmosphere like a standing chill.

January 25: From @AnnCoulter: Good news for George Herbert Walker Bush: As of today, he is no longer the biggest wimp ever to serve as President of the United States.

As word got out Friday that President Donald Trump announced a deal that would temporarily reopen the government, right wing provocateur Ann Coulter made it clear she wasn't happy.

But in the process she managed to cast some shade on former President George H.W. Bush.

Twitter users were quick to remind her that Bush, who died Nov. 30, flew 58 combat missions during World War II and received the Distinguished Flying Cross, three Air Medals and the Presidential Unit Citation awarded to the USS San Jacinto, the ship his squadron was based on.

In one mission during World War II, his aircraft took on enemy fire, striking his engine. Bush bailed out over the Pacific and waited four hours before being rescued.

"You can call the man MANY things (and I have), but a wimp isn't one of them," tweeted one user.
